Weekend Picks: Psychedelic pop, funky grooves and abundant Angels

Friday: Handsome Joel Foundation benefit at Elysium. It’s been five years since Red River fixture and scene titan Handsome Joel Svatek was killed by a drunken driver. Come celebrate his life and support the foundation that bears his name with Suplecs, Dixie Witch and Brewtality Inc. —-Joe Gross
Friday: Sierra Leone Refugee All Stars at Flamingo Cantina. In a true story of the healing power of music, this reggae band was formed in a refugee camp in Guinea by a group of musicians fleeing the violence in their native Sierra Leone. After being discovered by documentary filmmakers who shot an award-winning flick about the group’s plight, the All Stars found themselves on a global stage. They’ve been touring worldwide with a message of hope and harmony since 2006. Expect an uplifting night at Flamingo Cantina. —-Deborah Sengupta Stith
Friday: B-Scene at the Blanton. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I like my art with a couple cocktails on the side. Conveniently enough, the Blanton throws these monthly shindigs for those of us who are a little culturally challenged. This one features funky grooves from the Reverend Get Down of KVRX’s Afro-boogaloo Soul Revue, aka Thomas Fawcett, host of the fine little blog The Corner, along with Andean folk ensemble Chaski and, as always, plenty of Blantinis. Oh yeah, and there’s a new art exhibit called “The Virgin, Saints and Angels.” $10 —-D.S.S.
Friday: Flogging Molly at Stubb’s. The West Coast Dropkick Murphys is the easiest description of these guys, but that’s also a compliment. Apparently, you can’t have too many. This show is sold out. —-J.G.
Saturday: Grupo Fantasma at Antone’s. Austin’s favorite cumbia/funk band hosts a throwdown at Antone’s with longtime friends the excellent pop en español ensemble Maneja Beto. You know the drillie; show up ready to move. $14.50-$16.50 —-D.S.S.
Saturday: Super Furry Animals at Emo’s. These Welsh weirdos’ 2007 album ‘Hey Venus!’ points right back to their Beatles-worshipping, psychedelic pop roots. $15. —- J.G.
Saturday: Angels and Airwaves at Stubb’s.Fronted by former Blink-182 and Box Car Racer guitarist/singer Tom DeLonge, Angels and Airwaves has released two albums. The 2007 album ‘I-Empire’ featured slick, anthemic pop-rock and a superhumanly ugly album cover. $25. — J.G.
Sunday: Band of Horses at La Zona Rosa. When they get a good head of steam going, that Band of Horses might as well be called Crazy. (That was a Neil Young joke and not a very good one.) Most of the time, My Morning Jacket and Flaming Lips fans will just love them. With Cass McCombs and the Middle Class and Tyler Ramsey. This show is sold out. — J.G.
Sunday: Junior Reid and the Reggae Angels. In the past few years we’ve seen mainstream hip-hop and r&b artists embrace dancehall, a hard-edged, Jamaican booty-club reggae hybrid, like never before. Case in point, Alicia Keys’ 2007 American Music Awards performance, a dancehall remix of her hit “No One,” featuring an appearance by Junior “One Blood” Reid among others. (Check the video here.) Reid’s music marries the club-oriented sensibility of dancehall with conscious lyrical content. If you lose your mind over Damian Marley, here’s a show for you. $20-$25 —-D.S.S.
