Weekend Picks: Friendly Ghosts, DJ Battles and rock star dreams

Picks

Friday: Church of the Friendly Ghost night at Salvage Vanguard Theater. Here’s a show that’s hipper than you: Church of the Friendly Ghost presents a night of experimental sounds, with the flickering harmony of Lori ‘16mm’ Varga’s film projections. Precious Blood, Weird Weeds, Silver Pines and Some Say Leland will perform at the Salvage Vanguard Theater, 2803 Manor Road, beginning at 8:30 p.m. It’s only $5. — Michael Corcoran

Friday: DJ Melee at the Mohawk. 3 DJs square off in a knock-down drag out competition sponsored by SoundCheck Magazine. Before the competition each DJ will be given 5 minutes to pillage a local record store for 30 slabs of vinyl to rock a 30 minute set. As they leave the store the records will go into a locked box until competition time. The DJs will go head to head in a live performance during which they will be judged on their mixing skills and musical knowledge. This is round one of the Austin competition and the competitors include DJ Manny, DJ Tweedy and Golden Hornets from Japan. Free. —-Deborah Sengupta Stith

Friday: Karaoke Apocalypse at the Alamo Ritz. Wanna rock? The nice folks at the Alamo have teamed up with Austin’s premier live karaoke band to help you realize your dream of being a rock star without even having to help haul a heavy amp up the stairs or pay the bassist’s bar tab. Competitors will choose their star track from the band’s roster of 80 classic metal and punk tracks. While fronting the band, they’ll be judged on “Showiness, Flashiness, Punkiness and Aloofiness” with a bonus point afforded to those who actually sing in tune. Considerately, the Alamo has scheduled this event at midnight, giving you (and the audience) plenty of time to imbibe in a little liquid courage to help get that rock ‘n’ roll attitude going strong. $5 —-D.S.S.

Friday: Marcia Ball at Antone’s. ‘New Orleans is a party town’ is the first chorus on Marcia Ball’s new LP ‘Peace, Love & BBQ,’ which brings the funky Big Easy spirit to a recording studio on South Lamar Boulevard. Help Austin’s favorite Creole-flavored piano queen celebrate the release of her new Stephen Bruton-produced album at Antone’s. It’s going to be a party, y’all. — M.C.

Friday: Charanga Cakewalk at the Continental Club. Charanga Cakewalk is Michael Ramos, the former keyboardist for BoDeans and Patty Griffin who has made a pair of brilliant ‘cumbia-tronic’ albums under the name. This is Spanish music at ‘Twin Peaks,’ grounded in tradition, but given to eerie exotica. Opening is the like-minded Patricia Vonne, who grew up loving the blues but keeps delving back to her Mexican American roots. — M.C.

Saturday: Table Manners Crew Old School night at Plush. After being crowned 360’s Your A-List Best Club DJs in Austin, the treacherous DJ trio of Tats, Diggs and Nerdy Harry host a retro theme night. You’ll hear no tracks that dropped past ‘92, and old school hip-hop attire (track suits, kangols, gold chains, door-knocker earrings) is highly encouraged. —-D.S.S.

Saturday: British Sea Power at Club DeVille. This indie rock buzz band from Brighton, England packed a wildly enthusiastic house during their SXSW set at Maggie Mae’s last month. Now they’re back to rock for the rest of Austin.

Saturday and Sunday: Art City Austin. Just as the downtown skyline has dramatically changed, the Fine Arts Festival has evolved into the more urban-sounding Art City Austin Festival. Here’s the live music lineup:

  • Austin City Hall Stage, Saturday: the Belleville Outfit, 11:45 a.m.; the Octopus Project, 1:30 p.m.; and the Mother Truckers, 3:15 p.m. Sunday: Govinda, 12:45 p.m.; Guy Forsyth, 2:30 p.m.; and Brave Combo, 4:15 p.m.
  • Seaholm Stage, Saturday: porterdavis, 11:15 a.m.; Freddie Steady 5, 1 p.m.; and Kellye Gray, 2:45 p.m. Sunday: Suzanna Choffel, 12:15 p.m.; Opposite Day, 2 p.m.; and Mundi, 3:45 p.m.

Tickets are $8 for adults, free for kids 12 and younger. — M.C.
