Free dinner this week at Threadgill’s on N. Lamar

n1.jpg
No such thing as a free lunch? Well, no one ever said anything about dinner.

Threadgill’s owner Eddie Wilson caused quite a commotion this morning when on KGSR 107.1 he announced that all this week he would be giving away dinners at Threadgill’s - Old No. 1 on 6416 North Lamar Blvd. (Sorry, the free meal deal doesn’t apply to Threadgill’s World Headquarters on Riverside Drive.)

The north location was closed for more than three months recently for renovations, and to draw people back to that eatery, Wilson decided to give away selected dinners after 4 p.m. all this week. All you have to do is mention you heard about it on the radio or in INsite magazine and you can get a free chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken, fried catfish plate or a vegetable plate.

Just don’t forget to tip your servers.

In other chicken-fried steak news, the CFS from Leakey Feed Lot near Kerrville was just named in Bon Appetit magazine’s “United Plates of America” travel guide as one of the three things you must eat from Texas.

Easter is for camping — and eating outside

beautyofeatingoutdoors.jpg

Eating is one of my favorite parts about camping — I’ve blogged about Dutch oven cooking before — and this weekend’s outdoor adventure in Southern Oklahoma was no different. Every few months, we meet my parents halfway (they live in Missouri) for a weekend together, and we always spend about half our time cooking, eating or planning out our next meal.

Byron Bills of Salt Lake City pulled through for us again with recipes for Calico Chicken and Pineapple Upside Down Cake (never underestimate the power of name-brand plastic bags when cooking while camping). In boxed wine and water, I braised two lamb shanks from Loncito Cartwright after they marinated overnight (again, name-brand baggies, FTW).

(This photo of my family swarming the Dutch oven full of cheesy, chicken goodness reminds me of the seagull scene in “Finding Nemo”: “Mine! Mine! Mine! Mine!”)

Yesterday, a box of Cheez-Its, two dozen dyed eggs and six cups of yogurt later, we packed it up and headed our separate ways. We were happy to return to our lush paradise (just a few hours north of Dallas, the trees were hardly budding and jackets weren’t optional) but were already missing the smell of a one-pot wonder on top of a hot fire.
