It’s shaping up to be a busy week, fitness friends. Here are some highlights:
- Share the Love Fundraiser — Have you dreamed of a date with 2011 Austin Marathon winner and professional triathlete Desiree Ficker? Check out the Share the Love fund-raiser sponsored by Mauro Pilates, at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2 at Bar 96 on Rainey Street. Admission is $20 and includes food from Carmelo’s Italian Restaurant, music and a silent auction featuring University of Texas basketball tickets, spa gift certificates, art and that date with Des. Proceeds benefit the Texas Advocacy Project, a non-profit organization that provides free legal assistance to victims of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault. For more information go here.
- Color Run — Is your life too black and white? Color it up at the Color Run ATX, scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday at Mueller Beach Park. Participants will line up at the start wearing fresh white T-shirts. They’ll dash through “color zones,” where volunteers will slosh them with non-toxic colored powder, also known as elf pixie dust. A post-5K party, featuring more color, live music and local vendors, will follow. Proceeds benefit Habitat for Humanity. For more information, go here.
- Canine Center for Training and Behavior Open House — Is your dog a natural athlete? Ever wanted to do yoga with your pooch? Drop by the Saturday open house from 1-6 p.m. Saturday at The Canine Center for Training and Behavior, 6901 Old Bee Caves Road. Admission is $5 and includes food, drink, two raffle tickets, facility tours, a little dog yoga, Canine Good Citizen testing, agility training, air scenting and canine massage. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome. Proceeds benefit Austin Pets Alive. For more information go here.
- Run for the Green 5K — Save Muny presents a 5K competitive run through Lions Municipal Golf Course, 2901 Enfield Road, at 8 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 5. Runners will weave through the course’s oak trees, down fairways and around the course’s water features, greens and bunkers. Ben Crenshaw will serve as the official race starter. Entry fee is $20 for adults and $10 for children 12 and younger. (A fun run is also planned.) The University of Texas, which owns the property, is considering closing the course in 2019 and replacing it with retail and apartment development. Proceeds will benefit the effort to stop the closure. Register here.

FrankenBike is taking over the world! (Plus canoe races and swim clinics)

Six thousand runners, including me, have registered for Sunday’s 3M Half Marathon & Marathon Relay on Sunday, but three other cool outdoorsy events are planned for this weekend.
Prefer biking?
Check out the FrankenBabe and FrankenBike event from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at The Parlor, 4301 Guadalupe Street. The event, created by Michelle Moore as a tribute to the lovely ladies of the Austin cycling scene (hey, that includes me!), includes free tune-ups for women, a “drag race” and live music by The Dela Rosas, Sailor’s Wife, Jason Ramsey, IPD and The Lucas Cook Band. For more information go here.
FrankenBike, by the way, is taking over the world. Or at least the state. The monthly free bike swap meets have spread to San Antonio, Corpus Christi, College Station, Houston and more. They’ve even picked up a sponsor — Independence Brewery!
Prefer paddling?
The Texas Winter 100K (also known as TWO), pushes off from the banks of Lady Bird Lake, underneath the Interstate 35 bridge, early Saturday morning and finishes at Fisherman’s Park in Bastrop that evening.
Packet pickup and gear check is from 3-8 p.m. Friday at the Holiday Inn Town Lake. A mandatory pre-race briefing is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday at the hotel. Races begin at 5 a.m. and 8 a.m. Saturday, with an awards ceremony planned for 7 p.m. Saturday at Fisherman’s Park. For more information go here.
Prefer swimming?
Colin’s Hope is hosting a swim clinic from 1-5 p.m. Saturday at Nitro Swimming, 15506 West Highway 71 in Bee Cave. Olympic athletes Brendan Hansen, Kathleen Hersey and Garrett Weber-Gale will provide instruction and share their stories. The clinic is designed for children ages 7 and up. Cost is $35. Proceeds benefit Colin’s Hope, which works to prevent drownings. For more information go here.

Traveling this Thanksgiving? Try a virtual turkey trot!
What’s your plan for offsetting the Thanksgiving meal?
Folks who answered a poll on the Fit City fan page on Facebook are doing everything from joining CrossFit Central’s annual Fun Run 5K to riding a mountain bike as far away from the pie table as they can. (Good plan, Bill Simons!) One lucky reader is swimming in the ocean near La Jolla, Calif.
If you live in Austin, consider running in the Thundercloud Subs Turkey Trot, a 5-mile race in downtown Austin.
But what if you’ll be traveling this week? No problem!
Texas Mountain Trail, which promotes travel in Far West Texas, is encouraging people to run, hike, bike or do anything active to burn off those extra calories through a Virtual Turkey Trot. Any activity done between Nov. 20-27 counts, and it doesn’t matter where you are.
Participants fill in information about what they did and where they did it. Afterward, organizers will pick the fastest, longest, closest and furthest away adventures for prizes that include regional travel guides, trail maps, discounts and freebies for fun in West Texas. Folks who send in photos of their own personal turkey trots qualify for additional prizes.
What do you plan to do to make up for Thursday’s feasting?

Cave, bike and run?
Participants in the Nov. 20 Natural Bridge Caverns Duathlon will charge out of a cavern on foot, hop on their bicycles and finish with another run.
Four distances of the race are on the schedule:
- Cave Bear — 2 mile run/15.5 mile bike/2 mile run

All four versions will start 180 feet — or the equivalent of about 18 stories — below ground.
The runs will be on closed-course caliche roads. All bike routes except the Sabertooth will be on asphalt country roads. The Sabertooth will follow off-road Jeep trails and single track.
Registration is $70 for the Cave Bear and Sabertooth or $80 for the Wooly Mammoth and T-Rex (plus $10 on race day); $160 for two-person relay ($180 on race day); and $215 for the three-person relay ($235 on race day).

Here are details of some of the best events:
- The SUP Games — Stand-up paddlers will take to Quarry Lake from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, battling it out in events including a slalom buoy course, jousting, an obstacle course and a “water war.” Also on tap? A Dash for Cash, costume contest, SUP demos and an attempt to break the world record for cramming as many people as possible onto one gigantic SUP board named SUPzilla (the record is 31). Halloween BOOcamps planned

It’s almost Halloween, so trainer Cody Butler is trading kettlebells and free weights for pumpkins at his BOOcamps.
Think pumpkin-centric core work, squats, pushups and planks.
Butler, 31, owner of H.E.A.T. Bootcamps and Personal Training, has been experimenting with spooky bootcamps for five years.
“We always did some sort of funny obstacle course, and one of the stations used pumpkins for workouts. It was everyone’s favorite part and we decided once we built our studio that BOOcamp would revolve entirely around using pumpkins,” he says.
Participants can pick from an array of pumpkins for their workouts. You can grab a 2- or 3-pounder or a 15-pounder, depending on how challenging of a workout you want.
“Anything you’d do with a stability ball, we can do with pumpkins,” Butler says. “We can hit every single muscle in the body, and it’s all modifiable. You can take the pumpkin out of it or change the weight if you need to. It’s all about creating a workout that has a fun environment around it.”
The studio will be decked out as a haunted house, too, with spooky music piped in. Costumes are encouraged, and a costume contest is planned. Prizes include free bootcamp sessions.
BOOcamp is open to the public. Cost is $15 per session.
They’re scheduled for 5:45 and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 27, 5:45 and 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28 and 9 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29 at the RunTex Warehouse on South First Street at Riverside Drive. A special Halloween-themed Zumba session is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 29. (“You will be dancing with a pumpkin,” Butler notes.)
And beware.
“There have been broken pumpkins,” Butler says. “You never know what’s going to happen.”

Women's Race will benefit Tuesday's Children

An adventure race scheduled for Sunday will benefit Tuesday’s Children, a non-profit organization that helps families and children who lost a loved one in the terrorist attacks 10 years ago.

Terra Firma Racing’s annual Women’s Race is scheduled for Sept. 11. Two-person teams will run, walk and splash their way through the course at the Cedar Park YMCA.
It sounds pretty beginner friendly — organizers say it will take competitors about an hour to finish — and includes a costume contest and best watercraft contest.
Registration is $150 for a two-person team here.
Late registration will also be available at 7 a.m. the day of the race.
A costume parade is scheduled for 8 a.m., followed by a pre-race meeting at 8:30 a.m. and the official start at 9 a.m.
The Cedar Park YMCA is located at 204 E. Little Elm Trail in Cedar Park.

Free wellness fair Thursday at El Centro de Familia
Need a basic health screening?
For the first time this year, Southwest Key Programs, which has moved its headquarters to East Austin, is opening up its employee wellness fair to the community.
That means the public can drop by for vision, blood pressure and glucose screenings, plus pick up information about local fitness clubs and insurance and benefits companies.
All that sounds good and healthy, but I’m particularly excited about seeing the Southwest Key’s new El Centro de Familia building, which has a slide connecting the third to the second floor. How cool is that?
Southwest Key Programs is a national non-profit that operates education programs for children in the juvenile justice system, safe shelters for immigrant children, job training opportunities, cultural arts programs and community building. For more information go here.
The wellness fair is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25 at the company’s Centro de Familia headquarters at 6002 Jain Lane.
Representatives of H.E.B., Live Tobacco Free Austin, the American Diabetes Association, Texas Medclinic, Austin Family Dentist, Seton Diabetes Education Center and Wal-Mart will be on hand.

A peek at renovated Northwest Recreation Center
I got a peek at the freshly remodeled Northwest Recreation Center over the weekend.
I’m lucky. I live just down the street from the center at 2913 Northland Drive, which has been undergoing renovations for more than a year.
When I stopped just after Saturday’s ribbon cutting ceremony, a Jazzercize group was exercising in one room, someone was practicing tai chi in another, and teen-agers were playing games in the lobby.
While the center has opened for children’s summer camps, the facility is not completely finished.
The gymnasium needs minor renovations, including new glass backboards, a new volleyball setup and a new curtain divider, and the facility won’t fully open until that work is complete later this year.
The new facility is bigger than the old one. It includes two classrooms, two multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen, a fitness room, a lobby and a gymnasium. For more information, call the center at 512 974-6972.
The center will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.
City officials say the building was designed as a “green” facility. According to a press release, water is funneled from the roof into a series of canals surrounding the building. From there the water is funneled into rain gardens.
If it rains hard, the water flows onto the adjacent soccer field, where several areas of porous soil will help trap the water before it flows into Shoal Creek.
The landscaping surrounding the facility is drought tolerant and requires little maintenance.

Your weekend fitness events!
Once again, Austin’s got lots on the fitness calendar in the next few weeks.
This week, guest blogger Colin Moss helped me pick out the best of the best.
Moss, who writes a blog at http://colintri.blogspot.com/, dragged me through a 7-mile run around Lady Bird Lake last weekend. We both got dragged by his dog Oskar, who only leads and never follows.

Upcoming fitness events!

I can hardly keep track of all the fitness events this time of year.
This weekend, I’ll be running the Zooma Half Marathon out at the Hyatt Lost Pines near Bastrop for the third year in a row. The course is packed with killer hills. Thank goodness for that little front that blew in last night, clearing out some of the humidity and dropping temperatures just enough to make a 13.1-mile run enjoyable. For more info on Zooma, go here.
It’s also BP MS150 weekend, so thousands of cyclists will be pedaling 180 miles from Houston to Austin over two days, raising money for multiple sclerosis along the way. It’s another amazing event. And it’s fun to watch the Houston cyclists, used to riding the flat coastal plains, fall apart on the hills around Austin. For updates, go here. Good luck everyone!
Here’s some of the best of everything else that’s going on around Austin in the next few weeks. Get out there and enjoy!

Banff Film Festival at Paramount April 2-3

Mainstream film festivals attract celebrities in long gowns and jewels. The Banff Mountain Film Festival draws folks decked out in zip-off pants and hiking boots.
That’s a good thing.
I make it a point to attend the festival every year. Not only do I get to see some of the coolest films (think biking across Mongolia, kayaking in Africa, climbing in Yosemite), I get to mingle with Austin’s outdoorsy set. Usually I get a free pair of socks, too, given away at one of a dozen or so tables set up by businesses that cater to nature lovers and active types.
We’re lucky we get to see the festival in Austin.
It features award-winning selections picked from the roughly 260 films entered into an annual film festival in Banff, Canada. All of them have something to do with the mountains, whether it be paddling through them, climbing them, biking up and down them or creatures that live in them.
The film festival stops in about 350 cities around the globe.
This year’s tour comes to the Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress Ave., this Saturday and Sunday. It features two collections of action, environmental and adventure mountain films — Radical Reels at 8 p.m. Saturday and the 2011 World Tour (my fave!) at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Tickets are $18 per night and available at Whole Earth stores, the Paramount box office, www.austintheatre.org or by calling 474-1221. For more information go here.

- Round Rock Express Ride — Jack & Adam’s Bicycles and High Five Events will present the inaugural Round Rock Express Ride on April 10. Bicyclists can choose from a 27 or 77-mile course through the rolling countryside around the Dell Diamond. Registration ranges from $37 to $55, depending on when you register and if you want to attend the Round Rock Express baseball game. A portion of proceeds will benefit Please Be Kind to Cyclists, which works to increase harmony between motorists and bicyclists on Central Texas roadways. For more information go here.
The above entry reflects a correction. The diving clinic at West Austin Athletic Club is from 4:30 to 6 p.m. March 22 and 24.

Exercise flash mob to benefit Japan
The owner of an Austin exercise bootcamp is planning a calorie-burning “flashmob” that will pay tribute to Japan in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami disasters.
The public is invited to the 15-minute exercise session at 8:30 p.m. Thursday on the patio of the Long Center, 701 W. Riverside Dr.
For a donation of $10 to the American Red Cross, participants will get a glow bracelet and glow stick to use in the flashmob.
The patio will be dark when participants arrive. They’ll put on the colored bracelets, and start by exercising to high-energy music, led by HEAT Bootcamp owner Cody Butler. At the 10-minute mark, the music will change and the group will shift to yoga. For the last few minutes, participants will fold to the ground and exchange their bracelets for larger glow sticks. Those with red sticks will move to a center circle and those with white glowsticks will fall back, creating a glowing image of a Japanese flag.
For more information, go to HEAT Bootcamp’s website here.

Take the Navy SEAL Challenge
Ever wonder if you could be a U.S. Navy SEAL?
You can find out by taking the U.S. Navy SEAL Fitness Challenge at noon Sunday at the East Communities YMCA, 5315 Ed Bluestein Blvd.
It doesn’t look easy.
To qualify, you have to swim 500 yards of side stroke or breast stroke in under 12 and a half minutes without resting; do at least 42 push-ups in 2 minutes; at least 50 sit-ups in 2 minutes; at least six pull-ups in as long as it takes; and run 1.5 miles in 11 minutes or less. And those are just the minimum requirements. Optimally, you’d do more of all those things, and you’d do them faster.
Just a glimpse at those requirements made my gut ache. Then I wanted to relax on the couch. Still, it made me appreciate the folks who serve a SEALs a little bit more.
Anyone age 12 or older can sign up to take the challenge. It’s free to the public.
Officials say the test closely mirrors the initial physical screening given to SEALs applicants. To reserve a time slot, go here.

The American Cancer Society needs volunteers — especially physically active ones — to participate in a new cancer prevention study.
Enrollment will take place March 1-5 at the American Cancer Society Corporate Office, 2433 Ridgepoint Drive, Suite A, and the American Cancer Society National Cancer Information Center, 11701 Stonehollow Drive.
Nationally, the American Cancer Society wants to enroll 500,000 participants in the Cancer Prevention Study 3, which is designed to help researchers better understand the factors that cause or prevent cancer. In Austin, 1,000 participants are needed.
Participants must be adults ages 30 to 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer and are willing to participate in a long-term study.
They’ll have to provide a small blood sample and measurements and complete a detailed health/family history survey. Surveys are sent to participants every 2 to 3 years to update their health status and activities.
The study will be the third long term study the agency has conducted since the 1950s. Earlier studies helped link smoking and second hand smoke directly to cancer deaths. Nutrition and exercise have also been studied, but not to the extent that this study will.
For more information on the study go here. To schedule an appointment go here or call 1-888-604-5888.

For a Wild West adventure (race), try Muddy Outlaw

If you haven’t noticed, a parade of extreme events, each one more brutal than the last, has been making its way through Central Texas.
Contestants run or bike through a course, tackling obstacles along the way. They might slog through muddy water, scramble under wires crackling with electricity or run through 4-foot flames.
Think the Tough Mudder or the Warrior Dash.
They’re big events, staged by outside companies that drop into Austin, put on an event, then move to the next city.
That’s got one local company that puts on adventure-style races thinking about what it can do to stand apart.
Too Cool Racing, run by partners Robyn Cantor and Art Cook, focuses on events held in Central Texas. Entries are capped at 2,000 people and feature Texas products and Texas food.
Their next event, the Muddy Outlaw Dash and Muddy Outlaw Chainring Challenge, comes with a Wild West theme.
Competitors will either ride a mountain bike on a 7-mile course or run a 5K course loaded with obstacles. There’s a haybale hill to climb, a creek to cross, a barn crisscrossed with climbing ropes to navigate, whiskey barrels to dodge and 6-foot fences to scale.
At the end, racers get to drink Texas beer and eat Texas barbecue. Yeehaw!
The overall first place finisher gets a custom belt buckle (of course!), and all finishers get a custom Muddy Outlaw sheriff’s badge.
The March 5 event will take place at the faux Western town at Flat Creek Ranch near Johnson City.
Entry fee is $60 (or $90 for both). The running version starts at 10 a.m. The biking version starts at 1 p.m. To register, go here.
Additional Muddy Outlaw races are scheduled for May 29 at Camp Eagle and Oct. 1 at the Travis County Expo Center.

Tough Mudder registration closes Saturday

Does jumping into a pond filled with ice and muddy water fill you with glee? Does scrambling under 400 wires crackling with electric current make your pulse race?
If these fun-filled activities sound like bliss to you, it’s time to take quick action.
Registration closes Saturday for the Tough Mudder, billed as “the toughest one-day event on the planet.”
The event is scheduled for Jan. 29 at a motocross course near Giddings. It’s not a race; participants aren’t timed and there’s no award for crossing the finish line first.
However, it’s a major accomplishment just to survive the thing.
The course consists of 17 obstacles on a 10-mile course near Giddings. (Sadly, a burn ban has forced organizers to drop the run through 4-foot flames.)
Organizers seem proud that more than one in five people who enter the race drop out before the finish line.
Triathlons? Those are just boring by comparison, says Will Dean, a 30-year-old Brit who worked in counter terrorism in the UK and dreamed up the event.
“People who want to wax their legs and practice changing socks quickly are just not going to enjoy this,” Dean says.
At the end, finishers get an orange headband, a beer and, if they want it, a free (permanent) tattoo.
Registration $160 for the Saturday event, and $140 for the Sunday event. (Shocking but true: People actually pay to do this stuff!)
The event raises money for the Wounded Warrior Project. For more information or to register, go here.

Volunteers needed for National Public Lands Day on Saturday
Trail users, your muscles are needed!
The Austin Parks Foundation, Hill Country Conservancy and REI are trying to round up a record number of volunteers to work on trails that crisscross the Barton Creek Greenbelt this Saturday, National Public Lands Day.
If you go, you get free breakfast tacos, coffee and juice in the morning, plus a cool free T-shirt and a picnic lunch when the work is done.
Volunteer registration begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trailhead in Zilker Park.
At 9 a.m., U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) will announce more federal funding for the “Walk For a Day” trail, which will run 34 miles from Zilker Park to city-owned lands west of Kyle. It’s the second round of funding for the ambitious project, which last year received $300,000 in federal money.
Trail work begins at 9:30 a.m. With the recent storms, volunteers will have plenty of work to do. Besides invasive species removal, they’ll be doing trail maintenance and cleaning up debris.
A volunteer appreciation picnic starts at 12:30 p.m. at the Rock Garden, just up the hill from the Zilker Hillside Theater.
“We have 269 people signed up, but I could use about 118 more helping us battle invasive species along the Barton Creek Greenbelt, starting at the Zilker access,” says Charlie McCabe, executive director of the Austin Parks Foundation.
If you plan to volunteer, wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Bring a water bottle and hat.
Sign up here.

Help clean Lady Bird Lake today

I snapped the above photo while pedaling in to work this morning. City crews were mucking debris out of Shoal Creek, just as it enters Lady Bird Lake.
If you’ve seen the lake lately, you know it’s still clogged with branches, trash and related crud that got washed there after the remnants of Tropical Storm Hermine blew through last week.
Today you can help clean up the mess.
The Hill Country Conservancy’s young professionals group, EPIC, is teaming up with The Expedition School and Keep Austin Beautiful for a lake cleanup today.
Meet at The Camacho Recreation Center, 34 Robert T. Martinez Jr. St., between 4:30 and 7 p.m. Bring closed-toed shoes and a long sleeve shirt. Water and bug spray will be provided.
Volunteers can sign up here.
Afterward, Iron Gate, Guero’s Taco Bar and Deep Eddy Sweet Tea Vodka will provide tacos, drinks and live music. Festivities start at about 7:15 p.m. at Iron Gate, 1111 East 6th St.

Jam skater Brandon Perea at Playland tonight, Saturday

Here’s an idea in case this journalism thing doesn’t work out … I’ll become a professional jam skater, like 15-year-old Brandon Perea.
I just met Brandon at the coffee shop across the street. He doesn’t drink coffee (too young?), but we chatted for a while about his career as a touring skater who mashes up hip hop dance and disco rollerskating in front of crowds of screaming teen-age girls.
It’s fascinating stuff, really.
After 45 minutes of conversation about how he got into the sport (he laced up his first pair of skates at 3 months) and his dating status (he’s single, girls), we stepped outside on the patio for a little demo.
Wow.
The dude can move.
When he’s not rollerskating on his quad skates to music by Black Eyed Peas and Ne-Yo, he’s spinning around a track on his BMX bike. That bike scrape on his elbow? A cycling injury, not from skating.
Get an in-person glimpse of Brandon doing head spins and back flips on rollerskates today and tomorrow at Playland Skate Center, 8822 McCann Dr.
He’ll be teaching jam skate lessons, signing autographs and performing from 11 p.m. to midnight. Admission is $5.

Football 101 for Women

I’ve been looking forward to advent of football season since Feb. 8, the day after the New Orleans Saints won the Super Bowl. (Yahoo!)
Apparently, not everyone cares as much I do about the game. Maybe it’s because they don’t understand it, and nobody’s ever taken the time to (nicely) explain it to them.
This Sunday, 1379 Family Sports Shop will do just that. The store is hosting a “Football 101: Intro to Football for Women” from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 15 at the West Austin Youth Association, 1314 Exposition Blvd.
Two former NFL players — Mike Rosenthal, who played with the New York Giants and Minnesota Vikings, and Cody Carlson, who played with the Houston Oilers — along with two other elite local players — Randall Schultz, who played at Rice University, and Mark Mangum, who played for University of Wisconsin and now directs Westlake Pop Warner — will lead the clinic.
Participants will learn about player positions and functions, general rules and regulations, and the basics of football strategy.
Registration is $25 and includes a playbook to take home, pretzels and beer.
The event is a fund-raiser for Gridiron Heroes Spinal Cord Injury Foundation, which provides resources and support to athletes who have sustained spinal cord injuries.
Register at 1379 Sports Shop or online.

Celebrate the Journey with me Thursday
Have you read Elizabeth Gilbert’s book “Eat, Pray, Love”?
Besides making me fantasize about sneaking off to Italy to sample the best pizza in the world, the book reminded me of the importance of savoring every day of our life.

On Thursday, I’ll be at the Spring Condominiums, 300 Bowie St., along with Austin American-Statesman food writer Addie Broyles and Mama Drama blogger Tara Trower to share some tips on living well.
The “Celebrate the Journey” event honors Friday’s opening of the movie version of Gilbert’s book, starring Julia Roberts.
Besides Italian, Indian and Indonesian cuisine, you’ll have a chance to win door prizes and gifts. An on-site book sale featuring Gilbert’s books and other like-minded works will benefit the Texas Book Festival.
The event — which runs from 6-8 p.m. — is free, but an RSVP is required. Go here.

Fitness fairs this weekend

We’ve got two big fitness fairs on tap this weekend — one at the Toney Burger Center, and another at the Texas School for the Deaf.
Obesity and diabetes rates are especially high in the Hispanic community. With that in mind, an Austin organization is planning a Fitness Feria to help Spanish-speaking families learn how to get their children involved in sports programs.
The event, which is free and open to the public, is scheduled for 8 a.m. until noon Saturday at the Toney Burger Center, 3200 Jones Road, and specifically targets a Spanish speaking audience.
“It’s not because parents don’t care about them, but because they are largely uniformed about what to do to help their kids,” says organizer OnĂŠ Musel-Gilley.
Families will follow an “Olympic pathway” that leads them through hands-on sports demonstrations and exhibits that explain what it takes to get involved in local sports programs. Parents can learn about free sports camps, training and fitness activities, how to get athletic mentors and scholarships, and the importance of practice, mental discipline, and healthy lifestyles. Volleyball, cycling, running, baseball, swimming, cheerleading, golf, football, karate and soccer all will be represented.
For more information go to www.FitnessFeria.com.
Another free and open to the public health and fitness fair is planned for the same day at the Texas School for the Deaf.
The 2010 National Health & Fitness Expo is scheduled for 8 a.m. until 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. Saturday in the auditorium at the school, 1102 S. Congress Ave. Donations for the School for the Deaf Foundation will be accepted.
Visitors can get free samples, free demonstrations, discounts and glimpses of the newest products.
Vendors include House of Pain, Tan It All, Naturally Fit, Max Muscle, Fitness Training Studios, Egg White International, Swoll-up.com, Tap Out Nutrition, BSN, M Fit Foods, Smoothie Factory, Champion Nutrition, Elegance N Grace, Family Health Chiropractic, Minuteman Press, Animal World & Snake Farm, Johnson Diversity, Fitness N Motion and Natural Fitness Productions.

Girls only dance party
Want to boogie but hate the club scene?
An Austin studio is now hosting a chapter of the female-only phenomenon known as Dance Dance Party Party.
Dance Dance Party Party was started in New York in 2006 by two friends loved dancing but hated cover charges, getting hit on and smelling like alcohol and cigarettes.
According to a press release that landed on my desk, it’s an hour-long session of tunes played in a dance studio with the lights turned low. The only rules? No boys, no booze and no judgement.
Participants can sign up to “Guest DJ” by creating their own playlist.
In Austin, the party starts at 7 p.m. every Sunday at NiaSpace, 3212 S. Congress Ave.

Look for me in The Nutcracker!

Guess what? I just found out that I get the one-night role of Mother Ginger in Ballet Austin’s upcoming production of The Nutcracker.
Yahoo!
I get to climb into the enormous, well-endowed costume of Ma Ginger and get rolled onstage for the evening performance on Friday, Dec. 18 at the Long Center. For 3 minutes I hang out in the costume while 16 children (!) run out from under the skirt and do a dance number.
No talent required, thank goodness!
Come watch me… For more information go to www.balletaustin.org.
(The photo above, from Ballet Austin, shows Mother Ginger during a performance last year. Quite a get-up, isn’t it?)

Trial run at the Oyster Race
I spent a couple of hours downtown Sunday morning, scavenging for coffee beans, tracking down a police officer and snagging a coaster from a bar on Sixth Street.
Rough night on the town, you ask? Nah. I was taking part in a tune-up for the upcoming Oyster, an urban adventure race scheduled for Oct. 11 here in Austin.
The race, a sort of cross between a triathlon and a scavenger hunt, involves running, biking and taking public transportation around town, and doing wacky tasks at check points.
The attached photos show scenes from last year’s race.
My team of three (me, husband Chris and neighbor Chris Bell) found ourselves collecting trash from the shores of Lady Bird Lake, working a sudoku puzzle and photographing a woman in Longhorn garb during Sunday’s trial run. It took about an hour and a half. The real race will take four to six hours, and teams will cover 30 or 40 miles.
Registration is $75 per person for the full race (less for the shorter Half Oyster), and each team must also raise $100 in pledges. (Teams of three or relay teams of four to six racers are allowed.) Proceeds benefit the non-profit Austin Parks Foundation, which works with the Austin Parks Department and volunteer groups to maintain area parks.
To register for the race, part of the Merrell Oyster Racing Series, go here.
The race starts at 8 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 11. Team check-in is 1-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 10 at RunTex Riverside, 422 W. Riverside.
According to organizers, the race could include anything from canoeing, eating, climbing, rafting, kayaking, trivia, golfing and bowling to whatever else they dream up. I predict a stop at the giant pile of dirt on Auditorium Shores that represents the amount of dog poop generated each day in our city. Expect to get wet, too.
It’s going to be fun, fun, fun!

Texas Round-Up
If you’re running the Texas Round-Up 10K this weekend, you’ll be running a new route that takes you by a slew of Austin icons, from the State Capitol and Bob Bullock Museum to Memorial Stadium, the Drag, the Santa Rita No. 1 oil rig and the Texas State Cemetery.
Wooo hooo! It’s always fun to run new routes, and with this one you’ll be so distracted by the tourist sites you’ll forget you’re getting in a good workout.
“It’s a one-stop shop for a slice of Austin history. And it’s got a ton of nice downhill running, which isn’t easy to find downtown,” says race director John Conley.
The races start at 8 a.m. Saturday, April 25 across from the Bob Bullock Museum, 18th Street and Congress Avenue. Besides the races, a fitness festival and FitKids FunZone are planned from 8 a.m. until noon. A family mile run/walk begins at 10 a.m.
Online registration for the footrace is closed, but you can register in person at the fitness expo from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Friday, April 24 at the Austin Convention Center, 500 E. Cesar Chavez St. Cost is $30 for the untimed 10K, $35 for the chip-timed 10K, $25 for the untimed 5K or $30 for the chip-timed 5K. The family mile is $10 per person. You can also register from 6 to 7:30 a.m. on race day morning near the starting line.
It’s all aimed at helping improve the health of all Texans. Interactive booths, face painting, healthy food and drink and health screenings are planned. Other than the races, iI’s free and open to the public.
For more information go to www.texasroundup.org.
Each year, Gov. Rick Perry names a Fit Texan winner. This year, it’s Denny Martin, who’s been obese since he was 10 years old. Martin weighed almost 400 pounds in October 2007. He’s since dropped 153 pounds (and aims to lose another 40) and plans to run the 10K.
Congrats Denny!

Do the Mighty Texas Dog Walk
Sure, you’ve done lots of foot races around town — and you’ve got the finishers’ medals to prove it. But what about your dog?
He can earn his own gold medal at the 11th Annual Mighty Texas Dog Walk, a 3-mile non-competitive stroll scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, April 11 starting at the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge. There will be six water stops for humans and canines along the way.
But there’s another goal — to win back the Guinness World Record for largest dog walk, currently held by England with 10,272 four-footed friends. We can beat that!
Taking your dog for a walk, by the way, is an easy way to grab some exercise. It gets you (and your pup) outside, burns some calories, stretches those muscles and has an overall pleasant effect on your health.
Just ask Sheri Soltes, founder and president of Texas Hearing & Service Dogs.
“I got started exercising for real at 35 by just walking my dog. It got both of us out of the house and I felt much less stressed after a 30-minute walk looking at the neighbors’ gardens,” Soltes says.
Those quick jaunts progressed to walking — and eventually running — excursions to Lady Bird Lake, Soltes says.
“I hit 50 in May and still wear college size clothes and enjoy excellent health. Plus, my border collie gets her jets burned five times a week and I haven’t strangled anyone in years,” she says.
See what I mean?
Registration is $25 per dog in advance or $30 the day of the event. Sign up online until 5 p.m. Tuesday, April 7, at www.servicedogs.org, or in person from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday or Friday, April 8-10, at Petco, 9828 Great Hills Trail. Packet pickup is April 8-10 at Petco or at the registration tent on walk day.
Proceeds benefit Texas Hearing & Service Dogs, in its 21st year of training adopted shelter dogs as working partners for disabled Texans free of charge.
Does your dog like to exercise with you? Tell me about it!

Cyclists: Enter the Austin Commuter Challenge
Bike commuters, take your mark.
Bicycle Sport Shop is hosting an Austin Commuter Challenge, and you can earn points for how far and how often you ride your bike to work.
The contest will take place in May — Bicycle Month in Austin. Cyclists can pick one of two leagues in which to compete — the Committed Commuters, who will compete May 4-31, or the OK I’ll Try It league, who will compete May 11-17.
Participation is free.
The challenge aims to promote cycling as a green alternative for trips to work, school, the grocery store or anyplace else you’d normally drive. The store’s goal is to reduce the amount of carbon emissions by 97,000 pounds, burn a bunch of calories and save $22,000 in gas money.
“In addition to our environmental goals, we will be encouraging participants to record their routes at MapMyRide.com,” says Chris Carter, marketing manager at the shop. “Map My Ride has agreed to aggregate the recorded data allowing us to gain perspective on our future infrastructure needs.”
Registration for the challenge begins April 2 at www.bicyclesportshop.com or www.austincommuterchallenge.com.
An Awards Ceremony and After Party is scheduled for June 6 at Bicycle Sport Shop, 517 S. Lamar Blvd.
For more information, call Bicycle Sport Shop at 477-3472.

Help me plan my season

I’m trying to figure out what events to sign up for this year. I’m feeling a little overwhelmed! Austin offers so many swimming, running, cycling, adventure racing, triathloning (and more) events that you could do one every weekend and never run out of races.
I mentioned my dilemma on my FaceBook page and immediately people started telling me what events I ought to do. Obviously, I need more input from you!
I’m also doing the Statesman Capitol 10,000, of course. Gotta do that classic Austin race, which is March 29. Go here.
I’ve always done the Cap2K Open Water Swim Race. I love to swim, and I love to swim in rivers and lakes. I especially love to swim from Red Bud Isle to the Rowing Dock. (That’s me swimming the course with race organizers Keith and Sandy Bell, above) Clear, cold water, limestone cliffs, fishies …. sigh. It’s the best. Look for it on May 3. Go here.
Lately, I’ve been doing the Danskin Women’s Triathlon as a relay with two friends. I do the swim, they do the bike and run. Which is great. It takes the pressure off and we always do pretty well. This year, we’ve got two big women’s triathlons — the Trek Women’s Triathlon (go here) on May 17 and the Danskin SheROX Triathlon (go here) on June 7. The photo below is me at the 2008 race.
I’m already planning on doing the Real Ale Ride in Blanco on May 30. I’ve never done it, but it sounds fun … should be a hilly ride, followed by barbecue (or portabello mushroom burgers) and live music. Go here.
I usually do the Pedal Power Wildflower Ride (go here) out at the LBJ Ranch State Park (and love it!), but this year I’ve already committed to doing the Zooma Half Marathon, which is scheduled for the same day, April 4. It’s the first year for the Zooma, another women’s event, and I want to try something different. Go here.
So … what else should I do, gang? What’s on your schedule this season?

It's My Park Day needs you!
You don’t have to go to the gym or run around a track to get a good workout. You can volunteer at a park!
The Austin Parks Foundation is looking for 1,600 people to plant trees, remove non-native plants, clean up trash and do other things to improve Austin’s parks system on It’s My Park Day, March 7.
I try to volunteer every year. I’ve put in shrubs and flowers at the Deep Eddy Bath House, hauled off brush at Pease Park and cleared the bike lane along Great Northern Boulevard in years past. You can choose from 40 projects.
Registration is open at www.austinparks.org.
All volunteers get a T-shirt, snacks and drinks, plus a big helping of gratitude.
Last year, more than 1,550 people worked at 43 park improvement projects, donating more than $60,000 of labor and materials in a single day to the city of Austin parks system.
Lead sponsor is Wheatsville Food Co-op. Other sponsors includeTBG Partners, Jackson Walker LLP, PBS&J, URS, MFI Foundation, Texas Gas Service, Enviromedia Social Marketing, Randall’s, GSD&M Idea City, RGM Advisors, Barnes Gromatzky Kosarek Architects, Grande Communications, Barton Hills Neighborhood Association, Technu Extreme, REI and Hill Country Outdoors.

Is going to work ruining your health?
Is going to the office making you fat? Are long hours keeping you from exercising?
Two Austin fitness professionals are teaming up to present a workshop to stop that from happening.
Certified personal trainer Karen Shopoff Rooff and nutrition counselor Allison Reyna will present a workshop designed to teach participants how to incorporate healthy habits into their work day.
“Fabulously Fit and Deliciously Fed in the Workplace” will include practical advice about integrating fitness into everyday work routines. Participants will learn exercises that can be done at an office desk or in a cubicle. Also on the agenda? Strategies for healthy eating, even when working long hours.
The workshop costs $25 and will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8 at Soma Vida, 1210 Rosewood Ave. To reserve a space, contact Allison@foodaslife.com or 542-3354.
Shopoff Rooff is owner of Balance Personal Fitness Training, and Reyna owns Food as Life.

Master web site for race results
Want to compare race results in a snap? When you type in your name at www.athlinks.com, up pops a list of races that you’ve competed in during the last few years, with your finish information for each one.
It’s not quite a complete list, but when I typed in my name, I found results from the 2000 and 2004 Danskin Women’s Triathlon (this year and last year’s didn’t show up, because I competed as part of a relay team), the Cap 2K Open Water Swim for the past few years, the 2007 and 2008 Statesman Capitol 10,000, and five years of the South Haven (Michigan) Blueberry Festival 5K.
And it’s free!
I think it’s a great way to track your progress. With a quick glance, I could see how my times have improved in the 5K Blueberry run. (This year was my fastest!)
The website pulls results from swimming, running and cycling races, plus triathlons, all over the country.
It also broadcasts your age (I’m 44, by the way) to anyone who cares. And if you’re shy about sharing race results, well, you’re out of luck.
Know of any other cool websites for athletes? Post ‘em here!

Race for the Cure
Brace yourself for the flood of pink!
Packet pickup begins Wednesday for one of the biggest 5K runs in Austin — the 2008 Komen Austin Race for the Cure this Sunday, Nov. 2.
If you haven’t registered for the run yet, you still have time.
Both packet pickup and in-person registration is at 1107 Interstate 35 North, between 11th and 12th Streets on the east side of the highway, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday; and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday.
From 6-8 a.m. Sunday, race day, untimed participants can register at Auditorium Shores, and timed participants at RunTex on Riverside Drive.
In-person registration is $33 for adults and $23 for children. Race day registration is $35 for adults and $25 for children. Online registration is $30 for adults and $20 for children 12 and under. Chip timing costs $3 ($5 on race day).
Online registration is available through 8 p.m. Friday at http://www.komenaustin.org.
Proceeds benefit a great cause. Seventy-five percent of profits raised from registration fees, donations and cash sponsorships stay in the Austin area to go toward education, screening and treatment services for people with breast cancer. The remaining 25 percent funds research grants through Komen National. Part of the registration fee is used to offset the cost of producing the race.
The race starts at 8 a.m. Sunday. Daylight Savings Time ends on race day, so remember to move your clock back an hour before you go to sleep Saturday night.
On race day, parking is available at One Texas Center for $7 a car or for free at the Texas Department of Transportation lots at Riverside Drive and Congress Avenue. Survivor parking is at the Palmer Events Center; parking pass issued with your survivor packet is required.

Huston Street wants you to get a flu shot
Former University of Texas Longhorn baseball player Huston Street, now a relief pitcher for the Oakland A’s, wants you to get a flu shot.
Especially if you have heart disease.
I didn’t know this, but the flu can exacerbate heart disease and lead to viral or bacterial pneumonia. That’s why flu-related death is more common among people who have heart disease. For those folks, a flu shot is as important as controlling cholesterol in preventing heart attacks and strokes, according to the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.
Street cares because one of his Oakland A’s teammates died this past year of heart disease at the age of 28. Street has teamed up with the Mended Hearts’ I Heart Flu Shots campaign to remind people to get a flu shot. He brings that campaign to Austin today for the American Heart Association’s Heart Walk, which starts at 8 a.m. in front of the Capitol.
“I have seen the devastating effects of heart disease, and know how important it is to protect against its complications,” Street said in a press release. “Since the flu can be so dangerous for heart patients, it is important to make people with heart disease aware of the importance of an annual flu vaccination.”
The flu affects up to 20 percent of Americans every year, causing an average of 36,000 deaths, mostly in people age 65 or older.
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in Texas, but just one in three adults with heart disease received the flu vaccine in 2005. Getting a flu shot is one small thing people can do to protect themselves.
Austin’s Health Department will offer flu shots to uninsured or underinsured Austin/Travis County residents who are at a high risk of complications. Several clinics in the area will provide the flu shots through November. For more details including dates and locations, go to www.ci.austin.tx.us/health.
Mended Hearts is a national patient support group affiliated with the American Heart Association. For more information about its campaign, go to www.iheartflushots.com.

Blow off steam at these fitness events
Wow. We’ve got some seriously ornery readers out there!
Perhaps a little physical exertion is in order. Take note of the following upcoming events:
The Austin Oyster Urban Adventure Race is coming up Oct. 12. It’s billed as a top-secret race — nobody knows exactly what the course is until the start of the race. Teams of three or six run-bike-scoot-skate-trek-climb-paddle (and other crazy stuff) their way around the city. The race was held in Austin for the first time last year, and nearly 40 teams signed up.
Registration is $99 for a team of three or $150 for a team. Each team must collect $300 in pledges. Proceeds benefit the Austin Parks Foundation. For more information, go to www.oysterracingseries.com/Austin-Home/home.aspx.
If you need some tips on how to tackle the Oyster, attend an information seminar from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 10, at RunTex, 422 W. Riverside Dr.
Rogue Running is hosting a couple of fun free runs this month.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, anyone can join in a Taco Run. Coaches will lead runners on 7 or 10-mile runs at 7 a.m.; or 3 and 5 mile runs starting at 7:30 a.m. Afterward, Tacodeli will provide free breakfast tacos.
On Sunday, Sept. 28, it’s the same routine, only instead of tacos, participants get free popsicles.
Meet at Rogue Equipment, 500 San Marcos St. For more information call 493-0921 or email Leilani Perry at leilani@roguerunning.com.
Need some place to stash your keys and ID while you run? Austin entrepreneur and athlete Kim Overton showed off her product, the SPIbelt, on NBC’s Today Show last week.
It’s a small belt with a zippered pocket. It doesn’t bounce while you run.
