NFL combine news
NDIANAPOLIS — Offensive lineman Jonathan Scott was the first Longhorn to hit the track Saturday at the NFL combine in the RCA Dome.
He ran a 5.28-second 40-yard dash. Whill Scott wasn’t available for comment, his teammate David Thomas said his training buddy likely will take another run at the 40 at Texas’ pro timing day, March 22.
Thomas, Texas’ star tight end, checked in at the combine Saturday for a battery of medical tests. He’s weighing 252 pounds these days, about a 10-pound jump from the regular season. He’s been wanting to add weight.
But Thomas didn’t reach his goal in the lifting drill. He bench pressed 225 pounds 19 times consecutively, one short of his goal. He’ll repeat the exercise at UT’s timing day.
Defensive tackle Rod Wright arrived here Friday night. He was kept so busy by scouts Saturday that he had no time to make a media briefing that every player here does for the press.
Safety Michael Huff and cornerback Cedric Griffin were scheduled to arrive in Indy sometime Saturday in time for their initial testing Sunday. Huff appears to be a slam-dunk first rounder, and many at the combine were projecting him to go to Detroit.
The Lions draft ninth and a selection of Huff would represent their fourth Longhorns choice in six years. They already have former Longhorns Shaun Rogers, Cory Redding and Roy Williams on the roster.
