Piglets in a blanket and more tiny foods to serve at New Year’s

I think having a cute little baby at home is starting to get to my head.

When I was planning the story for today’s paper about New Year’s Eve party foods, I thought I’d just pull together a few finger foods that people could munch on to counterbalance all that booze they’ll likely be drinking on Friday night.

It struck me that sliders and little smokies are not only shoo-ins for entertaining foods, they are also part of a larger trend of diminutive foods. In the past few years, I’ve been seeing more and more foods like miniature meatballs, single-size bags of popcorn and bite-sized cupcakes in grocery stores and restaurants.

Need more proof that mini is in? My mommy friend Paige threw a tiny party for her son’s second birthday. My neighbor Kym makes these adorable itsy bitsy food magnet sets. (Hopefully. she’ll be selling them soon on her Etsy site. You can e-mail her directly at kymical AT gmail DOT com.)

Martha Stewart and Family Fun are all over this tiny business. They’ve created recipes for mini caramel apples on a stick , Tom Thumb milkshakes and single-serving cakes.

Whatever you end up serving this New Year’s Eve, I hope you enjoy making it as much as you do eating it! My almost-4-year-old, Julian, was able to help me make the piglets in a blanket by cutting store-bought crescent rolls in half or in third and wrapping them around little smokies. An easy finger food that guests, no matter how refined their palate, will enjoy…
