Volunteers needed for cancer prevention study

The American Cancer Society needs volunteers — especially physically active ones — to participate in a new cancer prevention study.

Enrollment will take place March 1-5 at the American Cancer Society Corporate Office, 2433 Ridgepoint Drive, Suite A, and the American Cancer Society National Cancer Information Center, 11701 Stonehollow Drive.

Nationally, the American Cancer Society wants to enroll 500,000 participants in the Cancer Prevention Study 3, which is designed to help researchers better understand the factors that cause or prevent cancer. In Austin, 1,000 participants are needed.

Participants must be adults ages 30 to 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer and are willing to participate in a long-term study.

They’ll have to provide a small blood sample and measurements and complete a detailed health/family history survey. Surveys are sent to participants every 2 to 3 years to update their health status and activities.

The study will be the third long term study the agency has conducted since the 1950s. Earlier studies helped link smoking and second hand smoke directly to cancer deaths. Nutrition and exercise have also been studied, but not to the extent that this study will.
