Where to watch the World Cup

dempsey440.jpg

With World Cup fever in the States at an all-time high, there will undoubtedly be thousands of Austinites (and visitors) flocking to watch the matches together at bars and restaurants. Because watching with a few friends is fun, but watching with hundreds of friends and strangers is even better. It’s what the Cup is all about. In fact, I would venture to guess that U.S. matches in this cup will see the biggest bar crowds for any non-Longhorn-football sporting event in ages.

Most of the matches will be shown on ESPN. For those who do not have cable, ABC and Univision will also be televising some matches. Click here for the complete World Cup schedule. (For those of you interested in seeing Kaká right in your face, our Dale Roe has information about U-verse’s 3D options on his blog and Digital Savant Omar Gallaga has information on DirectTV’s 3D offerings.)

As far as the soccer goes, perennially powerhouse Brazil and EuroCup 2008 champs Spain are the favorites to win the tournament, with Argentina, England and Netherlands rounding out the top five. As for the Yanks, we have a wonderfully talented offensive squad with the likes of Edson Buddle, Landon Donovan, Jozy Altidore and the pride of Nacogdoches, Clint Dempsey. Our biggest challenge is on the other side of the ball. While we do boast one of the world’s top goalies in Tim Howard, our defensive side is undoubtedly our weakest link, vulnerable to physical play.

Enough of my amateur analysis. Let’s get to the places where you can watch the game while enjoying camaraderie and food and drink specials. But, don’t forget, you can’t buy booze at bars until 7 a.m. (10 on Sundays, as long as you’re eating), so you’re going to have to exercise some control for the first half of those early matches.

WE’RE SOCCER MAD …

Black Sheep Lodge
2108 S. Lamar Blvd.
707.2744
The busy spot with the killer burgers on South Lamar will be showing all 64 matches. They will feature a breakfast buffet, rotating drink specials and World Cup-specific beer deals. Doors for the earliest matches open at 6 a.m.

The Brixton
1412 E. Sixth St.
370.2749
This east side haunt will be showing all 64 matches, and opening at 6:30 a.m. for the earliest kickoffs. They will serve food and snacks from the new BUS #19 and offer a roster of drinks that includes Trailer Ice Tea, beermosas, bloody marys, and about 50 other beers.

Cuatros
1004 24th St.
243.6361
The wildly popular college bar near campus will be open for every game and will open a half hour before the early games. Breakfast tacos will be served until 11 a.m., at which time their regular menu goes into effect.

Doc’s
1123 S. Congress Ave.
448.9181

5207 Brodie Lane
892-5200

Both Doc’s locations will be showing all 64 World Cup matches. In addition to their normal specials, they’ll be serving $1.50 Bud/Bud Light longnecks and $2 Mimosas during all the games. Breakfast tacos will be served in the morning before giving way to Doc’s full menu for lunch and dinner. They will open at 6:15 a.m. for the 6:30 a.m. matches and 8:30 a.m. for the 9 a.m. matches. For matches starting after that, they will be open for normal business hours.

Fado
214 W. Fourth St.
457.0172
The Irish pub in the heart of the Warehouse District declares itself an official World Cup bar, and backs up that claim with the showing of all 64 matches. It will be serving from a special breakfast menu in the morning, with more food options later in the day. For those looking for some friendly action, they are running a World Cup fantasy game. I am told they intend to open at 5:45 a.m. for the 6:30 a.m. matches. Additionally, Fado will be showing replays of the major matches in the late afternoon and evening.

Lion and Rose Pub
701 S. Capital of Texas Highway
335-5466
Showing all 64 matches, this Westlake pub will open at 6:30 a.m. for early matches and 9 a.m. on days there’s a kick-off at 9, serving a breakfast menu in the morning and some half-price appetizers in the afternoon

The Nomad
1213 Corona Dr.
628.4288
The bar on the “upper east side” will be showing all 64 matches with specials to be determined.

Screaming Goat
900 W. 10th St.
477.4628
The taco specialists will be showing all 64 matches, opening in time for 6:30 a.m. kick-offs. They will also offer $1 beers, likely Mexican beers, I am told.

The Tavern
922 W. 12th St.
320.8377
The two-story restaurant and bar with the sinfully sweet burger buns will open at 6:15 a.m. for the 6:30 a.m. matches and serve breakfast tacos and breakfast-inspired cocktails. Additionally, they will run a morning happy hour from 7 to 10, during which they offer $1 off wells and drafts. For the second round of matches, they will open at 8 a.m.

Third Base
1717 W. Sixth St.
Building 2, Suite 210-R
476.2273

3107 S. I-35, Suite 810
388.2273

9600 S. I-35
Building B, Suite 500
381.2273

Each of this sports bar’s three locations will show all 64 matches, with the bars opening at 6 a.m. for 6:30 a.m. matches. They will feature a limited breakfast menu and offer drink specials specific to each match.

WE LIKE SOCCER, TOO

Alamo Lake Creek
13729 Research Blvd.

Both Bikinis will be opening at 9 a.m. and serving breakfast for the following matches: South Africa vs. Mexico (June 11), Slovenia vs. United States (June 18), Mexico vs. Uruguay (June 22) and United States vs. Algeria (June 23).

Cedar Door
201 Brazos St.
473.3712
The downtown bar will open at 10 a.m. and screen all matches that start after that time. They will open at 9 a.m. for the June 18 and June 23 U.S. matches. Drink specials running throughout the cup will be $2 PBR drafts and $3 Bloody Mary’s.

Crown and Anchor Pub
2911 San Jacinto Blvd.
322-9168
The campus bar home to one of the best burgers in town (get the double) will open at 9 a.m. for the early matches. They will be selling breakfast tacos and running happy hour prices in the morning.

El Arbol
3411 Glenview Ave.
323.5177
The Argentine restaurant will open at 9 a.m. for the group matches on Saturdays (June 12 and June 19) and Sundays (June 13 and June 20). They will offer drink specials along with their normal brunch menu. If you haven’t checked out this restaurant near the medical center, you are missing out. Its multi-level bar scene should be great for matches, especially if the weather is nice.

Fabi and Rosi
509 Hearn St.
236.0642
The cute restaurant whose menu Statesman critic Mike Sutter described as an “ambitious one-stop tour of European cooking” will be replaying games in from 6 p.m.-10 p.m. Monday-Thursday and serving a family-style dinner for $12 with $3 beers. On Sundays, they will be showing a match starting at 1 p.m. with a family-style lunch for $12. For more information, including a list of matches, check out the restaurant’s web site.

Jo’s Downtown
242 W. Second St.
469.9003
At the time I write this, I am told that Jo’s is interested in screening all of the matches. They normally open at 7 a.m., but are considering bumping that up to 6:30 a.m., with a solid decision coming this weekend. May be best to call to find out, and I will update as I get more information.

Justine’s
4710 E. Fifth St.
385.2900
One of the hippest spots in town also has a love of soccer. The brasserie will be open at 9 a.m. for the morning matches and serve pastries and morning cocktails.

La Condesa

499.0300
The tasty contemporary Mexican restaurant downtown will be screening all Mexico matches beginning Friday, June 11, with Mexico vs. South Africa at 9 a.m. Any matches played before regular operating hours will be replayed at night. Drink specials include $3 Tecate.

Mangia Pizza
3016 Guadalupe Suite 100
302.5200
For now, the makers of deep dish by campus say they will open at 8:30 a.m. for the early games and serve tacos and breakfast pizzas (mmm … breakfast pizza). However, I was told my management that there will be a petition at the restaurant, and if enough people sign saying they will show up at for the 6:30 a.m. games, they will open at that time. Pretty cool.

La Mexicana Bakery
1924 S. First St
443.6369
Not a bar by any means, but you can snack on pastries and tacos at this 24-hour spot in South Austin that features a big TV. Not sure if they will show matches on Univision or ESPN/ABC, but I assume the former.

Little Woodrow’s

Usually open at 3 p.m. but will open at 1 p.m. on weekdays and weekends at 11 a.m. They will offer daily specials during the Cup, in addition to $3.25 New Belgium beers (Fat Tire, Sunshine Wheat, Ranger IPA) for the entire month.

Marker 10 at the Hyatt on Town Lake
208 Barton Springs Rd.
477.1234
Stay with me here, as this gets a little tricky. The salient point, however, is that they are open for almost all of the matches. During the first three rounds, which run from June 11-July 3, they will be open the following hours: Sunday 10 a.m. - 11 p.m., Monday-Thursday 8 a.m. - Midnight, and Friday - Saturday 8 a.m. - 1 a.m. For the semifinals and finals (July 6, 7, 10, 11), they will open at noon, 90 minutes before the matches. During morning matches, they will be serving a breakfast plate (eggs, bacon or sausage, hash browns and a tomato) with a drink (beer or mimosa) for $9.99. They will have $3 mimosas, $5 blood marys, offer buckets of world beer specials (Heineken, Corona, Sapporo, and Budwesier) and run some giveaways.

Mister Tramps European Sports Bar & Café

837.3500

Mohawk
912 Red River St.
482.8404
Although they are usually busy rocking out and growing massive beards, the Red River club is happy to pause for some international soccer. They will be projecting the following afternoon matches:
6/11- Uruguay vs. France at 1:30 p.m.
6/12- England vs. U.S. at 1:30 p.m.
6/18- England vs. Algeria at 1:30 p.m.
6/19- Cameroon vs. Denmark at 1:30 p.m.
6/25- Chile vs. Spain at 1:30 p.m.
6/26- Second round match 1C vs. 2D at 1:30 p.m.

The Brazillian restaurant will open at 9 a.m. for the early matches and serve breakfast tacos.

Hey Isaac,

I would try Sao Paulo’s (2809 San Jacinto Blvd. — 473.9988) for the Brazil match, and I know the Chilean fans are meant to be watching at Takoba (1411 East 7th St. — 628-4466).

Mr. Tramps on 183 is a great place to watch the game and get some cold drinks. The kitchen gets really backed up during games so keep that in mind.
