Start whistling, Globetrotters are in town

The Harlem Globetrotters will be hooping it up on Friday at 7 p.m. the Erwin Center. Tickets are $15 to $115. Find out more at uterwincenter.com

This year’s rookie team includes three 7-foot-tall players: Paul “Tiny” Sturgess, Jermaine “Stretch” Middleton and Anthony “Biggie” McClain. Sturgess, at 7-foot-8 is the tallest Globetrotter ever.

The new Globetrotters also feature the top three finishers from this year’s College Slam Dunk Contest, including the reigning champ Jacob “Hops” Tucker. At 5 feet 10 inches tall, Tucker sports a 50-inch vertical leap, and his YouTube videos have garnered more than 4 million views. Joining Tucker is slam dunk runner-up John “Jet” Williams of UNC-Asheville and semifinalist Darnell “Spider” Wilks of the University of Cincinnati.

I’m taking 8-year-old Ava who knows of the Globetrotters from watching “Scooby-Doo” and “Futurama.” Let the athletic hilarity ensue.
