Banff Film Festival at Paramount April 2-3

191.jpg

Mainstream film festivals attract celebrities in long gowns and jewels. The Banff Mountain Film Festival draws folks decked out in zip-off pants and hiking boots.

That’s a good thing.

I make it a point to attend the festival every year. Not only do I get to see some of the coolest films (think biking across Mongolia, kayaking in Africa, climbing in Yosemite), I get to mingle with Austin’s outdoorsy set. Usually I get a free pair of socks, too, given away at one of a dozen or so tables set up by businesses that cater to nature lovers and active types.

We’re lucky we get to see the festival in Austin.

It features award-winning selections picked from the roughly 260 films entered into an annual film festival in Banff, Canada. All of them have something to do with the mountains, whether it be paddling through them, climbing them, biking up and down them or creatures that live in them.

The film festival stops in about 350 cities around the globe.

This year’s tour comes to the Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress Ave., this Saturday and Sunday. It features two collections of action, environmental and adventure mountain films — Radical Reels at 8 p.m. Saturday and the 2011 World Tour (my fave!) at 6 p.m. Sunday.

Tickets are $18 per night and available at Whole Earth stores, the Paramount box office, www.austintheatre.org or by calling 474-1221. For more information go here.
