SXSW scene report: gifting suites and more
The Carrera sunglasses company of New Jersey has taken over the patio at Moonshine, renaming it the Carrera Cafe. There SXSW artists can pick up some free $150 sunglasses, Toms shoes and gift bags. There’s also free food from Moonshine.
This is not the sort of place where you expect the kindness of strangers, but a gentleman from Wales named Colin Consterdine invited me to sit at his table on the crowded patio. Colin, a label manager for Sound of Monkey, had spent Wednesday evening assisting BBC radio correspondent Huw Stephens, who’s been doing an interesting radio show at SXSW. Stephens keys one one act, recording some of their performance then interviewing them. Then that act recommends the next subject.
Wednesday started with Scottish group Dananakroyd at Latitude 30, who recommended Baltimore rap duo Ray Ray. Then it was off to see Brooklyn’s Shilpa Ray, who Colin compares to early P.J. Harvey (“she’s gonna be huge”) at Club Deville. The night ended at Deville for Phosphorescent, the Willie Nelson tribute band getting massive raves for the new “To Willie” album. “It was like seeing the Grateful Dead in 1970,” said Consterdine.
Tonight Stephens will key on Chairlift, who play at 11 p.m. at Red 7. Other tips from Consterdine are ukulele-playing Dent May (“the hottest thing in the UK right now”), the Uglysuit and Norwegian progsters Ungdomskulen.
