Hailing from the Ozarks, Addie Broyles expanded her cooking (and eating) skills on the West Coast and Spain before settling in Austin, mainly for the aguas frescas at the taco stand down the street from her house where she, husband Ian and son Julian are now attempting to grow their own food in the backyard. They recently welcomed another baby boy and two chickens to the family.
Relishing food is about taking time to enjoy what has become the often hurried and mundane task of nourishing our bodies. Relish Austin is Addie's search for things that make her go "mmmm." High brow, low brow. Fast food, slow food. In Central Texas. On the Web. On the streets. In your garden and in your kids' lunch box. In your refrigerator and on your dinner table.
Relish Austin is also the name of Addie's print column that appears in the Austin American-Statesman a few times a month.
Unless otherwise noted, all photos are by Addie Broyles.
"Try some of Austin's best margaritas on our Gowalla trip. Just don't try them all in one day."

No such thing as a free lunch? Well, no one ever said anything about dinner.
Threadgill’s owner Eddie Wilson caused quite a commotion this morning when on KGSR 107.1 he announced that all this week he would be giving away dinners at Threadgill’s - Old No. 1 on 6416 North Lamar Blvd. (Sorry, the free meal deal doesn’t apply to Threadgill’s World Headquarters on Riverside Drive.)
The north location was closed for more than three months recently for renovations, and to draw people back to that eatery, Wilson decided to give away selected dinners after 4 p.m. all this week. All you have to do is mention you heard about it on the radio or in INsite magazine and you can get a free chicken-fried steak, chicken-fried chicken, fried catfish plate or a vegetable plate.
Just don’t forget to tip your servers.
In other chicken-fried steak news, the CFS from Leakey Feed Lot near Kerrville was just named in Bon Appetit magazine’s “United Plates of America” travel guide as one of the three things you must eat from Texas.

Is this true about dinner at Threadgills? Is there a catch. People in Austin love Threadgill’s. I just need to verify.

Can you imagine the commotion? I want to go see the Asylum Street Spankers on Friday night, but I’m sure the line will be around the corner and down the street!

No catch. Just show up after 4 p.m. and you can choose from one of the four dishes available for free.

It’s true! No catch! We went last night, waited a decent half hour at the bar and were seated. Don’t just remember to tip the waitstaff (who were super friendly and on their game in the middle of feeding-frenzy-shark-week), remember to tip them based on what the meal SHOULD cost! If you’re only charged for a few iced teas but ordering a whole meal, they’re still giving you full food service. :)

Tell some homeless/moneyless people about this! Bring ‘em in and pay for the tips and drinks. Awesome! By the way, AustinAngela: The Asylum Street Spankers show has been CANCELLED. Check Threadgill’s site.

Thank you April! Actually people should give at least 20% on the bill. I mean come on people support your waiters.

I went there early this evening after calling to verify wait times and they had signs up saying that the free dinner was canceled. They were giving out “rain checks” which was a slip you had to complete giving them your e-mail address and which entree you wanted.
