Ages 18 and up welcome; capped at the first 60 people to sign in. Free Community workouts are scheduled every four weeks; the next one is June 25. For more information go here.
CapTexTri — The Capital of Texas Triathlon gets under way Monday, May 30 at Auditorium Shores. Yogathon — Empower Yoga, 1611 W 5th Street, No. 140, has paired with Room to Read Austin to raise money to encourage primary school children to read. During June, any Empower Yoga student who raises $250 for one girl’s scholarship gets more than 50 percent off a month pass at the studio. Empower Yoga will host a kick-off party with a free yoga class taught by Ashley Hartley at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 1. For more information go here or call 512-472-8884.
Garage Gym Throwdown — Put your fitness skills to the test in the no frills, all out, gritty battle of fitness known as the Garage Gym Throwdown. Fifty teams of two will compete to determine who is the toughest garage gym warrior in town. The event takes place at the LCRA parking garage off of Lake Austin Boulevard starting at 8 a.m. Saturday, June 4. The workout will mix CrossFit and boot camp movements using medballs, kettlebells, tires and a wheelbarrow. Male, female and co-ed winners will be crowned. Entry fee is $100 per team. To register go here or call (512) 799-5699.
Navy SEAL Memorial Challenge — Crossfit Austin and about a dozen other Crossfit gyms across the country will host a competitive workout in honor of the Navy SEALS. The event is open to the public; all that’s required to participate is a donation to the Navy Seal Foundation. Individuals or teams will complete a workout called “Murph” in honor of Lieutenant Michael Murphy of Patchogue, N.Y., who was killed in Afghanistan in 2005. Heats will run all day, starting at 7 a.m. at 8708 South Congress, Suite A180. For more information go here.
Great Castell Kayak Race — Paddlers will race 12 miles down the Llano River, from the Highway 87 bridge to Castell, in this fund-raiser benefitting the Chemo Sabe Foundation, a support group for people undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer. Race begins at 9 a.m. Saturday, June 4. Participants can race in competitive or recreational categories. Entry fee includes free camping for one night, a T-shirt, bandana map, drinks, snacks and goodie bag. A finish line festival will take place under the oak trees at RiverSounds in Castell. Registration is $50 per person ($60 on race day). For more information or to register, go here or call 512-217-4596.
Texas Geocache Challenge — Eighty-nine Texas state parks, including Batrop and Enchanted Rock, will host a statewide Texas Geocache Challenge on Saturday, June 4. Each park will have a special hidden “cache” that will test participants’ scavenger-hunting skills. Participants should download a Texas Geocache Passport and coordinates of the caches from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Web site at http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/geocaching/. Geocaching combines treasure hunting with outdoor recreation and hiking. Geocachers use a handheld global positioning system, or GPS, and provided coordinates to find hidden boxes, which in this case contain collectible wildlife-themed trading cards, park information, a logbook and a paper hole punch. Competitors who locate all caches in a particular region can mail their completed passport to Texas Parks and Wildlife Department in Austin for rewards. For more information, and a complete list of participating parks, go here.
PFIVE55 Series — The PFIVE55 series features a 500-meter lake swim and 5K run at 6:30 p.m. at Lake Pflugerville on the 5th of every month, through October. Cost is $25 per event. Giveaways at every race include wetsuits, running shoes, and other great merchandise. Free swim and run workouts are provided by EMERGE Multisport for all registered participants throughout the series.
