Austin Acoustic Series ends
Beleaguered promoter Sally Cooper has decided to discontinue her Austin Acoustic Series on May 1. She made this announcement on her Web site Monday. Cooper was sued in March by a booking agent on behalf of the Roches, who claim they are owed $7,300 for a Dec. 1 performance.

CMT country music awards give Taylor Swift a bunch of stuff, boo Snoop, make fun of Billy Ray Cyrus
Last night’s CMT Music Awards—think the MTV Video Music Awards for, well, country — reminded viewers that the country music industry is nothing if not professional, at least on the outside. It wrapped up on time, yet still felt casual and just folks.
One was also reminded that country music is one of the most important musics, if not the most important, in America: Sen. McCain, Sen. Obama and Sen. Clinton all made appearances in a skit about Trace Adkins trying to score tickets for his kids, what with Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus hosting and all.
A few notes from watching it last night:
Seeing Miley and Billy Ray Cyrus joke about Miley paying all the bills these days, it occurs to one that we seem to have come a very long way indeed from Bill Hicks’ old joke about a game show called “Let’s Hunt and Kill Billy Ray Cyrus.” She even makes a joke about paying his phone bill, which comes off as more than a little creepy.
LeAnn Rimes is an industry vet at 25; her first hit was 12 years ago. Based on the recreation of her “Chicago”-themed video for “Nothing Better to Do,” I await her techno-pop album and collaboration with, say, Rihanna.
Kellie Pickler, who ended up nabbing three awards, seemed genuinely unsure what to say and even said, “You can take the camera off of me now.” Hard to imagine anyone on the MTV Video Music Awards asking for the camera to be taken off them. Ever. No wonder country fans love their stars so much.
Sugarland, Little Big Town and Jake Owen ran through their cover of Dream Academy’s “Life in a Northern Town.” I think I’m the last person in the world who didn’t know that song was about Nick Drake. I wonder if they’re big Nick Drake fans. A Little Big Town album of Nick Drake covers could sound amazing.
Tim McGraw and Faith Hill are dueting. Tim looks fine, Faith has mom hair and looks a little swollen in the face. Has she been ill?
Tim Daly introduced the female video of the year, which was a bunch of really young women and poor Martina McBride, who looked as if she knew just how screwed she was. Taylor Swift won it.
Jason Aldean and Snoop Dogg introduce Alan Jackson, who is looking these days like a grandfather. Man, I’m old. Everyone seems to be booing Snoop, which, given the historical baggage country music has to tote around, is pretty unfortunate.
“Till We Ain’t Strangers Anymore,” by Bon Jovi featuring LeAnn Rimes, picked up the Collaborative video award. Based on the length of Rimes’ dress, nobody in the front row is a stranger anymore.
Here’s the complete list of winners:
Video of the year: Taylor Swift, “Our Song.”
Female video: Taylor Swift, “Our Song.”
Male video: Trace Adkins, “I Got My Game On.”
Group video: Rascal Flatts, “Take Me There.”
Duo video: Sugarland, “Stay.”
Breakthrough video: Kellie Pickler, “I Wonder.”
Collaborative video: Bon Jovi featuring LeAnn Rimes, “Till We Ain’t Strangers Anymore.”
Performance of the year: Kellie Pickler, “I Wonder” from 41st Annual CMA Awards.
Supporting character of the year: Rodney Carrington from Trace Adkins’ “I Got My Game On.”
Wide Open Country video: Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, “Gone, Gone, Gone (Done Moved On).”
Tearjerker video: Kellie Pickler, “I Wonder.”
Comedy video: Brad Paisley, “Online.”
Video director: Michael Salomon for Toby Keith’s “High Maintenance Woman” and Trace Adkins’ “I Got My Game On.”

Ely, Escovedo jam with the Boss
Bruce Springsteen’s Houston concert Monday had an Austin flavor at the end when Alejandro Escovedo and then Joe Ely performed with the E-Street Band during the encores.
Ely is a regular at Springsteen shows, but this is the first time Escovedo has jammed with the Boss. It makes perfect sense, however, because Escovedo is now managed by Jon Landau and Barbara Carr who have handled Springsteen since “Born To Run.” Now that they’re, basically, in the same family, Springsteen needs to learn how to pronounce “Escovedo.”
The song the Boss performed with the Assistant Night Manager is “Always a Friend” from the upcoming Escovedo rock album “Real Animal.” Escovedo’s at the Back To Earth Lounge (aka Continental Club) tonight at 10 p.m.

More rock, less Dylan for this year’s Zilker Park music orgy

- Photos: 2008 ACL Fest lineup
- Sound off: What do you think of this year’s lineup?
- The M.O.: What to look for at this year’s fest
- Full 2008 lineup
Let the blogging commence.
The 141-act Austin City Limits Music Festival lineup was released today, about three weeks earlier than last year. (The festival, however, is later in September — Sept. 26-28 — than last year.)
Instead of a somnolent, controversial set from last year’s closer Bob Dylan, high-octane alt-rock veterans Foo Fighters are likely to headline the coveted last slot on Sunday.
KGSR fans will look forward to singing along with the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss duo, as well as John Fogerty and Beck.

None of these acts has played ACL Fest before.
Along with Manu Chao, David Byrne, the Mars Volta and Gnarls Barkley, all the above plan to throw down at the seventh annual festival, which is scheduled to once again occupy Zilker Park for three days.
“Every year we try to keep it as eclectic as possible and true to what the TV show is all about,” ACL Fest producer Charles Attal said.
This means a titrated mix of big names (see above), Austin favorites (Drive-By Truckers, G. Love and Special Sauce), Austin-based acts (Patty Griffin, Alejandro Escovedo, White Denim, Asleep at the Wheel, the last of whom have played all seven ACL fests), hipster buzz acts (Vampire Weekend, Duffy, Man Man) and vets with new albums out (Spiritualized, Beck). Yes, the recently released 10th anniversary version of Beck’s “Odelay” means he fits into this last category. You are that old.
Fans shouldn’t expect too much high-wattage crossover with Lollapalooza, which Attal’s company C3 Presents also books. Radiohead, Rage Against the Machine, Nine Inch Nails and Kanye West are all slated to play the storied fest, which takes place Aug. 1-3 in Chicago’s Grant Park.
“They’re two totally different shows, and I’m pleased with how they separated themselves this year,” Attal said, referring to the routing issues that often dictate festival stops for bands. “Lollapalooza was born out of more of an alternative rock show. We try to stay true to that and to the spirit of the ACL show at Zilker.”
That said, the two have a fair amount of crossover about midlist. The Raconteurs are the biggest band playing both, but fans can also see sets at Zilker and Grant from such midlisters as Gnarls Barkley, blues mutants the Black Keys, G. Love, soul survivors Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings and Austin darlings Okkervil River, among others. (Austin faves Wilco are playing Lollapalooza but not ACL.)
Then again, “the spirit of the TV show” means ACL Fest is traditionally packed with the sort of bands that could credibly walk over from the main stage to knock out a set on the TV show. Attal says some ACL Fest acts will tape episodes of the show, but plans have not yet been finalized.
Attal would not say how the day-by-day schedule will look but did offer hints here and there. David Byrne will likely draw on Talking Heads material for much of his set. The Mars Volta, famous for sets the lengths of HBO mini-series, will close out a stage one night, which will allow them to stretch out.

The hip-hop and R&B quotient feels a little more high-wattage this year. The aforementioned Gnarls Barkley just released a new album, and the new joint from R&B oddball (and Dallas native) Erykah Badu is garnering great notices. Other hip-hop acts include Austin rap titan Bavu Blakes and West Coast rap lifer Del the Funky Homosapien.
Attal also declined to say which bands would play the coveted ACL aftershows at Stubb’s and elsewhere, gigs that have become as much a part of the festival experience as the Zilker show itself and bolstered the ACL Fest’s status as an autumnal version of SXSW.
