Metallica confirmed at SXSW: Austin Chronicle
Austin Powell of the Austin Chronicle says he’s received confirmation from the Metallica camp that the metal superstars will indeed be playing Stubb’s on Friday March 20 at 10 p.m. as part of the “Guitar Hero: Metallica” showcase. The Chronicle founded SXSW in 1987.
Roland Swenson of SXSW was not too happy with Thursday’s “Off the Record” scoop, however. “He didn’t get it from us,” Swenson said. “We were told not to confirm anything and we’re sticking by that.”
OK, so hypothetically, let’s say everyone believes that stadium headliner Metallica is going to play Stubb’s, a venue that holds only 2,100. Is there going to be any way the average fan can get in? Swenson said it will be standard SX policy, with badges and wristbands getting priority. There will also be a line for those willing to pay cover, but admission will be based on space availability.
It promises to be pure insanity. But here’s the good news: Stubb’s is an outdoor venue. Fans will be able to hear the band all the way to Hyde Park.
Powell said he got the confirmation two days ago and notified SXSW organizers that he planned to print it, but never heard back from them.

must be nice for those who can afford to buy the wristband/badges who get to see this show, who probably aren’t real Metallica fans, but go so they can brag to their friends that they saw them, then probably say the show sucked

Yes, Keith, no one who can afford $125 for a weeklong pass to a kickass festival could POSSIBLY be a “real” Metallica fan. Touche.
I’ll remember this when I’m screaming my lungs out to Master of Puppets that I have no right to be there.
(Of course I’m assuming I don’t get shut out by badge people. I bet they’re not even real fans!!! :)

i wonder who the brain surgeon was that decided for them to use that venue….. i too saw them the last time they were in austin, back in 89 at the erwin center, and there were too many people there. i cannot imagine the havoc that will be wreaked there when they show up.

For those of you that have yet to allow the Metal from the new album pour into your soul, go get it now… it’s my favorite album since ‘And Justice For All’, this album shreds! For the Metallica purists, the new album redeems! At 42 yrs of age, hell yeah, I’ll be the there fighting the young crowds to show ‘em how to Kill ‘em All!!! What a great show that shall be!
Last one in the mosh pit listens to Poison instead!!!

I dunno why people are surprised about them playing a small venue. They have in recent years even played surprise shows at the local scene in SF.

You people are idiots if you even think for a minute that Metallica will be playing at Stubb’s for SXSW… Metallica isn’t showing up, it’s going to be a Guitar Hero contest. Metallica is being featured on the new Guitar Hero game… This is just a promotional event.
Save yourselves some time and go see a “confirmed” band on the official SXSW lineup.
