Best local food blogs

windowsfood.jpg
A few people on Twitter were asking me for a list of my favorite local (Austin and the rest of Central Texas) food blogs. So I thought I’d compile my list here and ask readers for suggestions.
There are tons of local food blogs out there that have gone dead in the past year. Besides making me sad to lose the stream of brilliant content, it also means I can’t include them on this list.

So, here are Austin area food blogs on my radar.

Texas Locavore — Freelance writer Beth Goulart writes about “eating local in the Lone Star state.”

Taco Town — “A product of a couple of gringos who eat Mexican food every day, every meal.”

Tipsy Texan — In-depth cocktail/mixology blog that features recipes and information on seasonal cocktails.

Tomorrow Friendly Food — Vegan recipes, tips and restaurants. (They do weekly vegan potlucks.)

The Retta Show — The adventures of a six-year-old chef.

Thai Cooking with Jam — Asian, local foods, plus tons of recipes and beautiful photos.

Taco Journalism — “In search of tacos y mas in Austin, Texas. “

I Love Beer — A must for beer connoisseurs.

Eat My Words — Texas Monthly food editor Pat Sharpe keeps it short and sweet.

Dining in Austin — Two women review local restaurants.

Red White and Grew — Information on Victory Gardens, as well as recipes and details on local produce.

Austin Farm to Table — “A celebration and exploration of Austin farmers markets, fresh produce and locally-made products.”

Please leave a comment, @broylesa me on Twitter or send me an e-mail with your food blog or your favorite local food blogs! I’ll continue to update this list as I find new ones.

Note: I use Google Reader as an RSS feed to track these blogs. Several local blogs, including Dining Out with Rob Balon and BrewHound, which is written by a producer at Fox 7, don’t allow RSS feeds, which severely limits (hint, hint, Internet folks in charge of those blogs) how often I read them.

Another note: I regularly share items from the 200+ food blogs I subscribe to. You can see these shared items at http://tinyurl.com/6n4lhj.

The Retta Show’s founding blog (www.rettacliff.blogspot.com), while not a food blog itself, often has some of my favorite articles on local food happenings.

www.maggiesaustin.com is a great blog that has covered a number of restaurants in the Austin area.

I also use Google Reader to keep track of all my craft blogs and share items (I once wrote a post about “How I love my Google Reader”) and I agree 100% on the frustration at finding a good “blog” or site that doesn’t have an RSS feed. Argh!

Thai Cooking with Jam is awesome - she’s a friend, and an amazing cook. I can’t wait for her place to open.

I also enjoy reading Cookie Madness, written by Anna Ginsberg who won the Pillsbury Bakeoff a few years ago.

And, though I don’t see that they have a blog just yet, another great one is the site for Edible Austin.

Great list! Thank you! :)

Great suggestions! That Retta; she’s so cute! I love that Maggie’s Austin isn’t just food, and I’d forgotten that Thai Cooking with Jam has ties that a new restaurant on West Mary Street. Anna Ginsberg used to blog a lot, but I haven’t come across anything lately.

Agreed! Edible Austin needs a blog! :)

You should definitely include Anna Ginsberg’s cookiemadness.net on your list - a new recipe every day! I also have a food blog about healthy gluten free vegan cooking. I’m at eatnvegn.blogspot.com. I saw you on the access channel cooking show with Arcie and Shasta. You are doing a fantastic job.

Hallelujah! Cookie Madness! Aren’t we lucky to call her a fellow Austinite?

Thanks for your site, aTxVegan! I’d like to do some more vegan for the masses stuff sometime soon. Nonvegans always complain that it’s not very good, but I’ve had some most memorable vegan meals!

(And thanks for the compliment! I do love those Cola Sisters.)

One I’ve been enjoying reading this summer is Austin Agrodolce: http://austinagrodolce.blogspot.com/

We both were on the Tecolote CSA and blogged about what we did with our veggies, but she did it in a much more thought out, far less snarky way than we did.

Thanks for the blog suggestion, Jenny! Austin Agrodolce had a really interesting post about how copyright applies to Internet recipes. Something quite applicable to my life right now!

I can’t wait to find your blog on Tecolote. I’ve been thinking about joining a CSA myself…
