Blaze, Fud, Elmer and more headed for Austin Music Memorial
Singer-somgwriter Blaze Foley, who was shot to death on West Mary Street in 1989, legendary gospel announcer Elmer Akins, accordion great Camilo Cantu and jazz/pop singer Damita Jo De Blanc are among the second group of 10 deceased Austin musicians set to be inducted into the Austin Music Memorial, pending approval of the Austin City Council Thursday.
Consisting of 18-inch engraved plaques on the second floor concourse of the Long Center for the Performing Arts, the memorial will also welcome blues pioneer T. D. Bell, 1960s corrido singer Longino “Lonnie” Guerrero, country bluesman Bill Neely, former Thelonious Monk bassist Gene Ramey, boogie woogie piano player Robert “Fud” Shaw and Stubb’s founder C. B. Stubblefield.
There should be no dissenters on the council for this solid list.
Damita Jo is only the second female included in the first 20 inductees, which were nominated by the public and whittled down by a panel of local music aficionados. The city will pay the estimated $900 per memorial. To be eligible, honorees must have been dead at least three years.
