Garden update: Eating your own greens on St. Patty’s Day

greensevoo.jpg
Amid the craziness of SXSW, we celebrated St. Patrick’s Day (and a certain someone’s birthday) with a nice dinner, followed by a get-together in our backyard. Even though it was dark, we could see a lush bed of baby greens just begging to be picked and eaten. Out came the scissors, and within seconds, I had a big bowl of fresh, tender lettuce, cabbage and other assorted greens. Dipped in a little olive oil and salt, the mix of bright, bitter and spicy mesclun leaves was a perfect late-night St. Patty’s Day snack.

I’m really liking this cut-and-come-again method of eating lettuce from my raised beds. I’ve done several cuttings and, with the help of the glorious rain we received last week, the leaves keep growing back.

This rain convinced me that the plants know the difference between hose water and water falling from the sky. As you can see in the collage below, everything shot up a few inches during and just after the rain, including zucchini and green bean seeds I planted just a little more than a week ago.

Thanks for the graffiti artist who created this work on South First. No better word to describe our fair city.
