ACL confirms Pearl Jam, then pulls cartoon

(Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam in 2007/Associated Press)
Confirmation by cartoon? We’ll take it. Monday afternoon, the ACL Web site posted a cartoon teaser, under the heading “2009 Lineup” of two pearls in a traffic jam. Other cartoons, hinting at B-52s, John Legend and Sonic Youth were also set to go up. But by Monday evening, the cartoons were scrapped in favor of a message that said to look for the lineup April 28.
Pearl Jam is also scheduled to also do a taping of the fest’s namesake TV show while they’re in town.
But we have to wonder what happened to the cartoon. Did this little bit of fun backfire on C3? Did Pearl Jam object to the blatant “leak”? Did they cancel? Emails have been sent to C3 booker Charles Attal and marketing director Lisa Hickey.
The band’s last appearance in Austin was in 1995 at Southpark Meadows.
Austin Music Source was the first to write that the Seattle rockers were the likely headliner, based on information from a C3 Presents insider. Other names revealed in March were Dave Matthews Band, Kings of Leon and Ghostland Observatory.
Meanwhile, Beastie Boys and Sonic Youth are both doing a tapings of “Austin City Limits” during the fest, so you can go ahead and put them on the list. Charles Attal of C3 would neither confirm nor deny those acts would be playing at Zilker Park Oct. 2- 4.

Now that is gonna be an ACL to remember! I didn’t get a chance to see Foo Fighters (last year?) but I’m definitely not gonna miss this! I suppose this also works pretty well with them promoting their new Ten (Super Deluxe Edition).

Wow. That is almost reason to go. Almost. I was at the show in ‘95 and the one in ‘91 where they opened for Sound Garden at the long lost City Colosseum. I went to the first couple of ACL Fests, but the ticket prices have gotten crazy high. Or maybe I’m just getting too old.

Eddie Vedder has that charismatic and good talent vibe that draws crowds, even 15 years later. He is kinda like Russel Crowe. That must be a dream job: still make money even though they haven’t put out any new material.

Good God, I saw Pearl Jam in 1993 in Nacogdoches, Texas. It seems like they’d get better headliners than Pearl Jame and the B-52s. When is the last time any of these bands put out a record?

I’m sorry, but if Pearl Jam doesn’t have the pearls to play in the Live Music Capital of the world since 1995, they can stay out of Austin.

Pearl Jam, Beatie Boys, Dave Matthews, Sonic Youth, the B-52s? And these are the headliners? Check out the Coachella line up. That festival is filled with some relevant bands.
ACL is turning into a “has beens” fest.
Why not get Blues Traveler, Sound Garden and Alice in Chains while your at it.

LOL Old Dirty *, Alice in Chains! Hilarious. But also sad, didn’t Layne Staley overdose? Hmmm, bummer.
You bring up a good point though about that lineup. I haven’t heard anything new from those bands in about 10 years. I wonder why upper escelon talent escues ACL. Too hot?

Can somebody clue me in here- Is getting Pearl Jam as a headliner supposed to be big news?
Has Pearl Jam done anything relevant in the last 15 years?
And if they cancel- big freakin’ deal. They’ve apparently been afraid of Austin for the last 15 years. I say good riddance.

Gee, at Jazz Fest this weekend I have so many choices -
Friday is easy - Just have to choose at 5 between Joe Cocker, ***** or the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra
Saturday, mmmm, tough one. I’ve got Pete Seeger, Rebirth Brass Band and Astral Project in mid-day, and then James Taylor, Erikah Badu, Wilco and Johnny Winter to choose from at days’ end.
Sunday gets tough at day’s end, too. I can do a half hour of Dave Matthews, then Earth, Wind and Fire, and if that shining star doesn’t light me up there is always the Harlem Blues and Jazz Band.
And there are also plenty of New Orleans musicians playing Jazz Fest…Seems like they still know how to do it right New Orleans. IF you have to feature “has beens”, make them the best has beens that ever were!

first off…Pearl Jam has been putting out music consistantly since you all assume they fell off the earth. Last album was in 2006, its not our fault you listen to terrible tunes.
If you haven’t seen Pearl Jam live you cant even comment. They are one of the best bands around. PERIOD. There are about 3-4 bands out there that would be considered headliners over PJ…Neil Young, U2, Paul McCartney…get over it PJ is going to rock out. They are innovators

I had tickets to their show at Southpark Meadows (R.I.P.) and got food poisoning so bad, I had to give my ticket away. I have been waiting many moons for them to come back. I may have to shell out the bucks for ACL this time.

Phish sucks. Their music is entirely mediocre, their lyrics idiotic, and their fans too stoned to notice or care. Phish isn’t a band for people who really love music- it’s a band for people who just want to do drugs with the cool kids.

I am 30 y.o. (pretty sure I’m in the target audience) and I am very excited about this year’s lineup. Some of the best classics and some new. ACL is designed to make money, not please music snobs. What’s wrong with a little nostalgia? It’s not like Pearl Jam and Beastie Boys are one-hit-wonders.

I used to like Phish. Then I graduated college, traded in my VW van, started using deodorant and got a job.
I used to like Pearl Jam. Then I cut my stringy long hair, gave all my plaid flannel shirts to goodwill and graduated from grunge.
I used to like the Beastie Boys. And I still kind of like their older stuff.

Yeah Gurgle, Trey Anastasio is just a TERRIBLE guitar player. Just awful. Their music is entirely overproduced and they have no live playing talent. How idiotic. This town is trumpeted as the LIVE music capital of the world, right? So go get the best live band playing right now. PHISH!!!! Good gosh, Auto-Tune has ruined the ears of the current music listening youth.

Sonic Youth yes. And we must have Black Angels at maximum volume. Opeth and Carcuss are almost family friendly now and some metal is needed to balance the indie popsters. U2 and pHish absolutely not. But Rush has been touring with a tight show, and would be good for classic rock. Or, Dinosaur Jr.

Re: By Matt PHISH, Band of Horses, and MGMT!!! PLEASE!!! and Thievery :)
Matt you tard, Band of Horses and MGMT played last year. You can’t have the same bands every year, snooze….
I don’t care who they have, Austin brings the best music throughout the year for a lot less money. Unless you go for the headliners, it’s a waste of money. A waste of money I willingly pay to enjoy the scene.
I also ran zilker last week, they are ripping up the site, putting in irrigation, dust masks may not be mandatory this year.

You guys are idiots. Pearl Jam is one of the biggest acts still out there. They just sold out Madison Square Garden twice last year. How many has-beens do that. Just because they haven’t played your little precious indie Austin in awhile doesn’t mean they aren’t relevant. Their 2006 self-titled CD sold better than their previous releases. They are sill a huge draw live and they alone make ACL’s lineup bigger than Lolla and Coachella.

Pearl Jam = Rock = Amazing Live Show
You music snobs are crazy, they are one of the best live bands out there, hands down. Let’s see if Coldplay is still rocking (if you can call it that) in 15 years, I doubt it, that show was a snooze and got so much buzz, because they had a “it” album, big deal.
I caught PJ at Lolla 2 years ago, they played in front of KOL and MMJ and blew away Grant Park, much the way they will at Zilker Park!

To General Haters: I’m furious at the disrespect shown Pearl Jam. They have consistently put out honest, great music and have played incredible shows around the world for years. What exactly do you require from music/musicians? I can only assume you don’t know what you’re saying, and probably never do, but still end up talking all the time.
