Your A-List: Best Video Store

vulcanforblog.jpg
Austin may be the Live Music Capital of the World, but we’re slowly becoming the Hollywood of the Southwest, with more and more films being shot here each year and a wealth of young writing, directing and on-screen talent calling Austin home. But you don’t have to be in the industry or a cinephile to know that it’s hard to beat the ease and convenience of renting a movie when it comes to easy home entertainment. And there’s no better place for everyone from the casual fan to the cinephile to get their take-home movie fix than Vulcan Video, as evidenced by its topping the Your A-List poll for Best Video Store.

With 31 percent of the vote, the two Vulcan Video locations, havens for movie buffs and casual night-on-the-couchers alike, stand as beacons in the night (or morning or afternoon) to those looking for almost any video title imaginable. With rock music and classic (and often unheard of) movies playing interchangably throughout the day, Vulcan Video is reminiscent of record stores from the 1970s, staffed by self-professed geeks with a passion for the goods they sell and rent.

Vulcan and other indies of its ilk are generally the holy grail for film buffs looking to check out an obscure title from a director you’ve most likely never heard of, or a film movement you did not know existed. But don’t be afraid or overwhelmed if you walk into the movie dork heaven looking for the latest Will Ferrell movie. They’ve got that, too, and they won’t judge you for your populist tastes. But ask and they may just turn you on to an old French comedy you never knew existed. That’s what makes places like Vulcan Video special: they may know movies better than you, but that doesn’t mean they don’t want to share their passion.
