So what % of bands from the fake poster are on here? Since all I heard for the last two months was how the flier was called a fake but that it was real. I didn’t buy it, and now I see at least a few big differences. Anyone know the actual % of bands that were on the fake that made it?

If you’ve never seen David Byrne live then I suggest checking that show out. Might be top 5 shows I’ve ever seen live when he played Austin like 5 yrs ago on UT.

Quite a let down compared to other summer festival lineups. Texas-based C3 went all out for Lollapalooza, but dropped the ball for the festival in its own backyard.

The ACL organizers can comment all they want about the spirit of the television program. They poured everything popular into Lolla this year most likely due to marketing. ACL has too solid a following in Austin. Music fans like me often buy a 3 day pass before knowing the lineup. I assume the organizers don’t have the same promise of income with Lolla so they steered the big talent to Chicago.

Meanwhile I’m left with maybe 5 groups that I actually want to see. 5 performances out of over one hundred bands. 5 performances for $150. I’ll debate whether I want to splurge on the luxury of ACL tickets next year while food and gas prices spike. I think the community should demand the lineup be posted prior to any ticket sales from now on.

The last two year have been a disappointment. The Foo Fighters? Not even close to 2006 when we had Van Morrison and Tom Petty.

At least Joe Bonamassa is playing. Best guitar I’ve even seen.

To all the people upset, please list who you would have liked to see. It seems every year people complain, but the artists seem to be a good mix of up-and-coming, local, and old favorites. I personally like this years lineup and think I will go for the first time in a few years. The last few have had too many repeats or I recently saw them elsewhere. Beck, Spiritualized, Iron and Wine, Neko Case, and Jenny Lewis are exciting as I have never seen them. And seeing local favs like Robert Earl Keen, Alejandro Escoveda, South Austin Jug Band, etc. are always fun too. I wish Radiohead would do this, as they are one of the few bands I haven’t seen.

Great lineup, unfortunately its Foo Fighters as the headliner. Don’t get me wrong, they are going to be awesome, its just all the people like Tessa and the rest of the radio only fans that will be flooding the park. This is an awesome lineup, especially for $60 a day. Too many great bands on the list to mention.

I too am disappointed in the bands this year… nothing for a Muse fan to go check out (I’d really accept a band that sounded like them at all, as hard as that is). Foo Fighters, Beck, What Made Milwaukee Famous, and MGMT are the only bands I’m even remotely interested in, but not worth spending 340 bucks on. I really am disappointed =(

The only thing it separates is a first rate lineup from a second tier lineup.

Sorry to see that Neil Young isn’t playing as rumored. And wasn’t R.E.M. supposed to be returning to Austin for ACL? Overall, though, a really strong lineup full of lots of bands that deserve more exposure! I’m coming from upstate New York and can’t wait!!

Awesome. If folks can’t find any joy out of this incredible line-up, I happily invite them to stay home and free up some space in Zilker. As much as I love Wilco, Ben Harper and the usual gang of suspects, I’m stoked to see so many new bands this year.

By Michael Corcoran

April 15, 2008 9:32 AM | Link to this

It’s been said that the Austin City Limits Music Festival will sell out no matter who Charles Attal books. This year we’ll know for sure if that’s true because this looks to be the weakest lineup since, well White Stripes and Amy Winehouse canceled last year and Bob Dylan didn’t. staff

You know this year’s lineup is lacking because David Byrne, the Raconteurs, Gnarls Barkley and Mars Volta are all top tier. There’s not enough collective heat there to toast a muffin. Are we sure C3 Presents didn’t decide to cut costs by glomming onto a Carlos N’ Charlies booking?

What looks good on the schedule? Well, Sunday’s headliners the Foo Fighters for one. They haven’t played Austin in awhile and they’ve got a ton of good songs. Don’t know if anyone’s going to shell out $170 just to see them.

Acts I’m most looking forward to seeing: John Fogerty, who should murder in this setting, Erykah Badu, who could be very hot by September 26-28., Beck, my girls Neko Case and Duffy, Vampire Weekend, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Jones Family Singers, of course. Manu Chao is supposed to be fantastic live.

I was e-mail a professional looking line-up on Friday that had most of the bands from today’s line-up plus a few others. I had been tell my friend how great ACL was going to be and then it turns out most of the bands I wanted to see got scraped from the list and we where are stuck with the scraps. I am sad to say I am very disappointed with the years official line-up.

Wow, after looking at the headliners for Lollapalooza and All Points West Festival, and after a hideous performance to close last years festival I was really expecting the ACL folks to step it up this year and have something huge. No offense to Beck, Plant, Patty G and FF but this lineup is HORRIBLE for a festival of this magnitude. I am really glad I did not purchase early tickets. Well, Chicago and Lollapalooza here I come!!!! I will skip the event this year in Austin for the first time in 5 years. I would guess the same person that chose Dylan to close last years show was the same person that arranged this year’s lineup. Time for a new career.

wonderful!, i too love the SPIN reasoning for crap headliners compared to lolla - easy there CHENEY!

though the line-up is quite underwhelming,(like it seems every year for me - way too kgsr) all the musical bases look covered and it should make for a good, typically unpretentious austin vibe.

really upset there’s no REM, but thanks a ton for david byrne.

Foo Fighter’s, are they kidding? Plant and Krause? Where is Radiohead, PJ, Coldplay, Keane, Death Cab for Cuties, Cold War Kids, The National, SOMEONE!!! Where is any decent headline act here? ACL gave Bob “He Sucks” Dylan, last year…thank god for Muse, Arcade Fire and others, who saved the day. ACL is now at the LOW END of ALL festivals in terms of linups. Oh, and please don’t retort with the “So don’t go”…ACL needs to step up and meet or beat the competition and right now, Bonaroo, Coachilla, and even the SF festival are kicking its butt.

By Loretta

Frankly, I am pleased with the lineup. The recent past has been an explosion of drunk, rude college-aged kids who disrespect the music and the fans. Bring on a smaller, more intelligent crowd, with infinitely more interesting music that will stand the test of time.

Nice to see a return to a predominately American lineup. No complaints here. If there’s a hole in the schedule that needs to be filled, I hope they consider The Steps. They really rocked last year.

By Andrew

April 15, 2008 12:33 PM | Link to this

Only someone with the poorest of musical taste would think Bob Dylan sucks, but hey, you like Keane so…

Anyway, I agree this is the most baffling festival lineup I’ve ever seen. It’s like they didn’t even try to get a major act. Foo Fighters? I thought it was a joke. I’m sorry, but billing big names like Plant and Fogerty is not enough. Neither of these guys are what they used to be.

Thank God I hadn’t bought my tickets yet. And now I know never to buy in advance until seeing the lineup in the future.

But I’m still holding out hope that maybe next year Hanson will be the headliner!!! C’mon ACL, you can do it!

By kat

April 15, 2008 12:38 PM | Link to this

Seems to me this town has a lot of musical snobbery and closed minds to new music-you can’t tell me that all who are complaining have heard or seen all the bands listed-silly me, I thought the whole point of ACL was to get a chance to see/hear something new and maybe even (gasp!) find another local band you never knew about?? What a concept!

By cbell

April 15, 2008 12:46 PM | Link to this

By Gabalicious

April 15, 2008 12:53 PM | Link to this

Seriously I don’t know what people are complaining about. While I agree that Foofighters are not what i would call major headliners, there are ALOT of awesome bands and singers this year. If you want more mainstreamy bands then I truly think you don’t understand what ACL is all about. It’s worth the ticket price for me just because of Manu Chao,Gillian Welch,M.Ward(who knows maybe he’ll bring zooey deschanel with him),sharon Jones and the dap kings,MGMT,Hot Chip, The Black Keys,Erykah Badu,Gogol Bordello,Patty Griffin,David Byrne and so many more. I for one am GLAD that so many people are complaining and won’t buy tickets this year. This means that I may possibly be able to listen to the music and kick back and enjoy the awesome eclectic mix of entertainers without having to put up with all the teeny bopper overly tanned college kiddies who are there to see Coldplay or Keane and the like. This is REAL music NOT the right side of the radio. I’ve been every year so far and have NEVER been disappointed. In fact I discover new bands every year! try it out for yourself you silly naysayers.

Mike Farris turned a lot of heads at SXSW - particularly Antone’s & Stubbs as well as the KGSR live broadcast from the Four Seasons. Glad to see he is coming back for ACL! While he may not be as familiar a name to some of the posters here, those that remember the days of the Screamin Cheetah Willies or saw him at SXSW will welcome him back to Austin with open arms.

I can’t wait to be there to watch the next big thing. I think it is a good line-up. I saw Duffy at SXSW and she is the best singer I have heard since Janis Joplin as far as technique and feeling. Good strong songs, too, and top notch band behind her. I will be seeing Plant/Krauss at Jazz Fest in two weeks, and I am excited about them, too. If they are half as good as their recent CMT TV show, it will be amazing. What a band with T-Bone and Buddy Miller. I like John Fogerty, but also new groups like the Dap Kings and Paperboy Reed doing their Sweet Soul Music! I will also be at Back Door Slam, Black Keys, Roky Erickson, Beck and especially the experimental Hot Chip. Looking forward to others, too. Not wild about Foo Fighters, though! They should be out fighting foo.

I feel cheated. I truly do. This is the worst lineup I could EVER imagine. The FOO Fighters suck. They don’t deserve to be the headliner. How about The Who, Van Halen, or any other decent band. If your going to bring in Robert Plant you might as well bring in Jimmy Page and the rest of Led Zepplin.

As a poster on Austinist said, all the complainers who don’t know who most of these bands are, will be raving about them next year and complaining that they aren’t playing ACL. As I said, people need to get away from radio, the billboard top 10 and pithcfork and expand your musical boundries. Being a sheep and complaining that C3 didn’t spend $1M plus on getting PJ or Radiohead to play is weak - they could get them, but are y’all willing to pay the $250+ ticket charge that would accompany it?

Hilarious part of all this are the people who actually believed that fake poster and then got angry when those people weren’t on the REAL lineup. Guys, if it’s fake, that means—get ready for this—it’s fake. Don’t hold ACL to the standards of a fake poster.

As for the lineup, I am slightly disappointed, mainly because I wanted to see Ghostland and would kill to see Bright Eyes live. But, overall, it’ll be great to see some new bands and open my ears to some up and comings and some lesser knowns. I suggest everyone do the same.

Side note: sell your ticket if you don’t like the lineup. It’s as simple as that. I’m sorry if you’re disappointed, but maybe if you were scared you would be you shouldn’t have bet all your money pre-flop.

To the people complaining about Ghostland Observatory not being on the bill this year- did you miss that MGMT is playing? I’m not sure there’s room at ACL for two electro-retro duos that are known for their wild live shows.

I think it’s a solid lineup. Not quite as cool as last year’s to me, but since I just moved down here a couple years ago, I haven’t been going to the show since it started.

I just…i really don’t get you people. I would think Austin people would have better musical taste. It’s a great eclectic lineup this year and I CANNOT wait until SEPTEMBER. Maybe this year will feel more like the first two years! Room to stretch my feet, spark it up and drink a beer. I certainly don’t think the people complaining are musical snobs, because anyone with a refined taste in music would realize this is a great lineup. Those also complaining that Coachella is better this year should realize that besides PRINCE(whom they added at the last minute because of lack of interest)the lineup is mediocre if that. If any one wants to sell their tickets for less than 170 please email me at gabilondis_pondis@yahoo.com. MANU CHAO, MANU CHAO, MANU CHAO,CHAO,CHAO!!!

Who cares who’s on at this festival? Austin is a two-cent town with pretensions to being a real city. Austin lucky to get someone like Foo Fighters, let alone Rush in ten days.

Let’s face it, you’re not the live music capital of Texas, let alone the world…

When I woke up today, giddy as a kid on Christmas, I rushed to the computer and pulled up the lineup. Wow. Not sure how exactly I felt. I think that I ended up getting my expectations up over a band like Radiohead or PJ, and as I scanned the list I still felt that gap at the top. But wait! Once I went to the Lollapalooza and Coachella sites I realized the true beauty of ACL. Frankly, the lineup is deep. Listening to you people made me go over it again and again, and I’m not sure if I’ve gone and convinced myself that this is better than I first thought, but I’d rather have a deep, eclectic lineup like this. Instead of paying lots of money for 3 or 4 big names that I have to watch from the distance, I get to catch awesome acts up close in my own backyard (oh-and a random Jakob Dylan appearance- hopefully better than his dad last year {and I love Bob}) My 2cents, it’ll be a party anyway you look at it!

The ACL committee needs to be fired. Austin can support two festivals. I wish someone came in and had a real music festival in June or July. I GUARANTEE more people would want to go to that over lame ACL shows.

Foo Fighters headling = FAIL.

ACL Committee = irrelevant.

What’s up with an Austin company stiffing their own city? How can you even compare this line-up with Lolla in Chicago? Weak.

best lineup in years.

Beck, David Byrne, Vampire Weekend, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, Roky Erickson, Robert Plant, Gnarles Barkley, Foo Fighters, John Fogerty, Octopus Project, Galactic, Overkil River.

Thats 12 bands I’m really excited about seeing right there. Most of which I’ve never seen live before.

So glad so many are disappointed with the lineup. Now maybe Austin can have one of their events back, what with SXSW really being an “industry” event and all.

I love this city, and the variety of music we have. Send Radiohead to Chicago, I’d much rather see Beck and Foo Fighters, anyway.

Funny that the brain-trusts who think this lineup is amazing label the dissenters as “musical snobs”. Although I’d much rather be a musical snob than be so “open-minded to new music” that my brains have fallen out. There are very few good bands in existence, period. But I guess Austinites do really keep Austin weird by liking just about anything. Otherwise known as having “poor taste” or “no standards”.

You’re excited about Manu Chao? Gag me. Jakob Dylan? Terrible songwriter and beyond boring music. I HAVE listened to the clips of most of these bands that I wasn’t already aware of, and I’m sorry, but there is not an extraordinary “unknown” act out there.

To the genius who instructed us to sell our tickets if we don’t like it - duh - we’re already on that, thanks.

And to the people who say “stay home, more room for me”, you are sadly mistaken. It’ll be as packed as ever. There’s plenty of “open-minded” people out there, and I hope you all are very happy together.

Enjoy Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band! I hear they’re really great!

The headliners at this years’ ACL are by far the weakest ever. There are some great bands down the list a little, but lets face it, this festival’s big names just don’t justify the ticket price.

C3 might as well rename it KGSR fest.

Rising ticket price + this lineup = Totally unacceptable.

And to all the people saying “Don’t go!” or “Sell your ticket!”… F off!

For a lot of us, ACL is the highlight of the year. We absolutely want to be there. We just want our money’s worth in comparison to other music festivals, and to have some well established, big time talent to compliment the “undiscovered” or “local” bands.

Ok, so I was not going to get into this but when someone started bashing manu chao I had to throw my two cents in… So, headliners are a little weak this year (but great under that). What makes me wonder is why people keep saying Lolla is so great. Radiohead (zzzzzz!! - most overrated band in modern history) NIN (really????, come on) RATM (ok, this one is pretty cool) Wilco (played every ACL) Kanye West (zzzzzz)…

So to the idiot who bashed Manu Chao as a “gag”, please go to Lolla and hang out with emo kids whose idea of a good time is RADIOHEAD…. hahaha

By Ashley

April 17, 2008 12:23 PM | Link to this

2 days later and still the disappointment hasnt gone away! Middle tier looks good, but the headliners SUCK! If I would have know this is what the lineup was going to look like we wouldnt have bought our 3 days passes in advance. We’re thinking about selling them. Way to go C3.. you put everything in Lolla and really blew the lineup for ACL this year.

With my luck David Byrne will be scheduled the same time as Manu Chao. I never heard of Manu Chao but there seems like a lot of positive hype about him on this page so I look forward on seeing him.

By thoughts?

April 18, 2008 9:07 PM | Link to this

hmmm. well, I think the problem isn’t as much lack of headliners as it is that acl tries too hard to appeal to everyone and ca$h in on diversity. it started out as a more kgsr, austin music fest with bands in that genre and would dip into the “indie” scene now and again. I don’t know if they saw how much cheaper indie bands were to get or are trying to go after that scene more, but either way, they NEED to be playing to their base. The original fans of the fesitval want some big headliners and mainstream music, not hipster bands. You can get these acts at sxsw or even fun fun fun fest and for cheaper and sometimes free. These are the bands that play at clubs all year round anyway. ACL needs to stick with what it knows best and leave the smaller/medium sized stuff to people in that scene

The idea that ACL is breaking these new bands is silly. The “underground” bands playing are already the hottest bands on the blogs and have been for quite some time. They’ve also already been touring and established and most have already played SXSW in the spring, so they’ve only cherry picked the biggest they could get from that world and mixed them in with the Fogerty’s and jam bands of the festival…with hopes that everyone will pay the high price ticket. They should have stuck with the classic stuff to fill most of the schedule up. People in the indie world want to go see a whole show of bands they like and not see a few a day for that price tag.

I think in the long run it’s a good move not to rely too much on headliners to sell tickets. New Orleans Jazz & Heritage festival has been going strong for over 30 years. No one goes just because of the headliners, but because of the overall lineup.

I am one of those who bought $150 tickets…I know better next time to wait…Saw Foo Fighters at Neil Young benefit…very charming…but can’t remember one song…they are NOT headliners…Someone is making a ton of money off this fest by not hiring any REAL headliners! Fogerty, Byrne, Beck all GREAT…but not one could sell out an arena on their own!!! Let’s get real..

Apparantly Austin folks are smoking something…and it ain’t the good stuff ;) ROBERT PLANT! I’m 28 years old and never in a million years would I ever think I would see Robert Plant. I’m SO excited AND grateful I bought early-bird tix….4 of them. And if you haven’t seen Beck, you are in for a treat. One of the things I love about ACL is the atmosphere. If a band you don’t like is playing, there is still so much going on. The art is awesome, the food is great, the beer is cold and nothing beats a bottle of wine under the stars in Zilker Park. Quit complaining people…y’all have gotten spoiled with Austin’s coolness. I landed here 3 years ago and ACL is one of the reasons I adore this city.

I think that ACL Fest has begun to take on its own flavor over the years (in the same way that Jazz Fest has developed its own personality over the years), and has begun to become a unique experience with eclectic, adult-oriented lineups that are much deeper than a lot of the fluff that you hear on the radio. If all of the top 40 kiddos are unhappy and stay home, then hopefully that will just make for a less crowded, more entertaining experience for the rest of us.

Well, I am a 50 yr old lover of live music, and this years line up is a really good mixture of music. I notice that those that are dissapointed in the line up mention bands that would be considered alt/indie/electronic/pop rock. Well believe it or not, there are other types of music, like blues, rock and roll, jam bands, country, folk, bluegrass and the various combos of these. So if all you want to see/listen is one type of music, than by all means spend your 4+ a gallon for gas and go to those other fests. Means less young dumb drunk idiots to be around. Sorry to say that not all fest attendies are 25 or under. I’ve been to the fest at least one day every year, and last year(for me) was the lackluster year. I love Bob Dylans music, but be truely sucked in this type venue. Jacob Dylan will be far better. I’ve seen Fogerty a few times and he can easily teach the up and comming bands how to put on a show. Really looking forward to seeing David Byrne(Talking Heads were a GREAT band),Plant/Krausse(WOW, what a duo), Back Door Slam, Lee Boys, Joe Bonnamassa, Gillian Welch and the list goes on. Yes I live in Austin, so no driving for me. I consider myself very lucky to live in this GREAT LIVE MUSIC CITY, and soon to come FREE music, “Blues on the Green”. So to all that are dissapointed in this years line up, sell your ticket, or better, tear it up. Means less annoying people so I can enjoy my 3 days of GREAT MUSIC.

While I am not familiar with a lot of artist in this country, I was indeed made to feel something magical while listening to and loking the energy of The Jones Family. Even though they are a religious group you feel everything except religion, you actually feel the presence of God. They make you happy and leave the WaMu tent feeling happy and alive. For all I’ve read here, this powerful family is not even mentioned. To me they express what the festival is about…music, family, fun, good time, leaving feeling you been somewhere great.
