1,000 three-day ACL passes and a catch

The Austin Convention and Visitors Bureau has just put an additional 1,000 three-day passes to ACL Fest on sale through its Web site site for $135 each. The catch? You have to get a room at one of the several hotels that have set aside blocks of rooms for out-of-towners.

“We’ve been offering hotel and pass packages since the very first year,” says Cynthia Maddox of the ACVB. “They don’t really need us anymore, but (organizers) are nice enough to keep letting us get tickets through them after they’ve already sold out.”

Maddox says about 55 percent of three-day passes sold for ACL in 2006 were to out-of-towners. About 65 percent of the single-day tickets were from those who don’t live in Austin. The economic impact of ACL on the local economy is more than $27 million.

Once a room is reserved, one night is nonrefundable, so Austin residents who want in on this deal will be paying not only $135, but $70 or more for a room they don’t need.

dear mr corcoran, i know you are the music man so you have got to see this guy play at Irie Bean coffee bar. no he is not my friend nor relative nor client. my daughter and i are both guitar players. so i took her to ruta maya to watch the open mikes for her to play there when she is ready. this guy was playing. his name is Kalu James. he is from west africa by way of rochester new york. i was just blown away. the songwriting and voice stunned me. it was like hearing Aaron Neville with the lyrics of Bob Dylan. so i went to the Irie Bean open mike and saw him there twice. not one performance was the same.this guy is so talented and his well of creativity is bottomless.and no i have not even met the guy. i just thought i would tell you since our town is so full of unrecognized talent . thanks for your time !
