SXSW pirates take it outside
Adam Brewer’s annual Texas Rockfest, a thorn in the side of South By Southwest organizers for nine years, is accepting applications from bands to play two outdoor stages at Trinity Street near Sixth Street on March 12- 15. You can apply here for $20.
Brewer, who started the unsanctioned event (originally called Heart of Texas Quadruple Bypass Fest) after his film was rejected by SXSW in 1999, has long complained of harassment from SXSW’s “Parasite Crew,” formed to fight those “piggybackers” SXSW organizers feel are out to damage the fest.
Meanwhile, the Nashville-based RedGorilla Music Fest is moving into some of the Sixth Street danceclubs previously used by Texas Rockfest. RedGorilla is collecting a $30 submission fee from bands.

All Adam is doing is giving a stage and a voice to bands that aren’t signed and try to do what SXSW started out doing- supporting music. Those guys are supporting music as much as they can and only enhances what SXSW is doing, not taking anything away. The shows are free- for locals and badge holders. What’s the problem with all of that? Wgat do unsigned bands have to look forward to anymore? There are minimal label deals offered and the only place to get noticed doesn’t accept bands that are signed anymore.

There is some justice left in this world i guess. These guys have crucified me for being a window for bands that get overlooked. Therefore I have become a “parasite” because I think music is like air, water, blood! It should be shared to anyone with a wanting ear or heart. If you want to BUY into $x$w then you are just like bush or huckabee(a part of the evangelical corporate nightmare this country has become). BTW Any undocumented hispanics are welcome to enjoy the music as well, they are the glue that keeps texas together! Long live rock and roll!
thanks to all who support TRULY independent artists.

Adam. Good for you. I remember SXSW in 1991 when I 1st attended. I discovered Malford Milligan and his band Stick People who were almost signed by Capitol. Back then you could carry your camera and take pictures unencombered. After years of still photography I was going to do something different and applied for videography credentials and was turned down to cover “official” events. Perhaps I can cover yours and other counter culture events. Will send some bands your way.

Yeah good for you! SXSW is so worried…What are they worried about. Are they not making enough money off all those badges? What about the people that live here in Austin like myself that have to deal with all the extra traffic, higher prices, long lines? What do I get out of SXSW? They “provided” a list last year for the fire marshall to check out?? Why? I was at a party at the Blue Genie with about 500 people and it got shut down. Never mind that nobody(owner of the blue genie) didnt know about this permit. They had parties the night before the night after at the same venue. I hope those 500 people call the fire marshall this year and ask him to look into every bar that a sxsw band is playing this year. I am sure there are quite a few bars we can get shut down.
