Weekend Picks: Goofball hip-hop, blues meditations, punk-rock farewell

Friday: Chris Smither at the Cactus Cafe. Boston-based Chris Smither is America’s great blues poet, a master acoustic guitarist whose music suggests the power of Son House and a wisdom informed by the Four Noble Truths of Buddhism. $18. More on Smither. — Brad Buchholz
Friday: DJ Shadow/ Cut Chemist at La Zona Rosa. The tag team DJs take their amazing feats of live mixing on the road. Mash-ups are lovely, but nothing compares to hearing two DJs, four turntables (each!) and two loop pedals, to hear decades of musical history edited as-it-happens into body rhythms. $30 advance, $32 day of show. (Technically sold out) - Joe Gross
Friday-Saturday: Megon Fest. A going-away party for Austin punk scenester Megon McCaul. Chicago underground rock lifers Masters of the Obvious join Manikin and the Young on Friday at Beerland. Eighties-punk revivalists Criminal Damage (featuring members of hardcore punk gods Tragedy), the Marked Men, Austin garage kings the Hex Dispensers and newcomers Deskonocidos play Saturday at Emo’s. No advance tickets. - J.G.
Saturday: Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit at Antone’s. Ex-Drive-by Trucker Isbell has received critical acclaim for his debut solo release “Sirens of the Ditch.” He plays at Antone’s with backing band the 400 Unit. Will Hodge opens. $15.
Saturday: Black Joe Lewis and Big Sam’s Funky Nation at the Continental Club. Local soul/rock up-and-comer Black Joe Lewis opens for Big Sam’s Funky Nation, featuring the former trombonist for the Dirty Dozen Brass Band. $10 —-Deborah Sengupta Stith
Saturday: Funk Fellowship at the Dirty Dog Bar. San Antonio’s excellent soul duo Mojoe headlines this showcase of funk, jazz and hip-hop. Local act Diasporic and San Antonio’s Groove Movement open. —-D.S.S.
Sunday: ‘What to Say ‘Bout MLK’ at Flamingo Cantina. Austinsurreal’s Matt Sonzala honors Martin Luther King Jr. and celebrates his new life as an Austinite with his first local event, a hippie-friendly, hip-hop gathering at Flamingo Cantina. Dub specialists Grimy Styles headline this showcase, which also features performances from local hip-hop heavies Bavu Blakes, Zeale 32 and Gerald G. My favorite hip-hop soul goofballs from Dallas, PPT, will also be in town for the party. —-D.S.S.
Bonus Monday Pick: Eugene Robinson/Howl at Emo’s. In the lounge, Oxbow singer/fighting enthusiast Eugene Robinson reads from his book ‘Fight, or Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About (Expletive)-Kicking but Were Afraid You’d Get Your (Expletive) Kicked for Asking.’ In the small room, Rhode Island punk-metal bands Howl and St. Jude bring their cracked screams and guitar thunder to town. - J.G.
