In the clubs with Cobretti

cobrettiblog1.jpg

Sometime in the past eight or so years, “metalcore” or “metallic hardcore” exploded as a subgenre. Suddenly, every town had a couple of bands playing death-metal guitar parts at hardcore tempos with a singer screaming like Cookie Monster, bands that could stop on a dime for a tempo change or a mosh-pit breakdown and whose members all had faux-hawks.

What’s a faux-hawk? You know what a faux-hawk is —hair swept to the middle like a mohawk. Your last waiter had one. Yeah, that haircut.

Adam Elias is sick of that haircut. He plays guitar in Cobretti, a surprisingly non-lousy rock band that finds a comfortable spot between precision metalcore and the sort of sloppy two-guitar hardcore punk that made our country great. Cobretti launched at the end of 2006 as a response to faux-hawk-core.

“We started going to more shows and everything there was about how people looked and were dressing,” Elias says. “It wasn’t about the spirit of the crowd at all.” The band includes singer Jason Knittle, bassist Shaun Gonzalez, drummer John Sanchez and second guitarist Stephen Sanchez (no relation).

Right now, the band is sitting on a finished album, waiting for the right time to release it themselves.

And, of course, the band plays Red 7 a lot; Knittle is a bartender there. “We love that club; it’s definitely our home,” Elias says. “Everybody is just themselves there.”

In the clubs: Cobretti plays Red 7 Friday and Tuesday.

Hannah Montana look-alike contest, will-call open

Do you look like Hannah Montana?

Dress up like Hannah Montana! We’ll be at Barton Creek Square Mall from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday to take pictures of people who come dressed as Miley Cyrus’ alter ego. The first 50 Hannah look-alikes in line will be photographed; the photos will go online at Austin360.com and some will be printed in the Jan. 24 edition of XL. People can vote online for the person who most resembles the pop singing sensation. Prizes (sorry, we don’t have tickets to the sold-out Jan. 24 concert at the Frank Erwin Center) will be awarded. Check back for more details!

Erwin Center will-call open

The Erwin Center is at 1701 Red River St. From a news release Tuesday:

Fans who selected will-call as the delivery method for the sold out Hannah Montana show on Jan. 24 should come by the Frank Erwin Center Box Office as soon as possible during regular business hours to pick up their tickets, if they have not already done so. Tickets will be available for pick up at will-call on the day of the show, but fans are encouraged to pick up their tickets earlier, if possible, to avoid long lines on the day of the show. Frank Erwin Center Box Office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday.

No writers for Grammys?

The Associated Press is reporting that the striking Writers Guild likely will not grant a waiver for members to work on next month’s Grammy telecast. No word on how this would affect the telecast, scheduled for Feb. 10 on CBS. A repeat of Sunday’s Golden Globes approach, perhaps?

Asylum Street Spankers in The New York Times

Ben Sisario reviews the Asylym Street Spankers’ revue, now playing the West Village, in today’s New York Times. A sampling:

“Dedicated to acoustic instrumentation, but mischievously unorthodox in every other way, this octet from Austin, Tex., is equal parts Betty Boop, the Marx Brothers and John Belushi, reveling in moony musical-saw solos as well as the most adolescent vulgarities.”
