What do you eat when no one is looking?

cottagecheeseontoaset.jpg

For me, it’s cottage cheese, scooped directly from the container with saltine crackers.(Premium, please. No other brands need apply.)

In today’s food section, check out this article about Deborah Madison’s new book “What We Eat When We Eat Alone,” which examines what, why and how we eat when no one is looking.

Late at night, early in the morning, in the car on the way to work, we all have secret — or not-so-secret — eating habits. What do you eat when you’re by yourself?

A corn tortilla, charred on the stovetop, slathered with peanut butter and sprinkled with chocolate chips. Sometimes a whole banana is put in the center, and the whole thing is rolled up.

When no one is looking & I have the time, I’ll have a selection of blue cheese with sliced cold pears and a big glass of wine. That’s my highend snack. Lowbrow? Totino’s hamburger pizza with added oregano, basil and parmesan cheese. I know, it’s the redheaded stepchild of frozen pizzas but I grew up eating them.

Spinach omelet: saute fresh spinach, and if I have them on hand, chopped red pepper or green onion, an egg beaten with a little water, on a warm whole wheat tortilla with melted cheese, salsa and chopped avocado. Yummy, healthful, quick and really satisfying. A bigger eater could use two eggs.

OK, here goes—-I buy a small jar of pickled pigs’ feet, Mexican Style Velveeta Cheese, and tortilla chips. Alternate between bites of hot cheese dip and cool pigs’ feet for full effect.

I have been known to take a spoon and pile it with whipped cream from a spray can when the hubs isn’t looking.

Malt O Meal, sprinkled with sugar and spooned onto buttered toast. Also, avocados, halved and sprinkled with kosher salt. Scoop out with a spoon.

my cheapest, easiest “dessert” is metling a pat or two of butter in a glass in the mictrowave, then adding a teaspoon or two of brown sugar. Then I eat it with a spoon. I found this was delicious while making chocolate chip cookies. Butter and sugar!

A large spoonfull of peanut butter, with an equal amount of table sugar. Stir until well mixed and crumbly. Eat with a spoon, fork, fingers, whatever. Crunchy, salty, sweet, guilt-ridden deliciousness.
