‘College GameDay’ (the hoops version) comes to Austin on Saturday

“College GameDay,” ESPN’s traveling celebration of basketball, makes its first trip to Austin on Saturday for the Texas-Kansas game. The weekly show, now in its second year, features Rece Davis, Digger Phelps, Jay Bilas and Andy Katz. Brad Nessler and Dick Vitale will announce the game.

The first “GameDay” show will be conducted live from the Erwin Center from 10 to 11 a.m. UT officials encourage fans to attend. Gates — Entrance B only — open at 8:30 a.m. Admission is free. A second show will be staged from 7-8 p.m. before the game, which starts at 8, with access only for ticket holders.

Barry Sacks, senior coordinating producer, said the morning show serves as a launching point for ESPN’s basketball coverage throughout the day.

“Our challenge is to get people passionate, loud, and excited during the morning show,” Sacks said. “You want to see a big crowd cheering and chanting. That creates an atmosphere for the rest of the day. We’ll do segments from Austin at halftime of other games, and we’re building up for the huge game, in the main time slot.”
