The Do-It Yourself ‘Glow in the Dark Tour’ playlist
Newbies (and easily confused parents) should get familiar with these 10 songs before Wednesday’s Glow in the Dark Tour stop in Austin.
- ‘Through the Wire,’ Kanye West: Don’t expect to hear it live, but this is where the Kanye-as-MC story starts, with West rapping this singular track through a broken jaw sustained in a car accident. ‘Thank God for the safe belt,’ indeed.
- ‘Pon Da Replay,’ Rihanna: This one you might hear, the dancehall-tinged breakout that told Mr. DJ to turn the music up.
- ‘Lapdance,’N.E.R.D.: The song assures us that we ‘can get this lapdance here for free.’ I don’t think this will happen at the show, but, hey, anything’s possible.
- ‘Kick, Push,’ Lupe Fiasco: FromWest’s protégé, one of the best odes to skateboarding ever written (‘They head to any place with stairs/ Any good grinds/ The world was theirs’).
- ‘Jesus Walks,’ Kanye West: The breakout. A stomping, martial drumbeat underpins this profession of faith. Given Sen. John McCain’s questionable standing among social conservatives, it would make a good campaign song.
- ‘Touch the Sky,’ Kanye West feat. Lupe Fiasco: Look for this as the likely set closer, it being a spiritual duet with Fiasco and all.
- ‘Umbrella,’ Rihanna: This was the national anthem for a few months last year, a Top 40 pop hit shaped like a rock song that sounded like ultramodern R&B that even toddlers could sing along to.
- ‘Golddigger,’ Kanye West: Jamie Foxx guests as Ray Charles and our hero shouts out the ladies who just love him for his wallet. As funny as West gets.
- ‘Stronger,’ Kanye West: K gets his Daft Punk on with an electronic juggernaut that touches on this tour’s apparent theme: ‘Harder, better, faster, stronger.’
- ‘Hip-Hop Saved My Life,’ Lupe Fiasco (above): The latest single from Fiasco’s 2007 album ‘The Cool,’ the sentiment applies to a lot of folks who will be at this show.
Sound off: What are we missing? Are there other songs by ‘Glow in the Dark Tour’ artists Kanye, Rihanna, Lupe Fiasco and N.E.R.D. that should be on this list? (Like the brilliant Lupe Fiasco joint “Superstar,” for example, writes Deborah Sengupta Stith.) Post your suggestions in the comments below.
