The M.O.
Born in Austin, Matthew left soon thereafter and finally made it back after years of paying his penance wandering the earth. Before coming to Austin360, Matthew co-edited Austinist.com, worked as an advertising copywriter and led tours of the Roman Forum, among other things.
When not busy pounding away on his keyboard, he can be found at book readings, concerts, gelaterias, pizza joints, Barton Springs, movie theaters, the golf course, or home with a book. The M.O. gives readers a little insight into the world of this man without a plan.

Late last year Austin’s Grapevine Market — the locally owned operation that was sold in 2006 to Majestic Wine & Spirits of Dallas — closed. Now, the Round Rock location is set to follow suit. The store, located at Hester’s Crossing Shopping Center, began a sale today and will stay open until they clear out their inventory. What does that mean for you? In the near future, you will have to find a new place to buy booze. In the immediate future, you can buy wine at 30 percent off, liquor at 25 percent off and beer at 15 percent off. Grapevine will be open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday-Saturday until there’s nothing left to sell.

I thought when the economy tanks, booze sales go up. Sounds like they had real good business acumen.

Not surprised at all. Their staff wasn’t particularly interested in selling anything to me, and they acted like I wanted fried weasel on a bun when I asked to buy a gift card. Gift cards? To give to people as gifts? So they can come back and buy something? No, we’ve never heard of those.

The writing has literally been on the wall since December. There has been a huge For Lease sign above the door. They stopped restocking a lot of items. They cut staff, or at least it seems like a lot less people worked there since last year. It looks like Specs put Grapevine out of business. Still, who carries cash anymore?

Yeah Grapevine had it coming, but why demonize the competition (in this case, Spec’s)? Since real competition has come to town in the form of other retailers in the Austin area, you should be thanking the competition for bringing lower prices in the area. Most of the normal prices are cheaper everyday than some absurd sale price off a high margin retailer such as Twin Liquors or Reuben’s. Competition makes it good for the CUSTOMER, hello!!!!
