Take a good (last) look at the Disch

Disch-Falk Field opened its final home season in its current condition Wednesday. After the 2006 campaign, the place will get a much-needed makeover, the first significant improvements in three decades.

Some observations from the opener:

— It wasn’t cold, a real oddity for a February game in the coldest spot in Austin.

— The rowdiest fans were treated to free pizzas, a rare fan-friendly promotion at the Disch.

— Artificial turf looks so 1975.

— The Wild Bunch still doesn’t like the corny sound effects.

— The Horns are the best 1-3 team around.

— The new scoreboard is useless during a day game. The glare on a sunny day rendered the numbers unreadable from the stands. I’m sure that Texas had a lot more runs than the other guys but had to read the paper to learn the score.

— Augie’s tall lefties are going to be all right before it’s all over.
