Your weekend fitness events!

Once again, Austin’s got lots on the fitness calendar in the next few weeks.

This week, guest blogger Colin Moss helped me pick out the best of the best.

Moss, who writes a blog at http://colintri.blogspot.com/, dragged me through a 7-mile run around Lady Bird Lake last weekend. We both got dragged by his dog Oskar, who only leads and never follows.

Here you are:

  • Reliant Energy Torch Relay — The Reliant Energy Torch Relay makes its way to Austin Saturday at the RunTex on Riverside. Relay festivities will start at 10 a.m. and go until about noon and will support the athletes of the National Senior Games being held in Houston June 16-30. Of the 10,000 participants, about 1,200 are from Texas, and several dozen are taking part in the Torch Relay from the Stevie Ray Vaughan statue on Lady Bird Lake to the RunTex on Riverside Drive. Come out and support the members of your athlete community and hear guest speakers Paul Carroza of RunTex, Lou Earle from the Mayor’s Fitness Council and publisher of Austin Fit, and Holly Riley from Texercise Austin.
  • Texas Water Safari — Kayakers and canoers launch their multi-day quest to paddle 260 miles from San Marcos to the Texas Coast in the Texas Water Safari at 9 a.m. Saturday at Aquarena Springs in San Marcos. They’ll have 100 hours to reach Bayfront Park in Seadrift to call themselves official finishers. Water flows are down this year, so expect challenging conditions. For more information go here.
  • Fox Fit Weekend — This weekend Fox 7 news and Maggie’s Hope team up to present Fox Fit Weekend at Rough Hollow on Lake Travis. It’s a two-day event that includes a lakeside gala ($125 for individuals) on Friday and a 2-mile walk ($12), 10K run ($30) or a 6-,12- or 18-mile bike ride ($20 suggested donation) on Saturday. The event benefits Maggie’s Hope, an organization dedicated to helping families with children diagnosed with autism. The Lake Travis Power Boat Association will host a chairty poker run ($100). You will boat from marina to marina, picking up poker cards to play your hand for a shot at great prizes. For more information go here.
  • Ironkids Round Rock — Interest in trying a triathlon? Ironkids is hosting one ($50) for kids ages 6 to 15 of all experience levels at Old Settlers Park. The race, which combines swimming, cycling and running, starts at 7 a.m. Sunday. The race is divided into three divisions — a 50-yard swim, 2-mile bike and 500-yard run for 6-8 year olds; a 150-yard swim, 4-mile bike and 1-mile run for 9-11 year olds; and a 300-yard swim, 8-mile bike and 2-mile run for 12-15 year olds. In addition to medals and trophies, the top five male and female finishers in each age group will qualify for the Hy-Vee Ironkids U.S. championship. An interactive weekend expo from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 8-11 a.m. Sunday is part of the lineup. For more information and registration go here.
  • Shammies ‘N Koozies — Pedal 25, 50 or 60 miles around Wimberley to New Braunfels, eat some barbecue, then jump on a tube and float the Guadalupe River during the Second Annual Shammies ‘N Koozies Ride ‘N Float, presented by Austin-based Cadence Sport Inc. on Saturday. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Friends of the Blue Hole in Wimberley. Shuttle service, bag check and bike transport are provided. Day of registration prices are $75 for the ride only or $95 for the ride and float. Packet pick up is at Bicycle Sport Shop on South Lamar Boulevard from noon to 6 p.m. Friday. For more information go here.
  • Crusader Course — Proceeds from this 5K mud run and obstacle course on Saturday at Rusty’s Walnut Creek Ranch in Cedar Creek will benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Central and South Texas. For more information, go here.
  • Maudie’s Moonlight Margarita Run & Gala — Run 5K along streets bordering Lady Bird Lake, then eat Mexican food and swill margaritas — all in the name of supporting The Trail Foundation, a non-profit organization that maintains the trail around Lady Bird Lake. Proceeds help fund projects including the renovation of the Johnson Creek Trailhead and the planned boardwalk on the south side of the lake at Interstate 35. The race starts at 8 p.m. Thursday, June 16. Runners start under the north side of the MoPac bridge and finish in front of the American Legion Hall on Veterans Drive. Immediately following the race, Maudie’s Tex-Mex will host a post-race party underneath the live oaks of the American Legion Hall grounds. Tickets are $30 for the 5K only or $95 for both the 5K and party. Prices increase June 15. For more information go here.
