Hailing from the Ozarks, Addie Broyles expanded her cooking (and eating) skills on the West Coast and Spain before settling in Austin, mainly for the aguas frescas at the taco stand down the street from her house where she, husband Ian and son Julian are now attempting to grow their own food in the backyard. They recently welcomed another baby boy and two chickens to the family.
Relishing food is about taking time to enjoy what has become the often hurried and mundane task of nourishing our bodies. Relish Austin is Addie's search for things that make her go "mmmm." High brow, low brow. Fast food, slow food. In Central Texas. On the Web. On the streets. In your garden and in your kids' lunch box. In your refrigerator and on your dinner table.
Relish Austin is also the name of Addie's print column that appears in the Austin American-Statesman a few times a month.

You know awareness about gluten allergies has hit mainstream when Betty Crocker launches a line of gluten-free dessert mixes.
Betty Crocker, one of General Mills most ubiquitous grocery store brands, now offers mixes ($4.49) for yellow cake, devil’s food cake, brownies and chocolate chip cookies that are all made in a gluten-free processing facility.
I haven’t had a chance to bake the brownie sample I got in the mail this week, but I’m going to bake them this week to see if my coworkers can tell what’s missing.

Yes, all the big manufacturers are getting in the game. Gluten free awareness is growing exponentially!
The CC cookies are great, and I will try the brownies next!

As co-author of The Gluten Connection (Rodale, 2007) and a gluten-sensitive person, I was excited to see the Betty Crocker lineup. But I was disappointed to find that the cakes are single-layer. The cost is high (about $5) for a box for a single-layer 9” cake! It’s not hard to bake from scratch. Hopefully as major manufacturers recognize the market for GF products, prices will come down.

Well, I wish I could say that the CC cookies were great. I appreciate Betty Crocker recognizing the need for affordable GF food but the cookies, though good right out of the oven, were not great once they were cool. Next on to the yellow cake.

I totally agree with Susan about the CC cookies- I expect a bit more than the typical grit and such for the price we’re paying. I did try the brownies and i have to say-Very GOOD!
