Vince Young issues statement on "Pops"
Former Longhorn great Vince Young issued a statement Sunday in response to the devastating murder of his close friend, Steve McNair.
McNair, the former Houston Oiler and Tennessee Titans quarterback, had been a close friend to Young and his family since Young was in high school.
Young said he called McNair “Pops.”
“I’m still in shock since hearing the news yesterday,” Young said. ” I spent all afternoon and night thinking about my life on and off the field with Pops. Since I was a teenager, he was like a father to me. I hear his advice in my head with everything I do. Life will be very different without him.
“My thoughts and prayers are with Mechelle, the kids and the entire McNair family during this horrible time.”
The bodies of McNair and a friend were discovered in McNair’s Nashville condo on Saturday. On Sunday, police ruled McNair’s death as a homicide, with an autopsy showing he suffered four gun shot wounds.

Vince says he didn't want to kill himself
Vince Young, in an interview with ESPN, tries to set the record straight about that bizarre 24 hours last fall when he went from being booed to being injured to being the subject of an all-points bulletin by Nashville police fearing for his safety. He says he never thought about killing himself but acknowledges that he probably did freak his mother out when he left his home carrying a gun.

Here's an answer to the question: Where's Butch Hadnot?
Somewhere between Earl and Ricky, there was Butch Hadnot, a hard-hitting Longhorn tailback in a fullback’s body. Hadnot ranks 42nd on Texas’ all-time rushing list with 1,042 yards and 11 TDs, the bulk of them as a freshman in 1990. He played just two years at Texas before some academic issues shortened his stay.
After bouncing around with various NFL, CFL and arena teams and working for an overnight delivery company, Hadnot has resurfaced as a volunteer coach with the startup Austin Turfcats, an indoor team that begins play next month.
On the Turfcats staff, Hadnot joins fellow former Longhorns Chris Duliban and Kerry Cash.
Here’s a YouTube clip from Texas’ 1990 win over previously undefeated Houston, when Hadnot ran for 134 yards ad TDs and flattened a whole bunch of Cougars:

Chris Simms lands in Denver, will back up Cutler
Former Longhorn quarterback Chris Simms signed Wednesday with the Denver Broncos, where he’ll back up Jay Cutler.
Call them the new-look Broncos, given their aggressive moves since ousting coach Mike Shanahan, writes Mike Klis of the Denver Post:
One deal the Broncos hope to not make regards Cutler. He will meet with McDaniels next week, the team announced Tuesday. According to a source close to Cutler, the quarterback is not upset because McDaniels tried to trade him last week to Tampa Bay in a three-team deal that would have brought quarterback Matt Cassel to Denver. He’s upset because he doesn’t believe McDaniels’ claim the trade proposal was initiated by other clubs. What’s the difference? When other teams seek Cutler, it means he’s wanted. If the Broncos try to trade him, it means Cutler is unwanted. With the quarterback controversy put to the side, the Broncos have gone about rebuilding a new team. Simms appears to be part of the fallback plan — his two-year, $6 million contract is substantial given he hasn’t taken a meaningful snap in nearly three seasons.
Simms was a backup last season in Tennessee and is two years removed from a career-threatening spleen injury at Tampa Bay, when he had his best season as a pro, throwing for more than 2,000 yards.

Titans put "franchise" tag on Texas ex Scaife
The Tennessee Titans today designated tight end Bo Scaife, a former Longhorn, as the team’s “franchise player,” a contractual move that keeps Scaife from becoming a free agent this off-season.
Reports the Nashville Tennesseean:
“I just hope I can go out there and make everyone proud — the fans, the city, my teammates and just continue doing what I’m doing,’’ Scaife said on Thursday. “I know there are a lot of big things still ahead for me. I’m going to keep working.’’ The franchise tag means Scaife, who led the Titans in receptions last season with 58, will be paid $4.46 million in 2009. That’s the average salary of the five highest-paid tight ends in the league.

Longhorn legend Noble Doss dies
Noble Doss, a University of Texas football star from 1939-41, died Sunday at age 88.
Doss still holds the career interception record for the Longhorns with 17, a mark that was later tied by Nathan Vasher. Doss is most remembered, though, for “The Catch,” a miraculous grab against then undefeated Texas A&M that set up the only touchdown in a 7-0 upset in 1940. The photo (seen at right) of Doss making that 32-yard reception is one of the most famous in Longhorn history, in part because Doss appears to have his eyes closed as he makes the over-the-shoulder grab.Doss was also one of the Longhorns featured on the cover of Life Magazine in 1941. That team, considered to be the most talented squad UT had ever fielded to that point in history, reached No.1 in the nation in mid-season and finished 8-1-1 and fourth nationally.
Doss later played in the NFL for two years with Philadelphia.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home at 3125 N. Lamar Blvd. A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church, 1201 Lavaca St.

Former Longhorn Dronett found dead
Shane Dronett, a star defensive end for the Longhorns from 1989-91, was found dead at his home in suburban Atlanta early today.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution says an autopsy is pending. According to the paper, police responded to a suicide, 9-1-1 call placed from Dronett’s home. A Gwinnett County police spokesman issued a statement saying that they are waiting for the medical examiner to determine the cause of death.
UT photo Dronett was a second-round draft pick of the Denver Broncos in 1992. He also played for Atlanta from 1997-2002 and was a member of the Falcons’ Super Bowl team in 1998.
He was born in Orange, Texas, and graduated from nearby Bridge City High School. Claybar Funeral Home in Orange is handling the funeral arrangements.
Former teammates said Dronett had suffered recent medical problems. He had a benign brain tumor removed just more than a year ago. However, he made two UT games last fall, traveling to El Paso to see UTEP, then to Dallas to watch Texas play Oklahoma. He also played golf at the annual lettermen’s reunion last spring.
“He loved football,” said former UT coach David McWilliams. “He was one of the few guys I ever knew who loved to practice during two a days.”
“Many football players have been described as gladiators, Shane Dronett was a gladiator,” said Peter Gardere, UT’s quarterback when Dronett played. “His intensity on the field was like no other. Every player had the utmost respect for him because of his ability on the field not to mention his presence off the field.
“Shane was tenacious player, a loving father, devoted husband and a teammate that any team would love to have on their side of the ball, and he will truly be missed.”
Dronett, 38, is survived by his wife, his college sweetheart, and two daughters.
He was a top recruit signed by then coach David McWilliams in 1989. He chose the Longhorns over Oklahoma, LSU, Miami and Nebraska.

Durant behind enemy lines in Oklahoma
Jenni Carlson of the Daily Oklahoman caught up with former Longhorn Kevin Durant, who, thanks to the big business of pro sports, now plays for an NBA team known as the Oklahoma City Thunder (formerly Seattle Super Sonics).Seems that he’s having a little fun being a Longhorn behind enemy lines this week.
The Thunder’s young star is playing up the Red River Rivalry. A couple weeks ago when he was at Oklahoma for the TCU game, the former Texas standout added “Hook ‘Em Horns” to every autograph and threw up the Horns hand sign in every photo. “I just like to cause a little controversy,” he said mischievously. “I love being in Oklahoma thus far,” he said, “and I’m going to love playing for (the people here.)” But cheer for the Sooners? “Never.”

Benson sets the record straight on Lions, Texans (oh, my)
Former Texas Longhorn and Chicago Bears running back Cedric Benson said Wednesday that he has met with two NFL teams since his arrests earlier this year.
Benson said he worked out recently for the New Orleans Saints and met Tuesday with the Detroit Lions. He also underwent a physical in Detroit. (He was not there to sign a contract, despite some erroneous information that other media outlets picked up and ran with.)
Neither team offered Benson a position on its roster.
Benson said rumors that he worked out for the Houston Texans are untrue. “I never went down there,” he said.

Benson to Lions? Not so fast, Mr. Councilman
Austin City Council Member Mike Martinez inadvertently launched a flurry of media reports Tuesday when he remarked at a news conference involving the Cedric Benson Foundation that Benson himself could not attend because he was in Detroit signing a contract to play for the Lions.
That’d be news — if true.
The Statesman’s Suzanne Halliburton exchanged text messages with Benson on Tuesday afternoon, and he said no deal with the Lions was in the works. (Benson, who was cut by the Bears after a pair of alcohol-related arrests this summer, told the Statesman that he underwent a physical for the Lions but hasn’t worked out.) That was the end of the signing report, as far as we were concerned.
But another news outlet wasn’t quite so judicious. It included Martinez’s mistaken remark in its story on the Benson foundation, and that’s all it took to blow up in today’s Internet world. The report that Benson was signing with the Lions soon popped up everywhere from Austin talk radio to Detroit Web sites.
For the record … Benson was back in Austin today — not where you’d expect him if he’s suiting up for the Lions this weekend.

'I was never depressed,' Vince says
Vince Young spoke publicly Thursday about his week of boos, knees, cops and a protective mother.
Vince told reporters in Nashville that he has always been committed to football — and still is.
“Football, this is my life. This is my dream. All I did all these years growing up to get to this point and never had an injury like this before in my life. It’s a hard time because I’m a competitor, and I definitely want to be out on the football field with my teammates.”
Vince explained Monday night’s bizarre events, in which he was reported missing to police, by saying:
“Let the cloud go away for a minute, and that’s what I did. I left. My mom seen me; she thought I wasn’t in my right mind. At the same time, I was watching the game, watching Aaron Rodgers do his things … eating some hot wings. Even though you’re paying your own bills at your own house, you still got to tell your mama where you are going now. So I understand where my mama’s coming from. She wanted to know where I’m going because I didn’t take my cell phone because so many people were calling me and making sure I’m all right.”

Felicia Young's 'baby boy' just needs love, support
The Tennessee Titans aren’t the only ones worried about Vince Youn’s psyche. His mother is also speaking out, the Nashville Tennessean reports.
“Vince has gone through a whole lot as a young person. And I think he has done pretty well up to this point. But it is hard, all he is going through right now. He’s hurting inside and out. But he will be fine if people are prayerful and help my baby boy out. He is a young man. He just needs a lot of love and support.”The Tennessean story also adds some context to coach Jeff Fisher’s call to police to find Vince on Monday night.
The Titans had concerns about Young that began even before late Monday night. After Young balked at having the MRI on Monday, Fisher went out and talked to him at his Brentwood home, spending more than an hour with him. The Titans also sent a psychologist, Dr. Sheila Peters, and Tina Tuggle, the team’s Director of Player Development, to meet with Young to try to encourage him. The psychologist said Young was extremely depressed and expressed concerns to the team about Young’s safety. Later, Young left the house and sped off in his Mercedes Benz without his cell phone. He couldn’t be found for some time, which prompted a phone call to Fisher. Fisher then called police, who began searching for Young. When Young was finally tracked down, he met with Fisher and police at Baptist Sports Park and eventually went home.

Vince's injury clears way for Simms in Tennessee
How’s this for an orange-tinged twist in the Vince Young saga in Tennessee? Fellow former Longhorn quarterback Chris Simms agreed to terms tonight with the Titans to be an emergency option while Young is injured.
An MRI showed that Young suffered an MCL sprain in his knee on Sunday. Young will be out for an unknown time period, and backup Kerry Collins will start this week for the Titans.
Needing someone to back up Collins, the Titans turned to Simms, whose tenure in Tampa Bay ended with injury and then insult.

Earl up and running after back surgery
OK, not literally running just yet. But Earl Campbell is in Houston recuperating from back surgery, KHOU-TV reports.
“When I first saw Earl, I was overwhelmed by how disabled he was,” said spinal specialist Dr. Stan Jones, who performed the corrective surgery on Campbell’s back. The procedure called for fusing spinal discs together and removing some unwanted medical hardware from surgeries of the past. “All of this was in his back,” said Dr. Jones, as he emptied a large bag of surgical screws. Campbell said he would not forget the first time he was helped out of bed after the surgery. “Then the doc says, ‘Come on, let’s go for a walk,’” Campbell said with shock on his face. “I said, Huh? This is just the second day (after surgery). I just had this done yesterday.” Dr. Jones answered, “’I know, but we are going to go for a walk,’” Campbell recalled.

Sanya Richards, Super(Bowl)hero
The New York Daily News reports that Texas ex and Olympic sprinter Sanya Richards made a post-Olympics stop at the New York Giants, her fiance’s team, and said a few words. Seems the Giants followed Richards’ progress in Beijing — she won bronze in the 400 and ran the come-from-behind anchor leg on the USA’s gold-winning 1,600 relay team.
“I told them I wished I could’ve made them prouder,” Richards said. “They said I couldn’t have.” “I don’t think she had anybody rooting harder for her than the New York Giants,” added Coughlin. “We told her she’s the pride of the Giants.” Ross - which, by the way, is what Richards calls her fiancée - said Richards had asked him if she could come and thank the team. And when Ross pitched the idea to Coughlin, “He didn’t even have to think about it.”

Gibson signs five-year deal with Cavs
Texas ex Daniel Gibson will be a Cleveland Cavalier for the next five years under a deal announced Wednesday.
Here’s the Associated Press story on the deal:
ASSOCIATED PRESS
The Cavaliers finally made a move this offseason, signing sharpshooter Daniel Gibson to a five-year contract Wednesday. Bringing back Gibson, a restricted free agent, was one of Cleveland’s top priorities. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.
The guard averaged a career-high 10.4 points on 43 percent shooting last season. He sprained his left ankle in a Feb. 20 game at Indiana and missed 18 games.
Gibson, a popular player known by the nickname “Boobie,” had arthroscopic surgery last month on the ankle. He’s already back to playing basketball and is expected to be ready for training camp.
“He’s got a great smile on the court. He can shoot the heck out of the ball and bring energy to our group because guys just love playing with him,” Cavaliers general manager Danny Ferry said.
Aside from signing first-round draft pick J.J. Hickson last week, the Cavs have been quiet this offseason. Ferry hasn’t been active in free agency because the Cavaliers are over the salary cap.
Ferry said the team has been talking to free agents and considering trades.
“We will continue to explore every way we possibly can to get better and give ourselves the best chance and the best window to win a championship this year and to have sustainable success,” Ferry said.
The Cavaliers do have two exceptions ($5.5 million midlevel and $1.8 million biannual) to improve their talent and have shown interest in Boston forward James Posey.
Ferry also must decide on guard Delonte West, a restricted free agent, who was acquired in an 11-player deal at the trading deadline last season and showed signs that he could be the traditional point guard the Cavaliers have needed.
“We like what we saw from Delonte last year,” Ferry said. “We think he and the team will benefit from having an offseason together. So hopefully, we can get moving forward with his contract negotiation as well.”
The pressure on Ferry, owner Dan Gilbert and coach Mike Brown to win an NBA title is mounting with superstar LeBron James eligible for free agency following the 2010 season. That’s two years away, but there’s already rampant media speculation about James leaving for New York or elsewhere, and the talk isn’t likely to subside.
By re-signing Gibson, the Cavaliers brought back their most consistent outside shooting threat. They’re also ahead of where they were last year when restricted free agents Sasha Pavlovic and Anderson Varejao held out all summer before resigning.
Gibson was fifth in the NBA last season in 3-point shooting at 44 percent. He was named MVP of the All-Star Rookie/Sophomore game in New Orleans when he made a record 11 3-pointers.
The Cavaliers are in need of a second scorer to take some pressure off James. Gibson has filled that role at times but not consistently.
“I feel like as time goes on I’ll continue to improve and my role will continue to increase and develop,” Gibson said.
Gibson missed the final two games of Cleveland’s playoff series against Boston with a separated shoulder. Gibson, whose scoring was key to the Cavaliers win over Detroit in the Eastern Conference finals to reach their first NBA finals in 2007, says missing Game 7 of the Boston series still haunts him.
“I’ve had a lot of sleepless nights just wondering where I could have helped the team,” Gibson said.

Benson faces three, alcohol-related misdemeanor charges. On May 3, Benson was charged with boating while intoxicated and resisting arrest. Five weeks later, Benson was charged with driving while intoxicated.
After the DWI charge, the Chicago Bears cut Benson from the team.

I’m really excited to be going in with Burt — he preceeded me at Texas and kind of set a precedent for everyone — and Uncle Billy Disch — never knew the man, but his name is on the field so that’s pretty impressive. Michael Griffin makes calls for Obama
Answer your phone in Austin today, and you might get a call from Michael Griffin. The Longhorn ex and Tennessee Titan taped a recording that is being used by Barack Obama’s telemarketing outfit. Griffin’s recording invites supporters to Obama’s rally in downtown Austin tonight.
Attend the rally, or Griffin might tackle you.
We hear that Obama’s campaign also inquired about the possibility of having Vince Young introduce the senator at the rally — after all, you can’t get a much more powerful endorsement in this town — but Vince reportedly declined. Vince told the Statesman’s Suzanne Halliburton on Monday that he’s interested in the presidential race but doesn’t want to get involved.

Ramonce Taylor violates probation, gets jail time
Former Longhorn running back Ramonce Taylor is headed to jail for five months for violating his probation on a marijuana possession charge. Taylor, an explosive part of the Texas offense during the national championship run, left the Longhorns in spring 2006 when a suspension on academic problems turned into a dismissal when he was arrested on the marijuana charge.
Here’s the Associated Press account of Thursday’s revocation of Taylor’s probation:
State District Judge Martha Trudo on Thursday revoked Taylor’s probation from a state felony drug possession charge, sentencing him to two years in jail. She then suspended the sentence for five years under a process called “shock probation,” sending Taylor to jail for five months. He will remain on probation after his release.
“This will give him an opportunity to straighten out,” Bell County Assistant District Attorney Bob Odom told The Associated Press on Friday.
Clark’s mother, Ramona Clark, began wailing during the hearing and was removed from the courtroom, the Temple Daily Telegram reported. She passed out and hit her head on the floor, but regained consciousness a few seconds later.
“At some time you ought to realize what you are doing to your mother,” Trudo told Taylor. “This is your second and last chance.” Taylor’s attorney, Bucky Harris, did not immediately return a telephone message Friday from the AP.
Taylor’s college career ended after he was arrested in May 2006 and later pleaded guilty to having 4 ounces to 5 pounds of the drug in his vehicle. The drug was divided into four 1-pound bags.
Taylor was dismissed from the Longhorns and has continued to have legal problems with multiple probation violations, including two positive drug tests, failure to report to his probation officer, criminal trespassing and entering a nightclub where alcohol is served.
He was arrested just two weeks ago on a new charge of a possessing a small amount of marijuana, Odom said.
In court, Harris argued that the best way for Taylor to overcome his problems was through hard work and another chance to play professional football.
Taylor told the judge that he recently had a workout with the Kansas City Chiefs.
“I actually had a great tryout and they are thinking about signing me (as a special teams player),” Taylor said, asking the judge for another chance at probation.
“I’d rather be a role model and put God first in my life,” Taylor said. “I lost God when I went to college and stopped going to church.”

Vince Young is back on campus
Vince Young is back on the Forty Acres — taking classes, not throwing passes.
Young, the Longhorn quarterback who left after his junior season and became a first-round draft pick of the Tennessee Titans, has enrolled for the spring semester at the University of Texas in an effort to complete work on his degree, the UT registrar’s office confirmed Friday.
He’s joined back on campus by fellow Titan player Michael Griffin, also a former Longhorn from the 2005 national championship team. Griffin is majoring in youth and community studies.
Young’s agent, Major Adams, told the Nashville Tennessean that Young is about two semesters short of of his degree and hopes to return in spring 2009 to finish his coursework.
Mike Mu, Young’s marketing manager, said Young is changing his major from liberal arts to education and early child development. He is taking about 15 credit hours this semester and might be able to complete his degree with some online courses, Mu said.
Mu said the degree was important to Young because he made a promise to his mother when he decided to leave school early for the NFL.
Young and Griffin, the Titans’ top two draft picks the past two years, will have to balance their schoolwork with their responsibilities to Tennessee, which begins its offseason program on March 24 and will have on-field minicamps between April and June.

Ex-basketball player Goodner dies
Gary Goodner, the center on the Longhorns’ NIT championship team of 1978, has died, apparently of a heart attack, two of his former teammates said Monday.
The 6-foot-7 Goodner was known for his defense and unselfish play. “He was the backbone of that team. He sacrificed his game for everyone else,” said teammate Ron Baxter.
“I’m crushed,” said Johnny Moore, who played with Goodner at Texas and later starred with the San Antonio Spurs. “I lost a person who helped me be the person that I am.”
We’ll pass along funeral information when we receive it.

Earl tells Costas of the hit he's lived to regret
Longhorn legend Earl Campbell appears Wednesday night on Bob Costas’ interview show on HBO, “CostasNOW,” at 8 p.m. Central.
They discuss Campbell’s health issues after a life in football, as well as a hit that Campbell has lived to regret. Not one he suffered, but one he delivered.
Costas quizzes Campbell about the memorable 1978 play when he ran over Rams linebacker Isaiah Robertson.
Here’s a transcript of the exchange:
BOB COSTAS: “There’s lots of memorable plays. One among many that stands out. Isaiah Robertson was a very good linebacker with the Rams. He has a one-on-one shot at you in the open field. You lower your head right into his chest, and he’s out flatter than a pancake.”
EARL CAMPBELL: “That is the one play that I don’t talk very much about.”
BOB COSTAS: “Why not?”
EARL CAMPBELL: “They play that so much, back and forth, about him, until I think it’s damaged his life a little bit.”
TONY DORSETT: “Earl changed that man’s whole life. That highlight that they still run today, it’s a classic. Here comes Isaiah and he just puts that helmet right into his chest and runs flat over him.”
EARL CAMPBELL: “I finally had a chance to see him. And I said, ‘Man, I’ve been looking for you for many years, to apologize to you.’ And he’s all, ‘Man, it’s okay. It was just, you know, it’s just football.’ But because of that one run I think it did something to him, you know?”
BOB COSTAS: “It wasn’t because he was permanently injured from it.”
EARL CAMPBELL: “No.”
BOB COSTAS: “It shows how good-natured you are. You feel bad ”
EARL CAMPBELL: “Yeah.”
BOB COSTAS: “ that he was kind of embarrassed or even humiliated by that play.”
EARL CAMPBELL: “Yes.”

National team coach Mike Krzyzewski was complimentary even as he showed Durant the door:
“With Kevin, one year in college and 18 years old and he’s made giant progress and he’s going to be one of the faces of the NBA and USA Basketball who will be considered next year because 10 months from now he’s only going to get better.”

The Titans’ Web site has some quotes from Griffin on his arrival in camp.
“I was kind of rusty. I went back home [during the offseason] and played seven-on-seven against guys at Texas. But it’s not the same as going against receivers who are as polished as the ones we have here with the Tennessee Titans.”

Ross says he's eager to get on field
The Associated Press caught up with Aaron Ross, the Texas ex who reported to training camp after signing his contract with the New York Giants. From the AP story:
“From day one I wanted to be out there with the vets, with the rookies and the coaches, everybody,” Ross said in front of his dormitory at the University at Albany. “In two weeks we have a preseason game and I didn’t want to miss any time.”
Corey Webster and veteran Sam Madison are the incumbents at the cornerback spot with R.W. McQuarters returning as the nickel back. The Giants are hopeful that Ross, who had six interceptions in his final year at Texas, will be able to contribute to a secondary that struggled last season.
“I am not thinking about starting at all,” said Ross, the 20th pick overall. “I am just trying to learn the system. R.W. and Sam have been helping me a lot. Once I learn from them and get everything under me, whatever happens, happens.”
Ross also may be used as a punt returner. He averaged 11.8 yards in college.

Durant's jersey to be retired
Kevin Durant, the most acclaimed basketball player in University of Texas history, will have his number retired, coach Rick Barnes said Tuesday.
Durant, who wore number 35, swept seven national player of the year awards following his freshman season in 2006-07. Durant, the first freshman to be named national player of the year, left Texas after the spring semester and was selected by Seattle last week with the No. 2 pick in the NBA draft.
Texas has retired the number of one other basketball player, T.J. Ford, national player of the year in 2003.
“Kevin meets the same criteria as T.J.,” Barnes said. “He was national player of the year.”
Barnes also said that Durant left school in good academic standing, remaining on campus to finish the spring semester.
Barnes said it is too early to determine a date for the retirement. Logistics would work best when Durant is free to appear in Austin while the Longhorns have a home game.
The Longhorns’ 2007-08 schedule has not been completed. The NBA has not released schedules, either.
Texas has retired the numbers of two football players — Earl Campbell (20) and Ricky Williams (34).
One baseball player, Roger Clemens, has had his number retired. Clemens wore number 21.
Texas has been hesitant to retire numbers. Campbell’s number was retired in 1979, two years after he won the Heisman Trophy. Williams had his number retired in 1999, one season after he won the Heisman.
Clemens received the honor in 1993. Cliff Gustafson, the Longhorn coach at the time, announced the decision at the the annual alumni game. One problem: Gustafson had not cleared the decision with the men’s athletics council.
“They put the hammer on me pretty heavy after that,” Gustafson told the American-Statesman years later.
Texas produced a policy in 2001 stating that numbers would be honored, not retired, with exceptions allowed for Heisman winners.
The criteria was expanded to include national players of the year to accommodate Ford.

Durant nominated for pair of ESPYs
It doesn’t compare with being picked first or second in the NBA draft, but Kevin Durant has another honor on his plate this week. He was nominated Monday for a pair of ESPYs awards, to be given out July 15 by ESPN.
In addition to being nominated as best breakthrough athlete and as best college male athlete, Durant was a key player in another ESPY-nominated event — the Longhorns’ 105-103 triple-overtime loss to Oklahoma State in January, which is nominated for best game. The other best-game nominees are Boise State’s win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and the Colts’ win over the Patriots in the AFC championship game.
Durant’s fellow nominees for best breaktrhough athlete are Devin Hester of the Chicago Bears, Ryan Howard of the Philadelphia Phillies and Morgan Pressel in golf.
In the best male college athlete category, the other nominees are Missouri wrestler Ben Askren, Ohio State hoopster Greg Oden and Ohio State’s Heisman-winning quarterback Troy Smith.
Fan voting for the ESPYs opened Monday and continues through July 7.
Other ESPY nominees with Lone Star State ties:
— Texas ex Sanya Richards is nominated for best track and field athlete.
— Texas Tech basketball coach Bob Knight is nominated for best record-breaking performance for setting the record for men’s basketball coaching victories.
— Spurs coach Gregg Popovich is nominated for best coach.
— The Mavericks’ loss to Golden State in the first round of the NBA playoffs is nominated for best upset.
— San Antonio’s Tim Duncan and Dallas’ Dirk Nowitzki are nominated for best NBA player.
— Austin resident Andy Roddick is nominated for best male tennis player.

Indecision in Portland?
Though there is a widespread assumption that Portland will select Ohio State center Greg Oden over Texas forward Kevin Durant with the first pick of the draft next Thursday, Trail Blazers General Manager Kevin Pritchard keeps saying that the team has not reached a decision.
The process might have become more muddled by two recent developments:
- Oden did not have a terrific workout for the Blazers on Wednesday.
“I think I could have done a whole heckuva lot better,” Oden said, according to The Oregonian.
- SI.com reported that Oden’s physical exam at the NBA pre-draft camp revealed a bulging disk in his back and that he has not regained full flexibility from a broken right wrist he suffered last year.
Pritchard says injuries are a factor in judging players.
“I would tell you that everything is a worry for me,” Pritchard said. “That’s my job; to worry about everything.”
Pritchard said the organization knows how good Oden is from watching tape of him, adding, “It was really refreshing to see a kid say, ‘I know i can do better.’ “
Next comes Durant, due for a workout on Friday.

Rooster Andrews is back home
Rooster Andrews is home again.
The longtime sporting goods store owner and University of Texas athletics booster spent six weeks at the Summitt at Westlake Hills, a nursing facility, to rehabilitate his left hip and knee.
Today, Andrews went for a haircut with his brother, Bunny. It was the first time he has been outdoors since breaking his hip after falling in his Central Austin home on Dec. 10. He underwent hip replacement surgery.
“The slowness (of rehabilitation) has been hard on Rooster because he’s such a get-up-and-go kind of person,” said Andrews’ wife, B.J. Andrews returned home from the nursing facility last Friday.
Andrews, who turns 83 on March 1, uses a wheelchair and a walker to get around the house. His wife said he has made steady progress and likely will be walking on his own again by summer.
While he recovers, the Rooster Andrews Sporting Goods store at 3901 Guadalupe is being run by their son, Griff, their daughter, Lisa Ard, and their son-in-law, Mike Ard.
