Roddy Howard 1947- 2008

The Austin music scene has lost another longtime supporter. Roddy Howard, who co-owned the One Knite at 801 Red River Street in the ’70s and the Continental Club for a few years after that, was found in his apartment Saturday, dead of an apparent heart attack. He was 60.

“I used to listen to him talk for hours about the Austin music scene,” said booking agent David Cotton. “I wish I had taken notes. Roddy Howard’s generosity, sense of fair play, and his treatment of musicians made him special.”

Although he was sentenced to 57 months in prison after a 1995 arrest for cocaine possession with intent to distribute, Howard was sober the last eight years of his life and helped counsel others having a rough time with drugs and alcohol.

A memorial service will be Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Cook Walden Funeral Home at 6100 N. Lamar Blvd., followed by an informal gathering at the Continental hosted by former co-owner Wayne Nagel.

From 1970, when Howard and two friends bought the club for just under $2,000,until it closed on July 4, 1976, the One Knite was known for its hanging junkyard decor and its illegal after-hours parties that often raged until dawn. Stevie Ray Vaughan played there for free every Monday night.

Nagel says the Continental Club wake Wednesday will also memorialize many other essential behind-the-scenesters who are no longer with us, including Steve “Bondo” Bond, Cheryl Newlin, Big Al Ragal and Dale Wilkins.

Actually, it was Jimmy’s band,Storm, that played every Monday night for over 4 years straight. No pun intended.

Very sad to hear the news. Actually also the news of Steve Bond. I have been trying to locate him after we lost touch a few years back. I have great memories and would appreciate any information on his passing. God Bless to all the friends and family.
