Seeing her first big Broadway production
Eight-year-old Ava and I went to see ‘Wicked’ last night at Bass Concert Hall. It was her first big musical production and she loved it. Even things I thought would scare her (those creepy flying monkeys) fascinated her. She loved the story, she loved the theatrics, she loved the humor, she also loved trying to figure out how things worked (like the screen on one of the balconies that shows the actresses the conductor so they can keep time with the orchestra.)
It was a late night (no second-grader should really be expected to go to school after getting home at midnight), but on the way to school, we were singing “Defying Gravity” to each other in different voices. Mr. T’s was the best!
‘Wicked’ continues through Feb. 12. Read Raising Austin tomorrow, statesman.com/raisingaustin, for a story on how “Wicked” is used in an anti-bullying program in schools.
