KUT’s Willie doc wins national awards

Congrats to David Brown and the “Texas Music Matters” crew for winning National Headliners awards for best documentary and radio grand prize for “Amazing Grace: the Story of Willie Nelson,” which aired last April in conjunction with Nelson’s 75th birthday. The prestigious awards were announced today.

The hourlong documentary, which was nearly a year in the making, was anchored and produced by Brown, with assistance from independent journalist Michael May. You can listen to it here. Brown and crew interviewed sister Bobbie Nelson, the person who knows Willie best, as well as dozens of Willie cronies, including Kris Kristofferson, Ray Price and Farm Aid co-founder John Mellencamp.

“Amazing Grace” beat out entries from ABC, CBS, NBC and scores of national producers across the nation. The grand prize carries a $1,500 award.
