Seattle, with the 14th pick of the draft, selected safety Earl Thomas.
Thomas is the first Longhorn to be drafted this year. The Seahawks are directed by new coach Pete Carroll, formerly of the Southern California Trojans.
Carroll was in Austin, March 31, to check out Thomas’ pro day. That’s when Thomas ran a 40-yard dash in a time of 4.35 seconds, cementing his status as a top pick in the draft.
Thomas left school with two years of eligibility remaining. He’s only the second sophomore to leave UT early.

I do love the back story of Earl helping his family out, shows he was raised by a good and loving family. Take your values with when you go to Seatlle Earl they are clearly paying huge dividends now. Hook 'Em.

Another WO-S Mustang and Longhorn congratulates Earl Thomas and his family. Thanks for keeping "Orange" on the map!

To correct the post above, it was Hurricane Rita. We're very particular about our hurricanes in SETX. As a former WOS Mustang, Orangeite, and Longhorn, I'm so proud and happy for Earl Thomas. He's a class act and he and his family deserve all the happiness and joy of this special occasion. Can't wait to see him on the big stage! Seattle's pretty much like Austin on the water, anyway - here's hoping that he has a very successful career there.

Earl left school for the NFL because his family's home was destroyed by hurricane Katrina. They're not well off financially and he wants to help them out

I understand deep in the heart. It hurts that your aggy team can't produce talented NFL players in even 4 years. The good news is that your players will graduate from your fine institution and go on to jobs that support local communities such as asst manager of the mini-mart in Mexia. Oh yea and buy jerseys with of teams loaded with former Longhorns. We're TEXAS

deep in the heart, you do realize this is the same all across the country right? These players are recruited for their talent knowing full well they are basically playing for a farm team for the NFL, Earl leaving early was his call and not a reflection on UT. Most college students would jump at the chance to enter their profession early with the promise of millions of dollars for their efforts wouldn't you? Earl may come back to finish his degree, may not, doesn't matter to me nor to the University of Texas.

Why the hell would he need to graduate? He came to UT and after only 2 years here he's a millionaire. That's not a bad education. You're right, academics doesn't count here, doesn't need to.

As a Seattle resident and a diehard Horns fan, I am delighted with this pick! I can't wait to finally see him in person this fall!

..."only the second sophomore to leave UT early" this year, i.e., without graduating? But surely not the first athlete to use UT this year as a trampoline to the big time. Come on, UT, you've got a tradition to maintain: the goal is not to graduate any athletes, just to catapult them to the professional leagues as soon as they are physically talented to compete. Academics? That's the other UT, the poor cousin, the one that doesn't count here.
