Happy Birthday Willie! (day one)
The Houston Chronicle and Fort Worth Star-Telegram are celebrating Willie Nelson’s 75th birthday today, but we’re marking the occasion tomorrow, April 30. What gives?
Willie’s birth certificate puts the DOB at April 30, which is what Doc Simms, who delivered Willie in Abbott, wrote down. But according to Joe Nick Patoski’s book “Willie Nelson: An Epic Life,” a cousin who was there at the birth and named Willie Hugh Nelson, claimed the singer was actually born a few minutes before midnight. Ask Willie Nelson when his birthday is and he’ll say it’s today. Can’t help but wonder if 4/29/33 is a better numerological fit for the zen cowboy. After all, four plus 29 is 33.
We’re sticking with the public record over Cousin Mildred’s recollection. April 30 is also the birthdate given on Willie Nelson’s plaque in the Country Music Hall of Fame. But celebrate today if you want to. If anyone deserves two birthdays….

Howdy? I first moved to Austin in 1971. I loved living here and especially the music. But,…in 1991 I got married and my husband got a job in California. I pined for Austin SO much: Willie Nelson, the country music, the good old days, etc… a few years ago I adopted a kitten from the pound in California and I named him in honor of one of my all time favorite musicians, “Willie.” What name could be more in honor of Texas than ” Willie”? He is one of the best and greatest symbols of the lone star state. We finally moved back to Austin recently, driving with Willie the kitty in our pick up truck for four days. He cried alot along the way until we pulled up in Austin. We are all three now back home and happy to be here. Willie loves it here and we love him? BOTH Willies! We all three wish you a happy birthday!

I’m finally reading this in September of 2009. My cousin, Joe Moses, passed away only a few weeks ago. I’VE NEVER DONE A SEARCH FOR MY NAME UNTIL TODAY. Then, only a FEW WEEKS after he died, I come across my cousin’s name and a question he asked about me, on the internet. This is UNBELIEVABLE!!!! We have never e-mailed each other either. What a coincidence, very heart warming, that I stumbled onto this site, a site that tells me that my cousin Joe has asked about me. I haven’t seen him in many years. Now he is gone, he dies only a few weeks ago. Growing up, I always thought he was SOOOOOO cool, and cute, plus he was one of the most popular kids in Myrtle Beach , South Carolina. I always looked way up to him. So now I see his name and letter on the internet asking me to get in touch, only a few weeks after he died. Coincidences like this are so cool, so wonderful, I’ll never forget it. This is the very last contact that Joe ever had with me before he died. danamardaga@austin.rr.com
