Photographer Annie Ray: What’s in Your Fridge Friday?

Since she started setting up photo booths at concerts, galas, bars and fundraiser events in 2007, Ray has photographed thousands of Austinites, but she wouldn’t keep getting asked to do high profile events if her photos didn’t capture the essence of Austin’s vibrant citizens. (She also posts all the photo booth pictures on her Web site, which makes for fun browsing even if you aren’t looking for a photo of yourself.)
What makes her photos stand out is that she’s not just pointing the camera at party guests and asking them to say “cheese.” Part of Ray’s talent is drawing people out of their shells with wacky requests (“Show me your tiger!”) or props like mustaches or even grapes. Ray also shoots for publications incluing Austin Monthly and Tribeza.
Her signature lighting and lens work means that people familiar with her photography probably could have identified her fridge as hers just by looking at the quality of the photo.
What three things are always in your fridge? Jalapeños, garlic and onions.
What’s your favorite condiment? HOT Chili Sauce
What’s your favorite food to photograph? Soups. Whenever I look at photos of soups in a cookbook or cooking magazine, I always get this overwhelming feeling of winter time, cozy blankets and giant soup mugs!!

I don’t know who posted that photo of “The World’s Greatest Key Lime Pie” from Kutchie’s Key West Kutcharitaville Cafe in Asheville. The background of the Smoky Mountains with that Key Lime Pie in the foreground was just exhilarating to say the least. I immediately Googled Kutchie Pelaez for his address so I could order a few of his awesome pies. To say a picture tells a 1000 words is just an understatement with Kutchie’s Key Lime Pie! We have never, ever eaten pie as good as Kutchie’s. Can’t wait till this summer when we plan a vacation so that we can go to Kutchie’s Island In-Person.

Hi Kimberly, I just read your review. Boy does that bring back fond memories. When we lived in NC., We would try and go to Kutcharitaville, at least once a week. Kutchie’s made the best cheese burgers in the world, better than anything we can find here in Calf. Kutchie’s key lime pies were our favorite too. Kutchie could have stayed in business with just his key lime pies alone. We sure would love to get some, yesterday wouldn’t be to soon. Oh, I think those awesome cheese burgers were called “Goody Goody’s”. We sure would love-it if someone would build a Kutcharitaville here on the west coast. That sure would be a big hit around here.
