Top recruit Mouton picks Michigan over Texas

The Texas Longhorns’ late push to land one final piece to their 2006 recruiting class fell just short.

Jonas Mouton, a defensive back ranked No. 45 nationally by Rivals.com, chose Michigan over Texas, the University of Michigan said in a press release. Mouton is going to make a public announcement at 8:30 p.m.

Mouton’s commitment might have vaulted the Longhorns to one of the top five classes in the nation. Instead, the national champions probably will finish sixth or seventh according to most national prognosticators.

I would be willing to bet that Bill, Hawkeye and Mike said usc was going to win too.

I am glad that Mouton went to Michigan, as a Michigan fan and grew up as a Michigan fan for life I am glad that he went to Michigan. I always liked winter and Ann Arbor is a cool city. GO BLUE !!!!!

Let's see! Last time I checked, the Horns won the National Championship of both football and baseball. I don't think UT fans have anything to whine about! The whiners usually just jealous of us being on top and not them.

Those great athletes that decide to go to another school for whatever reason is their choice. They made a mistake in my opinion but I am and always have been a longhorn fan. The latest statistics show that it's not a good choice..ie. Periloux, Bennett, Peterson and a host of others.

It's just a great time to be a Longhorn! Hook 'Em Horns!! Keep up the good work!!!

He may not be smart enough to figure out the weather...but he probably is smart enough to figure out who has a better chance of winning a national championship in the next 4 years. No Vince Young...No title.

He may actually feel that Michigan is a better fit with the academics and all. Texas isnt exactly lighting the world on fire with its graduation rate. Besides Michigan will be better than Texas the next few years.

Lot of comments about weather. I'm not much on 20 below either, but when I'm suffering through 30 straight days of 100+ next summer and 90% humidity, I might wish I was further north, too.
I'll look forward to his matching up with the same Chris Wells we'll see the second weekend in September.

Anyone with knowledge of the game, knows that the University of Texas has more defensive backs graduate to the NFL than just about any school, period! Shoot the list of all pro defensives backs from Texas is somewhat extensive to say the least and is notable beyond what Michigan could muster. It's a loss for both parties... he probably didn't research it fully. Oh well, we'll find another!

I know there must be (or have been) some defensive backs in the NFL from Michigan, but I have never heard any sportscaster comment on the "Long history of great defensive backs" from this exceptional collegiate football program. I have heard this statement made more than once about defensive backs from The UT. Maybe the competition at The UT was too tough. "If you can't stand the heat in the kitchen, don't expect to eat first."

I could understand if the other option were USC. I would really like to know what it was that made the difference.

what kind of California boy chooses cold weather football over a national championship warm weather school who has sent scores of d-backs to the NFL? .... not a smart CA boy ....

I'd rather not have a player that has to think that long about where they want to play ball. They either love us or they don't. Someone mentioned Perriloux. Seems he went to LSU because they told him he'd being playing first year. I haven't heard anything about him since he committed to LSU. Does anyone know? Did he red shirt?

Let's see Michael Huff (Texas) (projected NFL top 15), Nathan Vasher (NFL star), Quentin Jammer (1st round pick). Marlon Jackson (Michigan)(Arena Football) Ernie Shavers (where is he?). Mr. Mouton will regret this for the rest of his life!

A good d-back that could have sure helped the Longhorns, but as good as Texas is, they can still win them all without him! Good luck to Mouton----hope his choice is right for him and the Wolverines as well.

Don't be too hard on Mouton. Obviously he realizes that he isn't good enough to play for Texas so he is going where it will be easier for him to start.

What a bunch of whinnies. Is this the only way you can cry about someone not chosing TU? What about all the others that chose FSU, USC, and the other Top 5 in recruiting? I guess each of them have mental problems as well....guess we'll just have to wait and see how the class of '06 turns out for you whinners....oh and here's some cheese for you.

think the competition will be to tough go to Michigan....

He did not treat the longhorns like that loser that went to LSU. He handled it right and when we play them he will regret the choice he made.

don't need him....we already have 3 starters coming back in Ross and Brown and of course my fellow teamate at Bowie(Austin) Mr. Michael Griffin....as well as 2 solid DB's that we picked up from within the state in Beasley, Brown, Henry, and Joseph.

Just like Perriloux(who should be running the show at Texas next year!), Mouton will regret his decision of not picking Texas.

He was a long shot at least and Mack and Company had to take the shot but anyone that is in the least not excited about this class is crazy. National Championships will become a norm with this kind of talent and the type of person Mack signs every year.

Yes folks we have a winner. This years "Ryan Perriloux Award for Dubious Choice" goes to....
Jonas Mouton!
To be fair to the kid, he probably looked at the DB's Texas has already signed and said I better go north!

Mouton is obviously not smart enough to play for the Longhorns. Anyone who would rather spend a winter in Ann Arbor rather than Austin is, in my opinion, not competent.

Remember Perriloux? Who needs this kind?
If you choose to play in the frozen tundra up north as opposed under the sunny skies of Texas, in the words of a once famous rock-n-roller, "a southern boy don't need you around anyhow"!
