Rooster Andrews is back home

Rooster Andrews is home again.

The longtime sporting goods store owner and University of Texas athletics booster spent six weeks at the Summitt at Westlake Hills, a nursing facility, to rehabilitate his left hip and knee.

Today, Andrews went for a haircut with his brother, Bunny. It was the first time he has been outdoors since breaking his hip after falling in his Central Austin home on Dec. 10. He underwent hip replacement surgery.

“The slowness (of rehabilitation) has been hard on Rooster because he’s such a get-up-and-go kind of person,” said Andrews’ wife, B.J. Andrews returned home from the nursing facility last Friday.

Andrews, who turns 83 on March 1, uses a wheelchair and a walker to get around the house. His wife said he has made steady progress and likely will be walking on his own again by summer.

While he recovers, the Rooster Andrews Sporting Goods store at 3901 Guadalupe is being run by their son, Griff, their daughter, Lisa Ard, and their son-in-law, Mike Ard.
