SXSW Spin party lineup includes X, Vampire Weekend and the Raveonettes

Los Angeles punk pioneers X will headline the Spin party at SXSW this year. Also featured will be mega-buzz band Vampire Weekend, the Raveonettes, the Whigs, Ben Jelen, Switches and deejay sets from Diplo and Pandemonium Jones.

The invitation-only event will be from 12:30 to 6 p.m. Friday, March 14, at Stubb’s. For a chance at two free passes, write 100 words or fewer on the SXSW act you’re most looking forward to seeing (post our entry in our comments section). We’ll pick the winner in two weeks.

Astra Heights - mix one part Queen with a splash of Tim Curry (Rocky Horror Picture Show) sounding vocals from lead singer Morales – and you get a most entertaining performance from these rocking guys (in my opinion anyway) – missed them recently in LA and was pleasantly surprised to see them on the bill for SXSW – so looking forward to seeing them perform.

I am really looking forward to seeing The Raveonettes! I love their melodic and dreamy songs. Sharin and Sune’s voices transport me via sound to the 1950’s! A time I wish I had grown up in. I know I want the candy…the ear candy that they provide!

I would LOVE TO SEE X!!! They were my favorite band back in the day when I went to SWTSU from 1980-1984. I used to come to Austin every weekend and saw U2 at The Meadows, Stray Cats and lots of others at Club Foot, tons of people like The Skunks at Liberty Lunch, and NEVER got to see X! :’-( PLEASE PLEASE get me tickets.. I want to sing Los Angeles and Johnny Hit and Run Pauline with them!!! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE

It has to be X.Growing up over here in the UK where the punk scene had moved beyond that initial glam influenced pizzazz and evolved into a grimier more “street” movement,X represented everything that i wanted punk to be.The glamour of Exene and the American cool of John Doe versus the anarcho ramblings of Crass……hah,to this young limey punk there was (and is!) no contest. When i discovered they were playing SXSW with the original line-up,i just knew…i WAS coming to Texas.

Vampire Weekend made me eat a bag of nuts. They gave me a music situation like Tilda Swinton at the Oscars! When you get called out at a Vampire Weekend show you be sure to let them know it’s time to party. Ten dollars says VMPR WKND has fire on their instruments at this show. They have to because it’s a SPIN mandate. In fact, there’s a good chance this band will be forced to perform their show on drugs. This is the reason seeing VW is a really good idea.

How could anyone’s pick be any other than HANSON?? This is everyone’s chance to see true artists masked by teenie bopper fame. It’s going to be one for the history books!! MMMBye!!

For some absolutely ridiculous reason, that I still haven’t quite figured out, I trained 6 long months, ran over 800 miles in over 93 workouts then ran the Austin Marathon. I painfully made it through the damn thing with the incredible help of my iPod. I repeatedly found myself going back to Vampire Weekend songs to keep me alive while I risked my life trying to run that long 26.2 miles. It would absolutely be the greatest reward to get to enjoy them live, and relive potentially painful flashbacks of my journey while sipping on a cold frosty beverage.

This SXSW show I am most looking forward to would be Wing. It might seem (or possibly be) an ironic choice but on this one I believe my heart is pure. Of course I would love to see X, but Wing to me is vital punk rock I cannot miss. Whatever she it is she does, it’s intensely DIY and, most importantly, it’s out of love for playing. I mean for pete’s sake, she was raising money for her SXSW trip from New Zealand to Austin by offering to call you and sing live for $3.00. We’re desperate, indeed.

the need to see sea wolf comes from no other than my 5 year old son, Jack. you see, Jack was fumbling through my itunes in search of his then favorite song, “we will rock you”. as a parent of two, patience is a must, but this particular song is not meant to be heard daily for weeks on end. this i learned. jack thankfully found sea wolf’s “your a wolf” and we are in business. play it again, jack.

I would like to see the Raveonettes. The sound they produce is a lot like the dutch beat groups I remember from when I grew up but they gave it a modern swing. Also like the kind of avantgarde covers they use for their cd covers.Further have to mention that when the first cd came out it was short but powerful. Ever since they are now more mature with variations in the music and fuller in sound. This all make for a band I would like to see at this year sxsw hope this will be chosen greetings and happy listening Tom

The band I’m most excited about is These New Puritans. I only have 4 of their songs released as singles (album comes out 3/18) but I can’t stop rocking out to them in my car. They have already floated to the top of my listens on last.fm.

X!!!! My first concert ever was seeing X when I was 15 years old. My brother took me. I looked like a nerd but I felt cool the whole night. I was so excited. It was a great show. However, the guitarist puzzled me. Billy Zoom just stood there with a odd grin on his face playing those amazing leads. How could his body not express what he was playing?!?!?! Still it was a great show, and it made me much cooler at school the following week when I told everyone what I’d done. It’s been almost 25 years since that night, and I would love to see X again. To see them with the Ravonettes and Vampire weekend would only sweeten the deal. I would pay money to see all of the bands and will have to…unless I can get into this party. Fingers are crossed!

I am going to see Vampire Weekend whether it is at the Spin Party or somewheres else…but would prefer this day party; my need to see them having nothing to do with all the recent hype/acclaim they have been getting! I have been following them for almost a year now and predicting thier arrival and hype @ SXSW, now that it has all come to fruition, I feel like I should be at this event to bask in the decibel glow surely to blanket the crowd….will trade first born….CHEERS!

The WHIGS completely ripped it up last year at the Ritz. I should have seen more of it had I not been distracted by a#%clowns next to me trying to impress their buddies with text-messages that were being displayed on the big-screen above the bar.
Oh, did I mention that I’ll do my best to keep Beatle Bob from getting on stage at the Spin party.

We saw X at Stubb’s in 2006 and had the most hilarious punk rock experience of our adult lives! I was carrying a “stupid-a*s Dorothy basket” as a purse. When the mosh pit erupted my basket got kicked and everything went flying: money, credit cards, keys, etc. My man sprang into action to recover important stuff. He was furiously grabbing things from people. We ended up with more money than we started with (hahahah) but no keys. Now we are married and pregnant. I can’t stay up late enough to see X at the Continental. Please invite us to the day party!

Dorothy purse = wicker basket with handles. Fourth song, wave of humanity tumbles and basket ejects, yes, “money, credit cards, keys,” but alas also 52 playing cards, which I see as 52 credit cards. I drop to recover, the slam dance surge blankets me, I pop up in a misguided attempt to keep them off the 52 credit cards, spreading my arms in bilateral stop signs which of course invites the masses to “smash the old guy” trying to stop the mosh. Kind-hearted fans, though, returned playing cards to her one by one. Why playing cards? A mystery of marriage.

Motor “freakin” Head!!! Can’t wait to see this legendary band that is the roots and beginning to so many punk, rock, and metal bands of today. I’ll be settin on a stump one of these days with my grandkids tellin them about the days before email and the internet and say “oh yea, did I tell I got to see Motorhead” Wow granddad, your way cool! Being cool for my future grandkids is one thing to look forward to, for now, I can’t wait to enjoy ’08 SXSW with my buddies. This year’s line-up is the best ever and this is my 9th year.

~Vampire Weekend!!!~ I was moved beyond words when I found out Vampire Weekend joined the SXSW craze! I am newly introduced to them through a friend of a friends myspace page! Curiousity got the best of me as destiny guided my finger to click on their page.My ears have been on cloud 9 since! I know now it is written in my life book to attend their show and my work will be done here!

Most Looking forward to?! Yikes that’s tough with so much talent in one city. But I have to admit I’m a digi-head so I’m gonna go with Boyz Noize. But Digitalism is close behind. Can’t wait!!

I would love to see X. That was the first any only time I have been backstage at a concert, and they were all really cool-not what I expected at all. I would love to see them again, especially at Stubbs-rp
