Cover boy Britt Daniel

spin.jpg

“We’ve got some good news and some bad news for you, Britt Daniel.” You have to wonder if the folks at Spin magazine said that to the Spoon singer before they told him they wanted him for the cover of the May issue (hitting newsstands April 24). The bad news? He has to share the cover with Jeff Tweedy, Perry Farrell, RZA, Tom Morello and some guy covered in tattoos nobody older than 17 has ever heard of (Davey Havok of AFI). Spin’s “Festivalpalooza” issue includes a Q & A with Daniel, in which he recalls playing Lollapalooza 1995 at Southpark Meadows on the third stage. Daniel recalls that the festival was held the day Jerry Garcia died, but that he didn’t hear anyone mention it. He must’ve missed Hole’s set because singer Courtney Love, whose father was a crazed Deadhead, said a few things about Captain Trips. Asked what would be his dream lineup of a festival he curated, Daniel listed Prince, Paul McCartney, Robert Smith, the Wipers, Arcade Fire, Ray Davies, Sonic Boom and reunions of Wire, the Smiths, Modern Lovers and the Godfathers.

Hello. I Didn’t any of those guys but Davey Havok of AFI. I’m over 50. Have seen them twice and have several of their cds. I think you are not well informed.

Um, excuse me… I’m 18 and I know people in their 40’s who know who Davey Havok is. My grandpa who was almost 90 knew who Davey was, and if they play AFI on MTV, I’m sure a lot more than just 17 and under know who he is. So, you’re wrong. Get over it.

uh yeah…I’m older then 17, 36 to be exact, and I adore Davey Havok. To me he is the best singer/lyracist of our time. He has been the lead singer of AFI for 16 years and in my opinion the most underrated frontman. He is nothing short of brilliant. AFI is an amazing band both on CD and Live. They can hold their own with anyone, and I speak from experience. I’ve seen well over 300 concerts ranging from Pink Floyd, Springsteen, U2, Neil Young, Anti Flag, The Who, and everyone in between, and AFI just have that magic chemistry that comes along every so often making them a force to be reckoned with. If you haven’t heard of them and are over 17, check them out ;)

Hello? I join with the crowd above who is also over 17, way over. Took two road trips over the last six months just to see AFI and Davey Havok in concert. I love him! How old are you Mr. Corcoran? You must be either 17 yourself or need to do a little research before writing on the music industry.

I’m nearly 34 and I definitely know and love AFI and Davey. Get with the program, AFI have been in the punk scene for years, since 1991! You really much listen to their music Michael.

Davey Havok. Everyone knows Davey. Explain to me again who the rest of those guys are.

I would recommend to Michael Corcoran NEVER EVER insult or say a bad thing about Davey. A legion of AFI fans are sure to be willing to defend him with their life (figuratively of course). If you are over 17 an you DON’T know who Davey is, go find out! Bianca:”Explain to me again who the rest of those guys are.” 123

Yeah. I am older than 17. I adore AFI more than any other band out there. I have the ink and the ticket stubs to prove it if the DF isn’t good enough.
Check your facts, bukko, don’t make assumptions. I can find you a million more just like me. And I had heard of the long before MTV ever did.

AFI sucks. In the same class as Farrell, Tweedy, and Morello? Ridiculous.

Awesome cover. I’d buy it just for Davey, seeing as how most of those guys only look like the average 25-40 year old crowd that the magazine is trying to appeal to. So, good try, but I’m over 17 and AFI is just too big to be ignored.

Farrel and Morello are awesome, I even like RZA, but AFI has been my favorite band since I was a kid. You seriously need to do research before you can make a statement like that. I know of literally thousands of people much older than 17 that know who AFI is and can point out Davey Havok. Ever heard of the Despair Faction? Look into it, genius. I’m a member myself.

You know what is the funnioest part, I would say that if you are under 30 and you say you have listened to rock and haven’t heard of Davey Havok and AFI I would laugh in your face. He has arguably been the face of pop punk for about 5 years now and a well respected member of the Hardcore/Punk community for long before that. Not everybody likes him but you better know who he is if you say you like rock.

Way to do a little research before you write your piece. Maybe you should have written “someone I have never heard of”

PS I loved your other story “The Beatles: Has anyone else never heard of these guys?”

well done.

Apparently you have to write like a 2nd grader to like AFI. Why is that?

Davey is neither man nor woman (but 100 gross + creepy). Old Gregg has more appeal (and more to say).

MC, hold your head very high for not knowing who he is. All who do will soon forget anyway.

Haha. Yeah. Nobody’s heard of that guy who’s been in music over 15 years.

Just a heads-up, do your research in future.

other AFI fans make me sick. They make us all look like 13-year-old hicks who can’t use basic grammar to save their lives.

so heads up, SOME of us are intelligent. just harder to find, what with the wave of stupid that has washed over the youth of today. that’s probably what he was referring to.

yes, I bought the magazine, but I bought it for Perry Farrell and Tom Morello as well as Davey.

and LOL at how all the tweens freak the f**k out.
