home_intro.jpg

It’s spring, and that means there are so many fitness events on the calendar that I can’t blog about all of them. Here’s a sampling of some of the best:

  • Free triathlon training clinics — Is that a triathlete you see in the mirror? Learn about what it’s like to train for a triathlon and what you’ll need to do to get started at a happy hour session hosted by Tri Zones featuring free beer and wine and a training clinic starting at 6 p.m. Monday, March 21 at Luke’s Locker, 115 Sandra Muraida Way. For more information call the store at 482-8676. Another training clinic is planned for 7 p.m. Monday, April 4, at REI Gateway, 9901 North Capitol of Texas Highway. For more information call the store at 343-5550.
  • Bra fitting — Bra-fit expert June Fox from Moving Comfort will help fit women for bras from 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 22 at Title Nine Austin, 500 N. Lamar Blvd. RSVP at 322-9902. Nibbles provided. For more information go here.
  • Running documentary — The documentary “My Run,” which debuted in Austin last year, will be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 31 at select area theaters. The documentary, narrated by Billy Bob Thornton, is the inspirational story of Terry Hitchcock, a 57-year-old widower and father who ran 2,000 miles from his home in St. Paul, Minn., to the opening ceremony of the summer Olympics in Atlanta, Ga. A pre-recorded question and answer session will follow. Participating theaters include Southpark Meadows, 9900 S. Interstate 35; Regal Arbor Cinema, 9828 Great Hills Trail; Regal Metropolitan 14, 901 Little Texas Lane; Cinemark Cedar Park, 1335 E. Whitestone Blvd.; Tinseltown USA, 15436 FM 1825 in Pflugerville; and Cinemark Hill Country Galleria, 12800 W. Highway 71 in Bee Cave. Tickets are $12.50 here. A portion of proceeds will benefit the LiveStrong Foundation.
  • Springboard diving classes — West Austin Athletic Club dive coach Kathy Fox will host open dive classes for prospective athletes from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, March 22 and 24 at WAAC, 1024 Patterson Road. Divers should wear a swimsuit and bring a towel. For more information contact Becky Shepard at 263-4282 or becky@wfly.com.
  • Spartan Race — The Spartan Race, a 3-mile obstacle race with hurdles, a mud crawl, fire jump, Gladiator pit, water cannon and spear throw, will take place March 26 at Rocky Hill Ranch, 578 FM 153 in Smithville. Registration is $60 for individuals, $220 for teams of four or $500 for teams of 10 here.

  • Shape Diva Dash — This 3-mile women’s only adventure obstacle run is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 9 at Walter E. Long Park. Organizers say it’s a test of overall strength, agility, balance and stamina. Obstacle courses are thrown in for fun every half mile. Registration is $40 through March 27 (when it goes up to $45) here.
  • Round Rock Express Ride — Jack & Adam’s Bicycles and High Five Events will present the inaugural Round Rock Express Ride on April 10. Bicyclists can choose from a 27 or 77-mile course through the rolling countryside around the Dell Diamond. Registration ranges from $37 to $55, depending on when you register and if you want to attend the Round Rock Express baseball game. A portion of proceeds will benefit Please Be Kind to Cyclists, which works to increase harmony between motorists and bicyclists on Central Texas roadways. For more information go here.
