Sunset Valley Farmers Market moving; SFC opening new market

Starting March 20, the Sunset Valley Farmers Market is moving to Barton Square Creek mall, and the Sustainable Food Center, which operates the downtown and Triangle farmers markets, will begin operating a new market in the parking lot of the Toney Burger Center in Sunset Valley.

The new market, called the SFC Farmers’ Market at Sunset Valley, will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will feature “a majority of the vendors from the previous Sunset Valley Farmers Market,” according to a press release on the Sustainable Food Center’s Web site.

“SFC has a temporary permit to run the market weekly, pending a review for a more permanent special use permit in April by the City of Sunset Valley. SFC’s intent is to run the market weekly, rain or shine, year-round,” the release states.

The Sunset Valley Farmers Market is now the Barton Creek Farmers Market, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the mall parking lot next to Dillard’s department store.

Last year, this market lost its lease with the Toney Burger Activity Center, which is owned by the Austin Independent School District, and was negotiating for a new home with the City of Sunset Valley.

Can someone do some real reporting on this as it seems to stink? The AISD doesn’t want to be part of the community and tosses out one market with a lame excuse. But that excuse just disappears when another bidder comes along? I don’t take either SFC or former operator’s sides, just wonder what are the facts here.

Excellent farmers, superb food vendors and lively artisans are going to stay to sell at Sunset Valley (as they have done for years) to form the new farmers’ market under SFC’s helm. Give them the show of support that you always have over the past several years if you’ve been a shopper of farmers’ produce, yummy foods, and a little art. The parking will still be very easy!

Sunset Valley Farmers Market has had 4 or 5 successful years at Burger Center and has grown beyond originally thought possible. As a member of the board of directors and representative of Gundermann Farms, owner of CAEDA Farms, decisions had to be made for the continued success of this established farmer’s market. Support for the move by the larger farm vendors, (Full Quiver Farm, Richardson Farms, Gundermann Farms, Hillside Farms, RR Honey) as well as a high percentage of other farm vendors, shows their support of current management and its vision for additional growth of this farmers’ market, now known as Barton Creek Farmers Market.

The facts are now clear from the comments above. AISD and the current farmers market management have ended their relationship, and AISD is working with the new management instead. Vendors therefore have a choice- those who support the current management vision will be in Barton Creek, and those who prefer to remain in Sunset Valley will work with the new management, Austin Sustainable Foods (which manages the other farmers markets in Austin already). It’s wonderful for Austin to have another market for customers to choose from- but we do hope nobody is under the mistaken impression that the Sunset Valley space has been vacated!

Regardless of what happened at SSVFM ending in the departure of old managment and the arrival of new, there is really good news. And that is: there are more markets to pick from and growth of open air markets will be better then ever. Make your choice Austin. Everyone wins.

Janet, The management may have changed, but the place remains the same. The SFC Farmers’ Market in Sunset Valley is still at the Toney Burger Center, at 3200 Jones Road in Sunset Valley. It’s just 200 feet east of where it used to be. Parking is ample (17 acres) right next to the market. 55 and growing in numbers of farmers and vendors, and work is beginning next week on improvements into the ‘park-like’ setting of the northwest corner of the market. www.austinfarmersmarket.org
