Reception for Rooster Andrews planned for Saturday

The funeral and burial of Rooster Andrews, a man associated with all things burnt orange for the past 60 years, will be private, but a reception for family and friends is planned from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at UT. The reception will be held in the Centennial Room on the ninth floor of Belmont Hall (west side of Royal-Memorial Stadium).

Weed-Corley-Fish is handling the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, Andrews’ family is asking that memorials be made to The Rooster Andrews Memorial Fund at All Saints Episcopal Church, 209 W. 27th St., Austin, Texas 78705.

Back in the late 1970's, after Vietnam, when I was working on my journalism degree and writing for The Daily Texan, the name Rooster Andrews was inextricably linked to UT football. It was boosters and fans like him who demanded a tradition of excellence from the Darrell Royal coached Longhorns. It seemed like the name Rooster Andrews, whom I never met, was always heard in Austin in those days. To him, I wish happy trails on his journey home to our Lord.
