Your A-List: Best Neighborhood Grocery

wheatsville.jpg
One of the only things I don’t like about living on the south side is that it takes more than five minutes to get to Wheatsville Food Co-op, 3101 Guadalupe, just north of the UT campus, and so therefore it doesn’t count as my “neighborhood grocery.” But for many of you, 44 percent of you in fact, Wheatsville is your favorite place to swing by and grab a few things on your way home.

The store, which opened in 1976 and sells on local, natural and organic products, is undergoing a massive renovation that general manager Dan Gillotte (the guy behind @wheatsville on Twitter and the store’s blog) says will be done in a few months. Wheatsville, which is a true co-op that you can buy into and receive voting rights and a discount in return for, is open during the construction, so stop by and check out the selection of local eggs and meat and fresh produce, even if you don’t live nearby.

Your A-List: Best Chinese

Contrary to popular belief, all Chinese restaurants are not created equal, and Suzi’s China Grill, with its three locations in Austin, rose above the rest in the A-List poll for Best Chinese, receiving 31 percent of the votes this week.

Suzi’s on South Lamar Boulevard has long been a Statesman newsroom favorite, especially those night-siders who crave a big Styrofoam container full of sesame chicken or basil shrimp ‘round the 8 o’clock hour when things really start to get busy. The Shoal Creek Boulevard and Bee Cave Road locations also serve sushi, which doesn’t exactly qualify as Chinese food, but I don’t hear any complaints. Y’all must be too busy chowing down.

Your A-List: Best Happy Hour

Picture 3.png
For decades, Trudy’s has been drawing in the masses with Tex-Mex, Mexican martinis and what y’all have voted as the A-List’s best happy hour in town, with 31 percent of the vote.

That might have something to do with the long afternoon-to-evening hours or maybe it’s the $.50 to $1 off drinks, including their famous margaritas and beer. (Happy hour varies from location to location. It is all day Monday and Tuesday through Friday 2-7 p.m. at the north location; Monday through Friday until 7 p.m. at the south location and 2-7 p.m. Monday through Friday at the original location near the University of Texas campus.)

Your A-List: Best Ice Cream

amy's.JPG
Can’t get enough of Amy’s Mexican vanilla? Or maybe you’re a fan of one of the beer or liquor varieties (Shiner was a flavor at the Burnet Road location this weekend). Whatever your flavor of love, Amy’s Ice Creams has once again won over Central Texans to earn the A-List title of Best Ice Cream with 75 percent of the votes.

With a dozen locations around Central Texas (as well as one in Houston and another in San Antonio), Amy’s Ice Creams has become an Austin institution in the 24 years since the first location opened on Guadalupe Street north of the University of Texas campus. The freshly made ice creams come in dozens of flavors, which many patrons enhance with mix-ins including candies, nuts, chocolates and cookies.

Starting this weekend at the Burnet Road, Mira Vista and The Wood locations, if you buy a pint of the limited edition Hill Country Crunch flavor (honey vanilla with pecans and chocolate chips), you’ll get a copy of the Hill Country Conservancy’s “Here Forever” album, which is a compilation of music by Texas musicians including Willie Nelson, Jerry Jeff Walker and Asleep at the Wheel to promote preserving the Hill Country.

Your A-List: Best Brunch

Trudy’s Texas Star, best known for Mexican martinis and Tex-Mex, has wooed Austinites with the best all around weekend breakfast, too, winning the A-List poll for Best Brunch with 29 percent.

Chilaquiles, migas, as well as pancakes, waffles, French toast, biscuits and gravy and omelettes greet diners on weekends from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the campus (409 W. 30th St.), south (901-C Little Texas Lane) and north (8820 Burnet Road) locations. Did I mention they serve mimosas, Bloody Marys and Greyhounds, too? The north location has a buffet-style brunch as well in case you want a little bit of everything.

Your A-List: Best Taco Stand

Torchy’s Tacos came on the Austin taco scene in 2006, and it quickly became the most talked about outdoor eatery in town. It wasn’t just the funky outdoor space on South First Street, which will only be the trailer’s home for a few more days before the taco truck moves two lots south. (There are other locations on Sixth Street and on Guadalupe near the UT campus.) The signature tacos, fresh salsas and to-die-for queso stood out from Day 1 and many taco fanatics haven’t looked back since.

The Torchy’s love helped launch it to the top of the Best Taco Stand poll, which it won with 66 percent of the votes. The green chili pork with poblano ranch sauce is the taco this foodie dreams about, and others rave about the baja shrimp, trailer park and fajita tacos. It’s not as cheap or traditional as some of its competitors, but the food is definitely awesome and just about as Austin as it gets.

Others receiving votes

  • Porfirio’s Tacos, 8 percent
  • Al Pastor, 6 percent
  • Chuco’s, 4 percent
  • Rosita’s, 4 percent
