Austin City Limits Festival 2007 lineup

The lineup for this year’s ACL Festival is out. According to our veteran music critic, Michael Corcoran, “A baby boomer icon will close the fest, but the lineup of the sixth annual Austin City Limits Music Festival, Sept. 14-16 at Zilker Park, is generally aimed at a younger, more adventurous rock audience than in previous years.” Do you agree? Check out the lineup and let us know what you think.

Man, what is happening to ACL? The ticket prices are going up and the talent level is going down. Don’t know if i can make the trip for this lineup.

Pretty damned good lineup! U2 or The Police?! Please! I don’t generally go for the headliners anyway. I go to see lesser-known, up and coming artists. I go to be exposed to something new and exciting. To “discover” a new favorite band or artist. Isn’t that kind of the point?

Waahhhh! You complaning folks can go soak your heads. Open your minds, expand your horizons…

The lineup ROCKS! Yes, grumpy nay-sayers, by all means stay home or go some place where the shows are cool enough for ya. Me, I’m very excited!

This is a good lineup for ACL. The only problem I see is that we have Bob Dylan headlining on Sunday, and then nobody else nearly in his league to headline the other nights. They need a couple of more acts to round this out.

Wow! You people obviously don’t even like music. If you can’t get excited about at least 10-15 of these bands, then please, don’t bother even thinking about ACL. This is easily a much better lineup than last year. “sunk to the level of SXSW?” SXSW had an insanely great lineup this year. Quit listening to mainstream radio and actually care about music if you’re going to b***h.

FINALLY, CSE got it right.

This lineup is absolutely dreadful. Attal promosed “bigger than” Radiohead and Smashing Pumpking (to name a few). Ticket prices were raised for the calibur of acts. This is what he got? Sorry to break it to you old people, but Dylan isn’t bigger than Radiohead or a returned Smashing Pumpkins. The rest of the lineup is the same old Austin lame music that can be heard any weekend of the year. I’ll be lucky to get rid of my wristband for what I paid.

Wow, nice catch, Attal. This lineup is very solid. The only complaint I have is that now you have to schedule all these great bands against each other, and we will have to make some very difficult choices. For all those haters out there, open your minds and explore some new music. Some of my favorite bands now, I discovered on the Austin Ventures stage. Take a few weeks to look at some of the artists you never heard before, and then, if you still don’t like the festival, I give you my full permission to come back and complain. ACL rocks.

I refuse to see any band whose name is in small type because that means they can’t be any good. I also refuse to see any band that is in big type because that means they’re a sell-out. The bands in the middle type I will only see if their name is interesting enough, and then I’ll complain about how they fall short of some other band with an equally interesting name. I will also have a miserable time because the weather will be hot, or rainy, either of which will seem to catch me by complete surprise. I will leave the festival convinced I am a better musician than anyone on the stage, still griping about the ten-dollar beer.

Uhhhh….. no offense to Mr. Dylan, but have they announced any headliners yet? Come on, not one of these blands could sell out a “headliner” venue. I wonder if I can get a refund on my tickets. This is so disappointing….

By gladisavedmy$$$

May 10, 2007 9:56 AM | Link to this

It is a good thing they had all of the hype and ticket sales BEFORE they announced this lineup or they would have lots to give away so they could bring in a crowd.

I also hope they have the dust situation under control because I can’t see too many people fighting the dust and hot weather this year!

Let’s hope for better next year!

Even if I’d “won” one of the scarce $50 tickets (did anyone really get the chance at this farce?)…I still wouldn’t go…this line-up is the beginning of the end of the ACL Fest. I saw Dylan with the Dead years ago…he was washed up then doing Bob Dylan covers! Stumbled on the stage…give it up…ACL FEST is DOOMED.

Rev. H. Heat, the Killers, and the Queens are about the only ones I’d like to see. But at what price for a day pass? More than you would pay to see them individually, that’s what price. Guess that means I can free up the weekend of Sept. 14-16 to go do other things. Last year was kinda “ehh”… Thievery Corp (long time friends from my DC days) was the highlight. Thanks for nothing ACL.

All you haters need to crawl back to your hippie shacks and wash out your tie-dyed, dookie-filled jockeys. You guys really smell, and your taste in music is small…small I tell you! All those jam bands you wanna see are all the same…noodling guitars and crappy harmonica antics. This year’s line-up is solid. One word, BJORK! I’m glad you noodle-loving stinkers won’t be there this year, and if you do decide to come and listen to some great music, leave the hacky sacks at home, no solo-rain dancing, and please scrub your stanky bums before you arrive. Remember, patchouli oil only enhances your overall stank.

I guess some people are never happy. Sometimes I think it’s true Austin is too hip for it’s own good, especially when Dylan, My Morning Jacket and the White Stripes aren’t good enough…

As for the intelligence of scheduling a 3 day concert fest in the hot hot sun, that’s another story. Do it anytime between October and March and it’d be great.

TooCool2BimpressEVAR! - I love you. And I love this lineup. If all these posters can’t find music they like in this lineup, they really don’t like music, and should spend their $145 on something really useful to them, like full-season DVDs of “Dancing with the Stars” and nicotine gum. As for me, I can’t wait to see the Decemberists, White Stripes, Ziggy Marley, Bjork, Wilco, yes, Dylan (gotta give respect to the elders) and a few acts I haven’t heard of yet.

Saw Crowded House in Australia in ‘87. They were great! Don’t know what they’re like now, since their drummer committed suicide in ‘05. Can I get a ticket just to see them? I wouldn’t mind seeing Bob Dylan so much, but have you ever noticed that he sounds an awful lot like Tom Petty?

By Jeffer Kim McCrackhead

Although it’s usually fun, the ACL fest is for out-of-towners. That’s why the cheap tickets went on sale over the internet. For locals, the lineup is lame, and some don’t want to be in a crowd of 60,000 to see someone they can see in a cozy nightclub. SXSW is for the industry folks, but if you do your research it’s the best music festival in the world. Just don’t go for the big dried-up has-been names.

I have to admit I’m a little bit disappointed in the lineup… but then I remember that every year, I end up listening to several new bands that I’ve never heard of before and loving them. That’s what ACL is all about, folks. I for one will be having fun no matter what.

Yeah, I’m with the happy folks on this one. The 2006 lineup was a disappointment to me after 2005’s amazing festival. (Although, I actually really enjoyed myself last year despite not being thrilled about the lineup). This year’s is what I would’ve expected last year, a continued building of this festival into something larger and on par with the rest of the nation’s music festivals.

I actually think it’s quite impressive how they blend the big names so successfully with the unknowns in a single festival. And I think this year they’ve pulled that off the best to-date. The big names, for the most part, are actually big names that people know and will enjoy, and the “small print bands” are a huge pool for new musical discovery. Exactly what Austin City Limits festival is about: a little bit of everything for everyone.

Why is everyone complaining??? The lineup is awesome! Not all of us have the time or the money to go see each of these bands individually and ACL is a good way to catch up. Who cares if the bands aren’t “on the circuit”??? I hope none of you whiners show up. Ugh.

This a great line-up. Different acts with different styles of music. The price for the 3 days is worth it at $145 which is $48 dollars a day. The is a great price to see even 2 bands for the prices of tickets now of days. Cheap a** people… Don’t go to ACL then. Have you even tried to compare the prices of other festivals and the amount of people?

Wow, This line up is pretty lame but yet I am biased for sure. I think the best bands that are playing are Muse and Reverend Horton Heat. But dylan is uh zzzzzzzzz. and bjork is weirdly artistic in her own right. white stripes and killers both do not rock. They merely provide fodder for the idiots of music (which there is a ton of) i just wish we got some kick a* Rock bands like the Deftones or Tool or SoundGarden or Rage Against The Machine. There is no way i would pay 145 dollars just to see this crap. If you wanna pay 5 dollars and see a kick a* Heavy Power Groove In Metal Sauce come see my band Scraps Of Life at the Red Eyed Fly Next Saturday the 19th. Be alot cooler if you did!

Well, having been to all the ACL Festivals and the last several SXSW, I can rightfully complain about there being a lot of re-treads. Now, I don’t mind seeing some of these bands again, but it does rankle a bit for them to release the lineup long after most of us bought our three day passes. Sure, that’s my fault trying to save a buck, but you don’t want to miss out completely. I’m sure I’ll enjoy Bjork, The White Stripes, The Decemberists, Regina Spektor, Amy Winehouse, Kaiser Chiefs, LCD, Rodrigo & Gabriela, Arctic Monkeys, QotSA, Gotan, Blue October, CYHSH, Andrew Bird, PB & J, Blonde Redhead, The National, Young Love and M.I.A. So, my money won’t be wasted. I just feel a bit ripped on Bloc Party, Muse, Paolo Nutini, The Killers, Arcade Fire, My Morning Jacket, Spoon, etc. playing again. Not their fault, but, man, did y’all see Coachella’s lineup this year. No comparison. At all.

Wow…a little grouchy aren’t we? Yeah, it’s a mixed bag of talent - duh! It’s a festival and it only costs $145 for 3 days. I’m looking forward to the day I can see something like this again. Currently, I’m in Alaska - we would give up our oil for an assortment of talent like this!

Y’know - I’ve been for the past 3 years, but I’m taking a pass on ACL Fest this year. I just don’t care about the headlining bands. And after the last two years, I’ve learned my lesson about avoiding musicians that are (WAY) past their prime.

What I love is how people get off on bashing other people for their simply stating their opinions. And the name calling is funny; some people think only “Hippies” dislike the lineup and some people say spend you money on some Dancing with the Starts DVDs. Now how many Hippies do you suspect are sitting around watching that show?

Let’s get back to what this Blog was created for and that is to say what you think about the lineup NOT not to bash people for displaying a freedom of speech!

I thought Austin was a laid back city. Looks like it has a lot of crazed music fans!

At least I will get home early Sunday. Dylan will play his typical 50 minute set, skipping (forgetting) all of his best lyrics and then stumble off the stage. At least they were planning on me getting to work Monday. The middle bands are WAY better than the headliners so still worth attending.

I think it is a great lineup. Sure, it would be great to see U2 or The Police play. Sure, some more jam-bands would be nice. However, this is a solid lineup. I would pay $20-$30 to see at least 15 of these bands play alone. $145 is a good deal for the great music and a good atmosphere. I do agree it is aimed at a younger crowed, but this is the future of rock and roll. Bloc Party, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Arcade Fire…all are energetic and fun to listen to. Damien Rice, Pete Yorn, My Morning Jacket, Wilco…all greats.

The lineup is awsome! Who goes to ACL fest to see arena acts? No one you big sissies! Grow up and take a baby step outside of your teeny tiny top 40 box! Yes, it WILL be hot, yes, it WILL be dusty, the sun will be scorching, and if we are lucky, we’ll get a little rain. This is central Texas. If you expect cooler weather, then you are stupid, period. All you pouty spoiled pampered top 40 arena nymphs stay home in the air conditioning. I can’t wait to go, it’s just too much fun!

Heres what a think a lot of us don’t like about this years line up. It’s all one type of music. All this artsy, loud and fast in place of real talent stuff. In a town that gained its reputation by being a Mecca for the blues and country and real, honest rock we don’t get any of that this year. I won’t go into the fact that real bands that forged their career out of pure talent and soul have been forgotten again, but I mean come on, give us the Allmans, or Gov’t Mule, Robert Randolph, something. ACL has become to focused on appealing to the trendy music. A lot of these bands are either popular (because everyone is an indie fan now) or they’re on the verge of popular. I do wish ACL was more like it use to be when it brought some indie acts, but also a lot of national acts who’re just there to play music and have fun. As a veteran of the first 3 ACL’s I know where their reputation as the best festival came from, but I don’t think they will be holding onto that for any longer.

I saw Bob Dylan over 5 years ago and he sounded horrible. I can only imagine it has become worse. I am disappointed that he is closing the show. As with every year, some are good, some suck. They had better have asked my beloved MUSE back after shafting them last year. That third tier is abysmal. Thank God though, I can arrive late in the day to beat some of the heat. Nice that they have Dylan closing. I’ll be home in bed by the time he’s mumbled halfway through his set.

I think the line up is interesting.. I do compare it to Cochella (3 days @249) and to Bonnaroo (All tickets are 4-day weekend passes, which include camping and parking @ 220) and find the ACL lineup a little weak.. I’m glad to see the variety.. but I hope Charles has some tricks up his sleeve.. he might still surprise us.. I think in the end this will be plenty of music for folks who don’t live in the music rich city of Austin. We have it great here!

What the heck is this crap?? OK “music” snobs go ahead and claim how great it is but why pay $145 when there are no acts I would dish out more than $20 bucks to see…and I have seen over a half dozen of the acts on the lineup. The ACL crew could not reel in the big fish (hello Radiohead!!) and the supporting cast is not worth the cash to sit and sweat in the dust bowl. Dylan IS a risky choice as headliner, since it’s about 65/35 against him pulling together a good show (and Tom Petty sounds like Dylan, not the other way around; he who arrived first claims the nasal tone), but he’s one of the most important figures in American music and culture in the last half century, a living legend worthy of headliner status. He just might rise to the occasion when the Austin spirit hits him.

And though there are far too many Austin Regular repeaters, the lineup this year is eclectic, which should make for some interesting cross-pollination. Just don’t schedule Regina Spektor at the same time as the Indigo Girls, please, or Amos Lee up against Damien Rice, or The Killers and The Decemberists concurrently. Such conflicts will, of course, happen, but that’s why the process of evolution left me as a bi-ped, so that I can move from one stage to another. I think it’s a solid line-up with classic acts like the still-rocking Finn Bros’ Crowded House complementing the newer Kaiser Chiefs, and Bjork and Lucinda demonstrating very different integrations of poetry and music.

I’m looking forward to it, in all, but seriously, Asleep at the Wheel and Sara Hickman need to be let go next year so that some force other than their dead, dull robo-performances can be put in their places. Good job losing the Gourds on that count this year, too.

I think that it is great. With SXSW going so corp. it is nice to have a festival that actually represents the Austin music scene. Just because someone has a big name doesn’t mean they have big talent. Part of the festivals appeal, for me at least, is not just the “headliners”, it the smaller stages with some of the most talented musicians in the region. I will go, as I do every year, and expand my musical horizon.

Can’t wait to see Arcade Fire - one of the best live acts I’ve seen. If you can’t find a dozen bands you like out of these 100 some bands you need to start opening yourself up, or just never offer your musical opinion ever again.

Too much indie rock and not enough CBGB. But I’m glad a great young rock band like The Steps is on the schedule.

I’m beginning to think that Charles Attal doesn’t have as much pull as he thinks he does. His obvious inability to bring in big name quality acts is embarrassing.

The list is awesome. I think it is amazing that people who are talking about how some of the artist are washed up, are the same people complaining that Pearl Jam, Police, RHCP and Smashing Pumpkins aren’t playing. Have you guys bought an album in 15 years? Give me a break.

OK….I know I asked for bluegrass. But Del McCoury??? Why not someone younger..hipper..more progressive, like King Wilkie, since you’re obviously targeting the college crowd? I think you’re missing a huge sector (even 20-somethings) that are into the new more acoustic / bluegrass / folk jazz / hybrid. Maybe next year, hummm?

What happened to all the music for adults? This year’s line up is great for my 15 year old daughter, but my husband and I will skip it…

Most of the same bands as previous years. Good thing there is no one significant, or else we would have to pay upwards of $150 dollars. Wait, we are. Not every one in austin likes the singer/songwriter thing. This event is the meaning of boring, overpriced, take your pick. But hey, at least there is no Phish reunion!

do you guys hate black people and rap music? KGSR and 101x arent the only radio stations in this town. this list is lame. this festival is lame. maybe next year it will be 200$ to see some other geriatric former musicians. well perhaps my grandpa and little sister will like it.

Yep. Muse stole it last year (even with a shortened set) and they’ll be the best of the festival this year as well.

Heres the deal; ACL needs to be have a seperate groove going from SXSW. The point of SXSW is to find a whole bunch of small time bands and give them a chance to get some really good recognition, both with fans and with the industry. The point of a (major) summer music festival is to bring together a collection of really big names from the past and present with an emphasis on more established acts. I think Bonnaroo is a great example. They have The Police, Gov’t Mule and The Black Keys all on the same bill. Three very different kinds of music, three decades, three very different fan bases.

Instead, ACl has chosen to just keep inviting the same indie bands year after year, and this year they just went over the top with it. 2005 was festival planning at its best; top tier, middle tier, lowest tier all in the same place. Even last year was a pretty good line up, though they had obviously placed more emphasis on middle tier bands. This year they obviously set a fame cap.

As for Bob, yeah he’s a legend but that doesn’t me he’s worth seeing. I can say this since I have seen him before. He did a lot for music but he’s not a performer anymore. He’s actually a worse singer than when he was young which really means something. He sings like someone is messing with his volume knob and the fast forward button.

alot of the critics on this list might prefer the Big State Festival which will take place near College Station in mid-October, Focus will be on Country, Southern Rock, and Classic Rock. It will be run by the same folks that run ACL music festival and Lollapallooza. The lineup will be announced in mid-June i think. check out bigstatefestival.com

The folks who run these festivals are in it for the money. If you sell enough advance tickets, why book a few more headliners who would command a six-figure payday when instead you could pocket an extra half a million bucks. ACL, Bonaroo, Coachella and Lollapalooza have all become pretty much the same. Only NOJHF has retained its identity and that’s probably why it’s still around after 37 years. Maybe this new Big State Festival will be more like what Austin City Limits was like during the 20th century, before it became all about money.

I’ll go see Dylan for two seconds, just out of curiosity..but really, he stopped being good over 20 years ago. He’s a legend, but listening to him now is painful.

None of the headliners interest me. But I’m ok with that..maybe there will be less crowds at all the other shows. Who can say.

I LOVE this year’s lineup! Yes White Stripes! I think this is the best lineup I’ve seen so far, and I’ve attended the last THREE years. I’m definitely going all three days. And I’m over 25.

I don’t think it’s anywhere near as great as the last two years. I really didn’t see any bands that really grabbed my attention. But it’s always a good time and you give a lot of lesser known bands some much needed attention.

To all you negative people…i would suggest checking out some of the amazing talent that you havent heard of…check out Adam Hood, Brandon Rhyder, and Trent Summar and the New Row Mob! The new talent is almost more exciting than the the regulars….and Bob Dylan is a complete legend! Try to understand what he represents to ALL music !

Okay. It’s NOT that there aren’t a lot of good bands attending - there are. It’s simply that most of the “headliner” acts are repeats of previous ACL’s. Count up just how many bands that have played before. Hint: It’s a lot. That my friends, IS disappointing - unless of course it’s your 1st time to attend. Those are the people that are really excited about this lineup. Sorry, but I don’t want to see the same bands again. “Well why don’t you just stay home and not go?” Shut up, Simple. People expect new talent for a new ACL season - especially when they’ve purchased advanced tickets. I don’t think that’s asking for too much.

HOWEVER! There is still time to add new talent to the list. A little more genre diversity probably wouldn’t hurt either. I think you know what I’m saying. Hmm? Know what I’m saying??? Of course you do.

Now copy my comment and paste it as your own to save time and then hug the person next to you.

Mario Matteoli is worth the price of the wristband. Enough said. If you complainers would spend as much time going to the websites of some of these artists you’re not familiar with and actually listening (with an open mind if that’s possible) as you do complaining you’d be pleasantly surprised. Give it a try. Try “theirname”.com or www.myspace.com/”theirname” and i bet you could find the majority of them.

Austin is, and has always been (in recent history), a city of old hippies and students. This is a line up for old hippies and students - and a good one at that. Looks like just what Austin needs! I can’t wait.
