Volunteers needed for National Public Lands Day on Saturday
Trail users, your muscles are needed!
The Austin Parks Foundation, Hill Country Conservancy and REI are trying to round up a record number of volunteers to work on trails that crisscross the Barton Creek Greenbelt this Saturday, National Public Lands Day.
If you go, you get free breakfast tacos, coffee and juice in the morning, plus a cool free T-shirt and a picnic lunch when the work is done.
Volunteer registration begins at 8:15 a.m. at the Barton Creek Greenbelt Trailhead in Zilker Park.
At 9 a.m., U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett (D-Austin) will announce more federal funding for the “Walk For a Day” trail, which will run 34 miles from Zilker Park to city-owned lands west of Kyle. It’s the second round of funding for the ambitious project, which last year received $300,000 in federal money.
Trail work begins at 9:30 a.m. With the recent storms, volunteers will have plenty of work to do. Besides invasive species removal, they’ll be doing trail maintenance and cleaning up debris.
A volunteer appreciation picnic starts at 12:30 p.m. at the Rock Garden, just up the hill from the Zilker Hillside Theater.
“We have 269 people signed up, but I could use about 118 more helping us battle invasive species along the Barton Creek Greenbelt, starting at the Zilker access,” says Charlie McCabe, executive director of the Austin Parks Foundation.
If you plan to volunteer, wear long pants and closed toe shoes. Bring a water bottle and hat.
