This time of the year, all kinds of diet books pile up in my mailbox and form huge, out-of-control drifts of stuff on my desktop.
I can’t see over the top of the stack! Time for you to help me out.
If you want any of the following books, please post below, letting me know which one you want and why you deserve it. I’ll pick winners in a week or so.
If your New Year’s resolution involves weight loss, one of these books might come in handy.

Author of Fit By Nature at REI on Wednesday

Tired of lurking among the treadmills and weight machines at the neighborhood gym?
John Colver can relate.
Colver, a former bike racer, paratrooper and mountain guide, thinks you can get a better workout outdoors, where the scenery’s pretty, the air’s fresher and you don’t have to listen to those annoying gym rats grunt as they hoist weights.
“Why would I go inside to exercise?” says Colver, 46, founder of the Seattle-based training company AdventX, which trains people for adventure and high-level performance by training outside. “I’ve never been predisposed to going to the gym.”
Colver has written a book, “Fit By Nature,” which walks readers through a 12-week exercise program packed with stuff like trotting down fallen logs, leaping over rocks and scampering along wooded trails. He’ll speak during a free presentation from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Wednesday at REI Austin Gateway, 9901 N Capitol of Texas Highway.
The book sells for $24.95 and is available locally at REI.

Free fitness books

I’ve got a pair of cool fitness books to pass along.
“Running the Rift” (Algonquin Books, $24.95), a novel by Naomi Benaron, follows the story of a young African runner who dreams of racing in the Olympics. He trains in Rwanda, but gets caught up in the rising tensions of the Hutu-Tutsi conflict.
Remind you of anyone? Austin’s own Gilbert Tuhabonye, head of the Gilbert’s Gazelles running program, survived genocide in Burundi and went on to become a top runner at Abilene Christian University.
“Hell on Two Wheels,” by Amy Snyder, tells the story of athletes who cycle 3,000 miles across the country in the grueling Race Across America.

Several Austin cyclists have competed in the event over the years, and this year four Austin women finished the race as a relay.
If you want either book, post here, telling me why you deserve it. Best answers win.
I’ll announce winners next week.

Win "List Maker's Get-Healthy Guide"

I love the book that appeared in my mailbox this week — “List Maker’s Get-Healthy Guide” from the editors of Prevention magazine.
I keep flipping through it, checking interesting lists, like “12 foods not worth buying organic,” “6 strategies to beat workout boredom,” “7 ways to shorten your lifespan,” “7 germiest public places” and “7 best excuses for calling in sick.”
It’s addictive!
But, since I don’t have room for any more clutter on my desk, I’m giving the book away to the person who needs it most.

Free fitness books (with racy titles!)

Running Press sent over a two-book gift set of Rory Freedman and Kim Barnouin’s hilarious smack-talking odes to healthy living, “Skinny Bitch, A No-Nonsense, Tough-Love Guide for Savvy Girls Who Want to Stop Eating Crap and Start Looking Fabulous” and “Skinny Bastard, A Kick-in-the-Ass for Real Men Who Want to Stop Being Fat and Start Getting Buff.”
Yes, the books are spiced up with a smattering of four-letter words. They are brazen, sassy and straight-up. It’s like getting a talking-to from your best friend.
One reviewer says by the time she laughed her way through Chapter 4 of “Skinny Bitch,” “The Dead, Rotting Decomposing Flesh Diet,” she called home to change dinner plans because she’d gone vegan on the spot.
Take what you will from it, but it’s a refreshing look at what we eat and what it does to our bodies. And it’s hilarious!
You’ll learn why sugar is the devil, what’s really in meat and seafood, and the importance of questioning what you put in your body.
As the authors say, “Use your head, lose your ass.”
The set sells for $29.95. Tell me why you need this pair of books. Best answer (come on folks, get creative!) wins the boxed set.

Win "The 10-Minute Total Body Breakthrough"

Think you don’t have time for fitness? Wrong.
Sean Foy outlines in simple terms just how to go from excuses to hill repeats (or something like that) in “The 10-Minute Total Body Breakthrough.”
The spiral-bound book is geared toward fitness newbies, with explanations of Body Mass Index, fitness tests that let you compare your fitness level to others, places to record your blood pressure and cholesterol levels, stories about real people who have whipped themselves into shape and lots of illustrated, easy-to-follow instructions on how to do basic exercises.
My favorite feature? The “create your own workout” section in the back. You put together your own 10-minute sweat fest by picking one each from the selection of 4-minute, 3-minute, 2-minute and 1-minute suggested exercises. You might end up with, say, 4 minutes of mountain climbers, followed by 3 minutes of chair push-ups, 2 minutes of crunches and 1 minute of seated side bends.
Do you need this book? Tell me why. Best answer gets my copy.

Thinking of riding the Ride for the Roses this fall? Dreaming of a cycling tour through Italy? (I am!)

Just post at the end of this blog why you deserve the book. Then email your snail mail address to pleblanc@statesman.com. The person with the best answer wins the book.
The over-sized paperback is packed with training plans for people planning to ride centuries, multi-day tours or mountain bike races.
Bernhardt, who coached the USA Triathlon team at the 2004 Olympics and served as chair of the USA Triathlon National Coaching Committee for five years, puts training in plain English. The book includes sections on nutrition, bike fit, gear and training intensity. The bulk of the book is devoted to workout descriptions.
